SF Giants place Johnny Cueto and Alex Wood on COVID IL - Around the Foghorn

The SF Giants received some bad news before the start of their series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday. Starting pitchers Johnny Cueto and Alex Wood were both placed on the COVID-19 injured list. In a press conference with reporters, manager Gabe Kapler revealed that Wood has tested positive for COVID-19 and is dealing with several symptoms. On the other hand, Cueto tested negative on Monday but was exhibiting some symptoms and is being isolated from the team for precautionary reasons.

Wood and Cueto are not the first Giants to be placed on the COVID IL recently. The Giants placed infielder Donovan Solano on the COVID IL week when he tested positive. Solano has been recovering in isolation in a New York hotel since his positive test.

SF Giants pitchers Alex Wood and Johnny Cueto were placed on the COVID-19 IL.

While the impact on the Giants immediate prospects is far less important than the health of members of the organization, Cueto and Wood’s absence forced the Giants to utilize a bullpen game on Monday. If Cueto no longer exhibits symptoms and tests negative again tomorrow, he could make his scheduled start. However, if not, the Giants will likely turn to recently acquired lefty José Quintana.

The Giants are one of the most vaccinated teams in MLB, eclipsing the 85% vaccine threshold in May, limiting the restrictions on the rest of the team and those who have had close contact with Wood. However, while the Giants organization should be less impacted by a single positive COVID-19 case because of their high vaccination rate, that doesn’t mean they have nothing to worry about. Vaccines are undeniably effective at preventing the spread and severity of COVID-19 cases, but our understanding of breakthrough cases remains relatively limited. Last week, the CDC director acknowledged that vaccinated people can still spread the virus.

The SF Giants are already without three members of their active roster after Donovan Solano and Alex Wood tested positive for COVID-19 and Johnny Cueto exhibited symptoms of the virus. Hopefully, both can recover quickly and not spread the virus to others.

Reporting on faith-based investment guru Cathie Wood? Do your homework (better) - GetReligion

sedar.indah.link

Investments aren’t my specialty at all, but I was lured to a New York Times business story recently that was headlined: “God, Money, YOLO: How Cathie Wood Found Her Flock.” (YOLO means “you only live once.”)

Hmm, I thought, an article about Christian investing? After all, this woman manages some $85 billion in assets. A superstar in the world of investing, she is known for her risky moves and appeal to the Reddit/Millennial crowd.

So, after 20 paragraphs describing the CEO of Ark Invest, we finally got to the God part.

It happened in the 21st paragraph, just after a mention about Wood speaking to business and religious groups about her late-career decision to start her own investment shop.

It began, she says, with a head-on encounter with the Holy Spirit.

On a gorgeous day in August 2012, Ms. Wood — a fund manager struggling through a rough quarter at AllianceBernstein — was struck by the silence inside her stately home in Wilton, Conn.

Her three children were gone, off to camp and other activities for the summer. She was facing two full weeks alone in the nearly 6,000-square-foot house she bought with her ex-husband in the 1990s.

Then she felt it.

“Wham,” Ms. Wood said last year on the “Jesus Calling” podcast, which is centered on the devotional writings of the best-selling Christian author Sarah Young. “I really feel like that was the Holy Spirit just saying to me, ‘OK, this is the plan.’”

“Jesus Calling,” for those of you who’ve lived on Pluto for the past few decades and have never heard of it, is one of the most successful devotional aids of all time. Thirty million units of this book -– and associated products –- have sold since 2004, when the one-time reclusive missionary to Australia (now living near Nashville) first published a devotional with words allegedly from Jesus himself.

Its fans claim that its words are what Jesus would sound like today if living in the 21st century. Its detractors call it theologically shallow and New Agey. In 2014, religion writer Ruth Graham, now with the New York Times, but then writing for the Daily Beast, called it “the evangelical bestseller you’ve never heard of.”

The plan was for Ms. Wood to use her experience as a tech investor to build a new kind of money management firm — optimized for the social media age and embracing a level of transparency that was radical, at least on Wall Street.

To do it, Ms. Wood had to quit her job and put her personal wealth on the line at the age of 57.

“Most of my friends told me I was nuts, and yet I wasn’t listening to them. I knew that I needed to follow God’s will for me,” she told a Christian ministry organization in 2016. “That was the only way I was going to be happy.”

This curious article mentions that she was brought up Catholic and attended Catholic schools. Which brings up some questions. Is she still attending the Catholic Church even though divorced? Or has she segued into evangelical Protestantism?

Well, now. I realize the writer specializes in financial markets, not faith, but that’s some rather basic information missing, considering that the headline pushed the faith angle.

Readers picked up on the lack of direction in the piece. “The author teased us with the God part, then wilted away from it,” said one.

“It really needed an interview with her since I was more intrigued about her religious experience than her investments,” one wrote, “however, it’s clear they couldn’t get it.”

Yes, we all were intrigued about the religion angle. And it was there in this interview, which the article briefly alluded to. We find out she’s a member of Walnut Hill Community Church, a non-denominational congregation with branches in four Connecticut suburbs. The church has about 2,000 members.

We also learn that she named her investment company after the Ark of the Covenant, a major part item in Jewish history. That factoid would have been a nice addition somewhere.

True, religious information on Wood is scanty. This South China Morning Post piece on her — printed several months after Wood’s Aug. 12, 2020, podcast — didn't have much else new, either. This Financial Times piece likewise had little to add on the religion end (Wood refusing to give media interviews doesn’t help) but what surprises me is that no one called over to her church to get a quote from one of the pastors. Who knows; someone might have talked.

Or how about Jericho Partnership, a Danbury, Conn., organization that she spoke in front of in 2016 about “faith in the marketplace.” She dropped several names in this speech; names that a reporter could have followed up on with a phone call.

I realize that many reporters on other newsroom beats have zero experience when it comes to researching a religion story. (I’m the person who, in my first job at a suburban Portland, Ore., daily, was able to do a definitive interview with a local judge — Jewish or Episcopalian, I forget which — because I wandered into his house of worship, found a members’ directory laying around and called him at his unlisted number. Churches and synagogues don’t publicize adherents’ numbers these days, but back in the more innocent late ‘70s, they did. But only someone who attended a church or synagogue would have known how to find such information.)

There are all sorts of ways to add substance to an article with bits of information. What about the Catholic parish in which Wood grew up? Would anyone there remember her? Did anyone talk with her family? Kids? Ex-husband?

This business story, which was largely based on a year-old podcast, could have done a lot better had the reporter known how to nose about the world of religion.

As it was, so much was left out that, with a little detective work, could have been added in. The article required some additional, and very basic, research.

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants will have to battle two of the best teams in baseball this week, the Brewers and the Dodgers.

They’re also battling COVID-19.

The Giants placed their probable starting pitchers for Monday’s and Tuesday’s games against the Brewers at Oracle Park — Johnny Cueto and Alex Wood — on the injured list Monday afternoon.

Giants manager Gabe Kapler said that Wood had tested positive for COVID and was symptomatic.

“He’s really broken really upset and I think he’s having an awesome season and very disappointed and that season is gonna be interrupted for a bit,” Kapler said.

Cueto, Monday’s probable starter, had not tested positive for COVID, but Kapler said he had flu-like symptoms, resulting in his scratch from the lineup. Reliever José Álvarez will start Monday’s game, with multiple bullpen arms expected to follow him.

Kapler declined to disclose either pitcher’s vaccination status.

San Francisco lost infielder Donovan Solano to the COVID list last week.

“We’re a very vaccinated group,” Kapler said. “After Donovan’s positive test, we’ve all ramped up the sensitivity level. Last night on the plane and the bus, there were a lot of masks on… It’s really important to take every possible precautionary measure.”

“We’re far from perfect and everybody makes mistakes, but I think we’re pretty diligent.”

The threat of COVID seems was made even more apparent by Solano’s positive test.

“Donnie was probably as masked up over the last couple of years as any other player that we have… And he got COVID,” Kapler said. “There are no guarantees, but we’re going to do everything we can.”

Kapler said he is optimistic that the Giants players won’t struggle amid Monday’s news.

“This group of players — particularly the core group of players — is very even… [they] never too high or too low. So you introduce a challenge to people with personalities like that, they’re generally not gonna get bent out of shape and especially, anxious, upset.”

The Giants called up reliever John Brebbia and infielder Jason Vosler from Triple-A to take the place of Wood and Cueto on the roster.

Kapler said if Cueto feels better, he could start Tuesday’s game, which would allow the Giants’ rotation to stay in order for Wednesday and beyond.

The Giants did claim former All-Star lefty starter José Quintana off waivers from the Angels Monday. Kapler said he could be a factor for the team this week.

Evan Rachel Wood gives Marilyn Manson the middle finger after 'Donda' controversy - USA TODAY

Evan Rachel Wood gives Marilyn Manson the finger after Kanye West event - Page Six

sedar.indah.link

Evan Rachel Wood blasted her allegedly abusive ex Marilyn Manson after he appeared onstage at Kanye West’s “Donda” event last week.

The “Westworld” star, 33, subtly called out Manson, 52, while performing a cover of New Radicals’ 1998 single “You Get What You Give” with her musical partner Zane Carney on Saturday at the Bourbon Room in Hollywood.

“I’ve been saving this, but it seems like the appropriate time,” she prefaced the song, which includes a reference to the embattled performer.

When Wood reached the part of the track that mentioned Manson’s name, she put up her middle finger as the crowd erupted in cheers.

She shared a clip of her performance on Instagram and addressed the shock rocker’s other alleged victims.

“‘You get what you give,'” she wrote. “For my fellow survivors who got slapped in the face this week. I love you. Don’t give up.”

The “Thirteen” star named Manson as her alleged abuser in February after claiming for years that she had been abused by an unnamed ex.

“He started grooming me when I was a teenager and horrifically abused me for years,” she claimed to Vanity Fair. “I was brainwashed and manipulated into submission. I am done living in fear of retaliation, slander, or blackmail.”

Wood is one of 15 women who have come forward to accuse the “Killing Strangers” singer of sexual assault or abuse. Manson has vehemently denied all the allegations, calling them “horrible distortions of reality.”

“My intimate relationships have always been entirely consensual with like-minded partners. Regardless of how — and why — others are now choosing to misrepresent the past, that is the truth,” he wrote on Instagram in February.

West, 44, recently came under fire for inviting Manson and rapper DaBaby — who made homophobic remarks during a festival performance in July — to appear alongside him at the final listening party for his new album, “Donda.”

The “Gold Digger” singer caused even more of an uproar Sunday when “Donda” finally hit streaming services and included a collaboration with both Manson and DaBaby, 29, titled “Jail Pt. 2.”

Ikea pilots U.S. furniture buyback and resale program as it eyes a nationwide launch - CNBC

Ikea is piloting a furniture buyback and resale program in the United States as it aims to make the service a permanent fixture at its stores nationwide.

The pilot program will be available at its store in the Philadelphia suburb of Conshohocken from Monday through Sept. 19. It will eventually roll out to additional markets.

Ikea has launched repurchase programs in other countries, including the United Kingdom as it works toward making its business more sustainable and "climate positive" by 2030.

Loyalty customers will be able to sell their gently used Ikea furniture in exchange for store credit. The items will then be available for resale in the retailer's "as-is" section at discounted prices. Any customer can join the loyalty program for free.

Fully-assembled furniture will be assessed based on its condition, age and functionality, but some categories of products like dressers will not be eligible for the program.

"We are passionate about making sustainable living easy and affordable for the many, and want to be part of a future that's better for both people and the planet," said Ikea sustainability manager Jennifer Keesson.

More retailers are responding to customer demand for more sustainable products, which are more popular with younger generations. In recent months, Gap, Macy's, J.C. Penney and J.Crew's Madewell brand have partnered with resale platform ThredUp to test the secondhand market.

Piper Sandler's spring 2021 Gen Z survey found that 47% of teens have purchased secondhand goods and 55% have sold secondhand. The survey also showed that teens allocate 8% of their shopping time to secondhand purchases. The semiannual survey gathered results from more than 7,000 teenagers with an average age of 16.1.

While much of the demand has been for secondhand clothing, Ikea hopes this behavior can transfer into furniture.

New Jersey Devils: Miles Wood Could Really Go Anywhere In Lineup - Pucks and Pitchforks

sedar.indah.link

This title might scare some people, but wait just a minute before reacting. The New Jersey Devils shouldn’t put Miles Wood in the top six. They could, but it’s not the best decision for the team. It would be much better to try someone like Alexander Holtz or Nolan Foote next to Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier over Miles Wood. We already know what Wood can do on the top line. He’s been there at the end of the season for the past two seasons.

For the majority of last season, head coach Lindy Ruff found magic with Wood, Michael McLeod, and Nathan Bastian. They all helped each other get the best professional season out of each other.

Bastian was taken in the Seattle Kraken Expansion Draft, so that line is no more. Ruff and the rest of the Devils’ coaching staff will have a decision to make whether they go into next season keeping McLeod and Wood together, or if they are starting from scratch.

Wood could play on any line. However, if he can contribute to the bottom six like he did last season, he will make a huge impact on the overall offensive identity of the team. Wood is at his best when he’s taking advantage of the other team’s mistakes. His speed is well known. His ability to catch the other team napping is where he makes other teams pay with his speed.

Wood has an important role as one of the veterans on the team this season. He will be 26 years old at the start of next season. That means only Tomas Tatar and Andreas Johnsson are older than him amongst the forwards. He needs to show he can be someone who can drive the team when they need a goal or need a stop. He was much better at staying out of the penalty box last season, so hopefully, he can keep that trend going. He only had 29 penalty minutes in 55 regular-season games.

Wood should play on the bottom six still. He is really good at what he does, but what he does is at its best when he is playing less than top-line minutes. Wood should be a threat that makes teams think twice about playing matchups. He could mimic his offensive numbers next season if things hit right.

Creative Wood Specialists officially expands business – News-Herald - News-Herald.com

It’s never too late to grow.

For years, that sentiment swirled in the head of Jim DiFranco, co-owner of Creative Wood Specialists.

Starting his independent custom design company over 25 years ago, the Painesville Township resident knew expansion was on the horizon, he just hadn’t pinpointed a precise time or location.

However, as of this month, DiFranco and his wife, Shellie, have seen their vision of evolution come to fruition with their new kitchen cabinet showroom located at 1536 Madison Ave.

Painesville Township-based Creative Wood Specialists sells to homeowners, remodelers, and builders, and has been in business for over 25 years. (Chad Felton — The News-Herald)

“We started off installing trim and cabinets for new homes and then we moved into remodeling, which is where I started to really enjoy working on kitchens,” DiFranco said. “Before this, whenever we would install kitchens, we always bought from a big-box store and I thought if we could have our own line of cabinets then we could eliminate the bottleneck, which would ensure we have the right product.

“When we decided to open a (kitchen) showroom in our existing building, it took almost a year,” he added. “I had to reorganize my whole existing sheet metal shop to make room. The novel coronavirus pandemic did slow us down a little with getting supplies and people to work, but it also made us really amp up our cleaning around the shop, which turned out to be a good thing. We were fortunate not to be slowed too much in our plans moving forward.”

Creative Wood Specialists sells to homeowners, remodelers and builders. The company employs three people.

DiFranco noted he is looking to add a couple more people now that the business is officially open.

“I have been remodeling and building my whole life, and I attend several kitchen seminars throughout the year to keep up on the latest trends,” he said. “We are very excited to finally get the doors open. I would like to thank all our existing customers, many of which have been with us from the beginning.

“It’s been a lot of long nights and weekends working to make sure that everything is right and functional. We are hoping the community will see we offer a quality-built product with competitive pricing and friendly service.

To contact Creative Wood Specialists, call 440-669-1024 or email Jim DiFranco at CWS0047@gmail.com.

The View From Swamptown: Elder Edwin R. Wood was a man of God like no other - The Independent

sedar.indah.link

This week in our ongoing exploration of South County’s famed quirky curiosities, we are going to examine the life and times of our area’s 19th century celebrity preacher, Elder Edwin R Wood. Read on and enjoy.

It has been said that Elder Edwin Wood married more couples and preached at more funerals than any other clergyman in South County. But Wood was more than that; he was a celebrity of sorts, the epitome of an old fashioned Yankee preacher, a living link, in his day, between the 19th and 20th centuries. Edwin Wood was born in 1832 in the little mill village of Crompton. At the age of 7 he was sent off by his family to work in those mills. Eight years later, the 15-year-old had had enough; he ran off, made his way to New Bedford and shipped out on a two year whaling voyage. This was the beginning of a 15-year career at sea; somehow in the midst of it all, he met and married Abby Reynolds of Exeter. One can only imagine the life they had; voyages of from two to four years in length were not uncommon at that time. Wood’s conversion from deep sea sailor to man of God was said to have happened at sea when he was 30 years of age. After this voyage, he returned to the Exeter farm of his wife’s parents never to sail again. After “much study and serious contemplation” Wood was ordained as a pastor of the Advent Christian Church and took the helm of the Exeter congregation, located just west of the Exeter/North Kingstown border. Wood, who later built himself a home at the end of Old Baptist Road in North Kingstown, also shared preaching duties with the various pastors of the Lafayette, Shannock, Frenchtown, and Chestnut Hill Churches.

Elder Wood was a man of God and a man with a presence. Over six feet tall, thinly built with a long flowing beard, he’d pace back and forth during his sermons swinging his great long arms around for emphasis. He was a sermonizer, an exhorter, a man willing to point the finger at wrong doers; cut from the same cloth as Cotton Mather or Jonathan Edwards he had no problem with fire and brimstone. Wood was a preacher of the Gospel, a revivalist, an evangelist known to stop in his tracks, midstream through a sermon, and break into a rousing chorus of “Rescue the Perishing” or “I Have Anchored my Soul in the Haven of Rest.” He’d stack up well against the best Baptist Tent Revivalist. Wood was a showman with a mission, a splash of Swamp Yankee color, a genuine celebrity with just a hint of the knock-about deep sea sailor he once was, who would regularly take his show on the road for all who would listen.

The word got out about Elder Wood before long. Sought after by individual souls and congregations alike, he traveled across the countryside praying and preaching his mighty version of the Gospel. Soon couples were coming out of the woodwork, knocking on his door entreating the humble preacher to marry them. Newspaper accounts exist of folks waking the good pastor from his sleep to perform marriages. He was always being called upon to eulogize someone’s dearly departed relation and he preached at literally hundreds of funerals across the region. His is truly the most common name in the marriage and death records of southern Rhode Island. Elder Edwin Wood was a local phenomenon at the time when the 1800s were becoming the 1900s and the world as it was sat poised to change forever.

Elder Wood preached his last sermon on New Year’s Day in 1905 at his beloved Exeter Advent Church. Two weeks later, the 75-year-old one-time child millworker, former sailor, and simple preacher was dead from pneumonia. The whole region mourned his loss, although I suspect that few realized that with Wood’s death, an era ended in southern Rhode Island. You can bet that they all sang “I Have Anchored My Soul in the Haven of Rest” as they lowered Edwin Wood into his final resting place at the ancient cemetery of the Chestnut Hill Baptist Church.

Back to the Future II Was a Surreal Experience for Elijah Wood - Gizmodo

Elijah Wood has had a long career—Sin City, The Faculty, Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings just to name a few—but there’s one entry at the start of his resume we’ll never forget.

Wood played “Video Game Boy” in Back to the Future II in a brief but classic scene. Upon entering Cafe ‘80s—in 2015—Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly notices two young boys plugging in an arcade game called Wild Gunman. They aren’t sure how to play it so he gives them an expert demonstration. “You mean you have to use your hands?” Wood said, off-camera, before the other boy (John Thornton) follows up with, “That’s like a baby’s toy.” They both shake their heads in disgust and leave Marty deeply confused.

Speaking with Deadline’s video series The Film That Lit My Fuse, Wood was asked what films got him interested in acting. Growing up in Iowa, the actor told them there wasn’t really anything specific it hinged on. “The story goes, my mom saw a commercial when I was five. I had a lot of energy and she thought that would be a great outlet for his energy.” But he did name a few films he saw early in life that he has vivid memories of. “I remember seeing Gremlins when I was young, Back to the Future, the original Back to the Future was something I saw as a kid and I loved...The Goonies. But I never watched those movies thinking that I could ever have anything to do with them or that that would be a vocation of mine.”

Though he did get his start in commercials, his first film role turned out to be Back to the Future II. “That was wild because it took what I understood about cinema and put it into this very real realm. And I think that may actually sort of be the first time that I think I was able to reference that based on what I had seen, to what I was physically doing,” he explained. “Which isn’t to say I didn’t understand the work that I had done prior in commercials as it being, you know, an acting role that people would see. But when it’s referencing a movie that I grew up watching and suddenly I’m in that environment, was completely mind-blowing. And so that may have been the first time that it sort of registered to me what this was and that this could be a life, I suppose.”

A life indeed. Do you remember when you first realized it was Wood in that small role after he’d become more famous?
