Expo Building Helped Showcase Booming Furniture Industry | News, Sports, Jobs - Jamestown Post Journal

sedar.indah.link

The Jamestown Furniture Mart Building has captured the city’s attention in recent weeks, as contractors worked to secure bricks on its outer layer that had presented a public safety concern.

The building represents an important part of the city’s history, especially in manufacturing.

From the early 1800s until the mid-1900s, the city was well-known for its furniture industry. The city even earned the nickname “The Furniture Capital of the World,” as a result of its booming furniture manufacturing industry.

As the city’s reputation for producing quality furniture increased, the Furniture Mart Building was designed in the early 1900s. The property was constructed to showcase the region’s furniture and hold expositions.

According to information included in “The Jamestown Furniture Industry,” a book by Clarence Carlson, construction on the corner of West Second and Washington streets began in 1916 and was completed in 1917.

The building was designed to be fireproof, with an outward layer of brick and an inward structure composed of steel.

The Furniture Mart Building, also known as the Furniture Exposition Building, was regularly used by manufacturers to show off its new furniture.

While manufacturers initially enjoyed early success as a result of the building’s popularity, a lack of growth and increased competition in different regions eventually caused Jamestown to lose its dominance in the furniture business, Carlson wrote in his book.

In the years following the decline of the city’s furniture manufacturing business, the building has been used for a variety of purposes. Today, it is primarily used for commercial office space.

Crystal Surdyk, city director of development, noted the Furniture Mart Building’s important place in the city’s history.

The Furniture Mart Building in Jamestown represents the legacy of the city as a furniture manufacturing center. After opening in 1917 at the corner of West Second and Washington streets, the building was used to display furniture for important exhibitions. Photos by the Fenton Historical Center

“Jamestown was once the furniture capital of the world,” she said. “To build a whole building in the center of town that was dedicated to displaying the furniture that was manufactured here, I think that was kind of a huge thing.”

The structure also helped put the city on the map. “It was really a national marketplace,” Surdyk said.

Recently, part of Second Street had to be closed as a result of bricks falling from the top of the building. R.E. Kelley, a contractor from Buffalo, worked to secure bricks at the top of the building and removed any loose bricks. Netting was also installed to prevent any additional bricks from falling to the ground.

City officials then reopened West Second Street to the public.

“There are plans in place and still really being developed to redevelop the building itself,” Surdyk said. “I’m sure that this brick stabilization and restoration will end up becoming part of that overall project.”

She added, “There are still plans that are taking shape and hopefully soon we’ll have some more information about what the future of the Furniture Mart is going to be.”

Iron City Furniture expands - The Tribune | The Tribune - Ironton Tribune

sedar.indah.link

Iron City Hardware has recently expanded its furniture operation into a building across the alley on Second Street.

“We needed more space for furniture,” said owner Jim Hacker.

He said their sales of furniture had been going up and they needed more space.

Email newsletter signup

“We have a full floor upstairs,” said Hacker, as he sat behind the hardware store’s counter. “It is just that there has been more demand for furniture, we needed more space. So we moved in next door.”

As for why furniture sales have been increasing, Hacker said he didn’t know exactly, but thought that “maybe people are just tired of the big box stores.”

And Iron City Furniture stocks a lot of things.

“We have couches, dining sets, chairs… whatever people want,” Hacker said.

The new furniture space is run by Hacker’s son-in-law, Ford Rucker.

Iron City Hardware has been a fixture in downtown Ironton for nearly a century. And it has been owned and operated by the Hacker family the whole time.

“My grandfather, Herman Hacker started it in 1926,” said Hacker.

His father, Don Hacker, and his brother, John Hacker, took it over in the mid-1950s.

Jim Hacker took over the daily operations in the early 1990s, but he started working at the store much earlier than that.

“I’ve worked here since I was 14,” Hacker said.

After he got off from school he would head downtown to work at the family store.

The Hacker men were all in the hardware business for so long, that there are four Golden Hammers on the wall of Iron City Hardware that celebrate four of the Hacker men, Jim, Herman, Don and John, for being in the business for 50 years.

Can Buyback Programs, AI, and Blockchain Rid the Industry of Knockoff Furniture? | Architectural Digest - Architectural Digest

sedar.indah.link

Going after fake products and those who manufacture or sell them is an urgent and worthwhile pursuit, but to truly stem the market for counterfeit design means weaning buyers off cheap knockoffs in the first place. “We’ve been focusing a lot of our time on the education part of [the problem],” says Sherri Simko, president of Be Original Americas, a nonprofit organization advocating for authentic design. “From a grassroots perspective, if you are getting to the people who are making those decisions”—i.e. consumers and specifiers—“it’s a lot easier than trying to combat it from the top down, where you really don’t have the legality to do much.”

Through events, exhibitions, fellowships, and CEU courses for emerging designers and professionals, Be Original Americas (and other organizations like it in Denmark and Australia) hope to create a wider awareness and appreciation for the creative, financial, health, and environmental benefits of buying authentic design. To Simko, choosing to buy lesser-quality knockoff furniture to save money doesn’t make sense when we’re so quick to invest $1,000 in an iPhone that just gets replaced every few years. “If you’re coveting that particular iconic piece, save your money and buy something that will stay with you forever, and/or has a great resale value,” she advises. Authentic design doesn’t have to be expensive, she continues, citing Be Original Americas member Blu Dot, a brand that offers original and high-quality design at accessible price points.

In addition to buyback programs, anti-counterfeiting technology, and consumer education, eliminating knockoffs will ultimately require a sea change in how design goods are produced, talked about, and valued. The knowledge of connoisseurs that helps specialists discern reproductions from authentic designs needs to be made more available to a wider public, so they can make better-informed decisions when buying new or vintage pieces.

Brands may also want to consider partnering with the design tastemakers that help spark furniture fads. It’s through these figures that manufacturers can introduce consumers to the rich stories behind the objects, and in so doing, build cachet for the real thing. And to make original design more attractive for the next generation of consumers, brands and designers must find more ways to develop products at approachable prices. Creating these shifts in the marketplace and minds of consumers will be a gradual process. But hopefully, rejecting fakes in favor of originals can become a way for people to show off not only their great taste, but also their investment in a more ethical and sustainable future.

AUSTIN, TXAustin Resource Recovery (ARR), a department of the City of Austin, the University of Texas (UT) Office of Sustainability, and the UT New Student Services Off-Campus Initiative will host MoveOutATX, an annual donation event in West Campus. Students can drop off unwanted furniture, household items, appliances, clothing, cleaning supplies, unopened food and more at six donation stations located throughout West Campus July 28-31 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. daily. The program offers a convenient way to provide local reuse organizations with unwanted items still in good condition. These items will only be accepted during operating hours.

Additionally, MoveOutATX will pilot a Free Furniture Market this year. Participating reuse organizations will transfer donated furniture to the “market” located at UT Austin Wright-Whitaker Sports Complex. All Austinites may take what they would like and keep these items out of the landfill. Items will be made available on a "first-come, first-served" basis. Participants must be able to load and transport items themselves and will be required to sign a liability waiver. The market will be open to the public on the same days, from 2:30-7 p.m.

Community volunteers are needed to staff the donation stations and Free Furniture Market. Volunteers are provided cold water, electrolyte drinks, snacks, cool-it towels and discounts to local businesses. Volunteers can sign-up for shifts at MoveOutATX.org

“In addition to keeping valuable resources out of the landfill and giving them back to the community, MoveOutATX provides a solution to problems caused by stacking furniture and household things in alleyways, backstreets and parking lots,” said Austin Resource Recovery Director Ken Snipes. “These conditions can lead to public health issues and create barriers to emergency vehicle access.”

Dates, times and locations:
MoveOutATX donation station operational times are daily Thursday, July 28 to Sunday, July 31 from 11 a.m.-6p.m. Locations:

  • 2207 Rio Grande, across from Hardin House

Canales Furniture opens new show room, headquarters in Arlington - The Dallas Morning News

sedar.indah.link

A family-owned furniture store has opened a new show room and corporate headquarters in Arlington.

Canales Furniture moved into an old Fry’s Electronics along I-20 this month, following an extensive renovation of the 200,000-square-foot space.

“This store honestly feels like home. When you walk in you are greeted like a sister, a mother, a brother, a grandma,” the store’s project manager Giovanna Villalpando said in a prepared statement. “We just want you to feel comfortable.”

Canales received help from Arlington to renovate the building. Last year, the City Council approved a $1.5 million grant — about half of the total renovation cost — for the store. The grant will be paid over the next three years.

In addition, Canales will receive $1,000 for every Arlington resident hired, with a limit of $100,000.

Arlington also bought part of the old Fry’s property for $3.4 million and will either sell it to the Canales family within the next five years or redevelop it.

The Canales family opened their first store in Arlington 19 years ago. The company has since grown into one of the largest furniture stores in the region with 17 locations.

Furniture Retailers Should Be “Clienteling” - HFA - Home Furnishings Association

sedar.indah.link

A major shift is happening in the retail industry from products to relationships. Studies show customers want a relationship with somebody they can trust. They want more than product reviews. They want an expert, somebody who knows their tastes, budget, upcoming needs and will let them know when the things they want are on sale.

In addition, today’s customers are sophisticated and use technology to enhance human relationships. Retail has to keep up or die. Furniture retail is no different.

How do furniture retailers build long-term relationships with clients at scale? The answer is a process called clienteling.

What is clienteling?

By definition, it’s a technique used by retail sales associates to build long-term relationships with key customers.”

Clienteling has become a bit of a buzzword recently. At Clientbook, we’d like to think we’ve played a small part in evangelizing this message. After all, we’ve come to be known as “The Clienteling Company.” That’s cool with us since we built our entire business aimed at helping retailers turn first-time customers into long-term clients.

How will clienteling help your store and sales associates?

Be Backs: One of the challenges we commonly hear from furniture sales associates is their struggle with “be backs.” A customer comes in, browses, and says they’ll be back, only never to be seen again.

The right clienteling tool can help furniture sales associates capture all the important and relevant prospect details, including their likes and preferences, making it easy to build a relationship with them beyond their initial visit.

Out of Stock: Currently, most furniture stores are dealing with supply chain issues and out-of-stock items. While this is a challenge, it also presents an opportunity.

Effectively clienteling will enable your sales associates to stay in touch with clients and provide timely updates while their items are on backorder. They can even upsell complementary in-stock items while clients wait.

Sales Cadence: Every day, furniture store owners wish their sales associates had a way to know when to reach out to clients and what to have them say. After all, many associates are still trying to manage their clients on an old-school Rolodex of cards. Those days are over.

With the right clienteling software, your sales associates can create the perfect sales cadence by delivering the right message to the right client at the right time.

How to get started.

Clienteling 101 is building on-going and sustainable relationships with customers. There are best practices every furniture retailer should adopt to be successful with clienteling:

  1. Bring client information into one place.

Furniture retailers have data in multiple silos (notebooks, spreadsheets, 3rd party messaging apps, point of sales systems, and more), making it difficult, if not impossible, to effectively clientele.

This can take time, so a good place to start is by identifying all the different places in which your client information currently resides.

  1. Make it easy.

The Clientbook clienteling tool will enable sales associates to never miss a customer follow-up by automatically creating task reminders based on staff and store best practices. Putting common tasks like sending reviews and payment links or creating wish lists right at the fingertips of your sales associates will make life so much easier for them. They’ll thank you.

  1. Automate for scale.

For most retailers, clienteling isn’t done consistently simply because it’s too manual, too time-consuming, and impossible to scale when you have thousands of clients.

Depending on the industry, a good sales associate has between 500 and 1,000 clients. That’s a lot of personal notes, texts, emails to write, anniversaries, service dates, product updates, and even names to remember.

Clientbook can help you start by taking the data you’ve collected and use it to create a sequence for the post-sales journey. Hitting clients with the right message at the right time will bring them back to the store again and again while freeing up the sales associate from the manual “grunt work,” allowing them to do what they do best – sell.

What your furniture clients will experience through clienteling is a retailer who knows them, recommends products that complement past purchases, and knows when they are buying and what they can afford.

Shopifiy’s Test App Can Delete All Your Furniture - Review Geek

sedar.indah.link
Shopify Apple AR reset room app
@StrangeNative

Earlier this year at WWDC, Apple released its RoomPlan API for developers to tap into AR features on iOS devices. Now, we’re seeing an incredible use of the technology thanks to a new demo video released by the Canadian e-commerce brand Shopify.

In the short video below, you’ll watch all the furniture in a cluttered room magically disappear. Shopify is using Apple’s AR API to “reset” a room, essentially clearing it out so potential shoppers can see what a new bed, TV, or desk would look like in their space.

IKEA has offered something similar for several years but uses older, outdated technology. Thanks to a LiDAR-equipped iPhone, the results are impressive in this latest example.

The demonstration comes courtesy of Russ Maschmeyer, an AR/VR developer with Shopify, who published several tweets showcasing their new AR technology that uses Apple’s AR APIs. As you can see above, the user scans the entire room, then hits reset and quickly deletes everything out of the room.

According to Maschmeyer, “AR makes it easy to try new couches, but the couch already in your space can get in the way… What if every room had a reset button? Space Erase models spaces in high-fidelity—capturing room-defining objects, their size, position, and orientation.”

The software makes a digital copy of the room, removes all the content, and gives shoppers a fresh canvas to work with. By itself, Apple’s AR technology isn’t offered as a stand-alone app. Instead, RoomPlan is an API that developers can access and integrate into existing or new apps, similar to what Shopify is doing here.

Either way, this is pretty impressive, and it leaves me waiting to see what Apple and Shopify have in store next.
