The Vanden and Will C. Wood high school girls soccer teams ended in a 0-0 draw in Monticello Empire League play on Thursday night.
The Vikings are now 4-3-1 overall, 2-1-1 in the MEL. The Wildcats are 4-3-2 overall, 2-1-1 in league play.
In the closing seconds of the game, Vanden goalkeeper junior Tylin Norman had a save on a Wildcat corner kick in extra time to thwart Wood’s late attempt.
“She (Norman) goes 100 no matter what, and I don’t think she could give anything less,” Vanden head coach Anna Chavez. “I think her drive to hate losing really pushes her and it keeps her focus.”
The Wildcats are returning back to their home field next Tuesday, as they host Vacaville.
The Vikings will be traveling next Tuesday when they take on the Rodriguez Mustangs on the road.
Vacaville 12, Armijo 0
The Vacaville High girls soccer team (10-6, 3-1) returned from the road with a victory over the Armijo Royals with a 12-0 win.
Nine Bulldogs found the back of the net during the duration of the match.
Senior Kamryn Bubak, Sydney Boele and sophomore Grace Kramer all scored two. Senior Sana Purcell, juniors Gracie Holbein and Allison Cline and sophomore Natalia Rodriguez all scored a goal.
Due to the junior varsity game being canceled, two members of the Bulldogs JV team moved up and played in the game, finding a goal a piece between them. Freshmen Brooke Taylor and Alyssa Eddie both scored, and Vacaville head coach Jenn Eggley was proud of them for stepping up to the task, being a part of the offensive momentum.
Girls basketball
Vanden 97, Armijo 9
The Vanden Vikings girls basketball team (10-2, 2-0) returned from the road victorious when they defeated the Armijo Royals, 97-9.
Junior Alyssa Jackson had 16 points and seven steals. Sophomore Taytum Johnson had 16 points with three steals. Senior Jiana Creswell had 13 points with five assists. Sophomore Jaylen Kuehnel scored 11 points, and Senior Kiara Roberts scored 12.
Though content with the victory, Vanden co-head coach Jake Johnson III saw a bit of mental fatigue from jump ball after the girls had been taking their finals in the classroom.
“They were resilient, so they just picked it up,” Johnson III said. “Then they put the game away pretty fast. We play 94 feet so that helps out a lot, speeds us up and speeds the other team up, so it’s easy for us to get our rhythm.”
Vacaville 58, Fairfield 48
The Vacaville girls basketball team (6-7, 1-1) won their first Monticello Empire League game when they defeated the Fairfield Falcons, 58-48.
Leading the Bulldogs in scoring was junior Brynlie Headrick with 27 points and 11 rebounds. Allyssa Shafer scored eleven, Lilly Holman grabbed 13 rebounds, and Nicole Taylor stole the ball four times.
Vacaville head coach Kate Shipp-Roberts was proud of her girls for playing strong throughout the game.
“Players stepped up when needed to, this was a must-win game for our team and the program,” Shipp-Roberts said. “The girls answered the call.”
Wood, Rodriguez game postponed
Originally set to play on Thursday night, the Will C. Wood Wildcats girls basketball game against the Rodriguez Mustangs has been postponed, the Wildcats’ Twitter page announced.
The game has been moved to Sunday, Jan. 23, still at Rodriguez. The junior varsity game is scheduled for noon, and the varsity game is scheduled to be played at 1:30 p.m.
Faith Christian 69, Buckingham 19
The Buckingham Charter Knights girls basketball team lost to Faith Christian, 69-19, on Tuesday.
The Knights look to bounce back when they head over to Roseville to take on the Valley Christian Lions next Thursday.
