With growth stocks getting clobbered lately, Cathie Wood's hyper-growth-focused Ark Innovation ETF has been under pressure. The market seems to have fallen out of love with the tech sector, but the famous investor is treating dramatic pullbacks as an opportunity to build positions in stocks with explosive potential.

The multitude of risk factors on the table suggests that growth stocks could continue to see bumpy trading in the near term, but long-term investors may be able to score massive wins by following Wood's lead on some recent moves. Here's a look at three stocks recently purchased in the Ark Innovation ETF that stand out as worthwhile buys right now.

1. Roblox

Roblox ( RBLX 8.73% ) provides a virtual world that plays host to thousands of games and experiences, and the company's metaverse has emerged as a popular channel for online socialization. Users can create their own games and content, and make real-world money if other players interact with their creations. The platform's user-generated content ecosystem makes way for new experiences to be added to the Roblox universe all the time. 

However, the company has seen engagement growth and average revenue per user soften somewhat as some pandemic-related tailwinds have eased. As a result, Roblox's share price is down roughly 72% from its lifetime high, and the company is now valued at roughly $21.8 billion and seven times this year's expected sales. 

The company's performance update for January showed that the business is continuing to add users at a healthy clip, but the market appears to have lost confidence in the stock. The business is not currently profitable and is facing growth deceleration and pullbacks along with other key metrics. Average spending per user in January is estimated to have dropped roughly 22.5% year over year , but Roblox still has an appealing growth outlook, and big pullbacks for the stock have created an attractive buying opportunity for long-term investors. 

2. Zoom

Perhaps no other company embodies the concept of a "pandemic stock" better than Zoom Video Communications ( ZM 5.47% ). Engagement for the company's services surged amid the height of social distancing and shelter-in-place conditions, but investors have sold out of the stock as conditions have moved closer to a state of normalcy in many parts of the world. 

Zoom stock is now down roughly 47% year to date, 76% from its 52-week high, and roughly 83% from the lifetime high that it hit in October 2020. Talk about a pullback. Despite the dramatic valuation slide, the business has continued to serve up solid performance, and Wood's recent moves to buy the stock suggest she continues to see plenty of growth potential ahead. 

Zoom's revenue rose 21% year over year in the fourth quarter to reach $1.07 billion , and the company closed out 2021 with sales of roughly $4.1 billion -- up 55% on an annual basis. While the company is seeing growth decelerate and facing challenging comparisons as it laps periods with highly pandemic-driven engagement, it actually looks attractively valued in the context of its growth. Zoom now has a market capitalization of roughly $29.1 billion and is valued at roughly 6.4 times this year's expected sales and 27.9 times expected earnings.

3. Roku

Roku ( ROKU 10.80% ) is another "pandemic stock" that Cathie Wood has been buying on the heels of dramatic pullbacks. The streaming video-and-digital advertising company's share price is down roughly 57% across 2022's trading and 80% from its high. 

Following recent sell-offs, Roku's market capitalization has been pushed down to roughly $13.3 billion, and it's valued at just 3.6 times this year's expected sales. The company's leading position in the streaming-hardware space paved the way for it to build a fast-growing digital advertising unit, and it has continued to post strong performance despite the easing of some pandemic-driven tailwinds. Roku's revenue surged 55% year over year in 2021, and gross profits surged 74% compared to prior-year to reach $2.285 billion. 

This is another instance where tough comparisons to pandemic-driven performance are showing up in the form of substantial growth decelerations, but the company's guidance for revenue growth of roughly 25% in the first quarter hardly looks extremely distressing in context. Television advertising budgets are still in the early stages of migrating to streaming-based distribution, and Roku is in a strong position to continue serving up wins, despite what its recent stock performance might suggest.

Climate-Smart Studs Made of Paper: Wood Tube

Among the many difficulties that the construction industry currently faces, confronting the climate emergency continues to be one of the main challenges. In fact, considering that the sector is responsible for around 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions, aiming towards net-zero, carbon-neutral architecture should and must be the top priority. Although there is a long way to go for most buildings to cancel out the amount of carbon dioxide they produce, the concept is quickly gaining traction and will certainly become the new norm as we look into the not-too-distant future. As a result, the following question arises: how can architects, designers and other actors involved in the industry contribute to sustainable design and net-zero architecture?

Simply put, the answer can be summed up in one word: innovation. Throughout the years, those from the design world have witnessed huge milestones in the construction sector, from digital fabrication to 3D technologies, more advanced construction techniques and improved manufacture processes. Therefore, they have acquired the necessary knowledge and tools to innovate, resulting in new, more-climate smart building materials and products. With this in mind, Swedish company Wood Tube, a member of the world leading bioeconomy cluster Paper Province, has launched a new innovative product that has recently entered its commercial phase: lightweight studs made of wood-based pulp. These are cost-effective, easy to work with and, above all, contribute to a more sustainable construction process – hence showing great promise in the mission towards net-zero architecture.

From a simple idea to an innovative construction material

A stud is a vertical framing member which, traditionally made of timber or steel, forms part of a wall or partition. They hold in place windows, doors, insulation, utilities and other crucial building elements. Wood Tube, however, is made of a wood fibre that is chemically or mechanically reduced to pulp and is typically used in the manufacture of paper. To get more insight and understand how the idea came about, we spoke with Tobias Söderbom Olsson from Wood Tube. He shared that the product was born when its inventors, Kurt Härdig and Patrik Kämpe, passed a construction site while they walked in the city and noticed the amount of steel used.

“With a background in the paper industry, they asked themselves: what if we could build with paper instead? With this idea stuck in their heads, they designed a stud to construct interior walls, and that’s how the Wood Tube paper stud was born.” - Tobias Söderbom Olsson

Contributing to a more sustainable built environment

Currently, the paper studs are manufactured in Säffle, Värmland (Sweden), a region known for its rich forests and strong bioeconomy, which is also where the raw material comes from. The result is a fully bio-based product that can be recycled like regular cardboard and is made from FSC certified paper, meaning that it is proven to come from responsibly sourced wood fibre. In this way, the material shows a lot of potential regarding sustainability, especially when compared to traditional wood and steel alternatives.

In fact, a life-cycle analysis showed that Wood Tube emits 14 times less CO2 than a steel equivalent, lowering emissions by 92%. Considering that these are used in large volumes, this is a significant difference. And when it comes to replacing wood, the advantage is that using paper as a raw material is very resource efficient, since one tree can make four times more paper studs compared to standard wooden options. In other words, less material is needed, leaving more trees to grow in the forest and, at the same time, reducing costs. After all, wood is a beautiful and extremely functional material, so using more of it for load-bearing structures or other architectural elements that can be seen and experienced – instead of hiding it inside a wall – seems to point towards the right direction. Thus, Wood Tube contributes to a more sustainable industry by drastically reducing CO2 emissions and using forest raw materials more efficiently.

Easy installation and various applications

Regarding installation, the process is quite simple and straight-forward. “The walls are built in a traditional manner compared to wall framing with steel studs, except you replace the steel with paper,” says Tobias Söderbom Olsson. And because of their light weight and softness, there is no heavy lifting or risk of cut wounds, significantly improving carpenters’ working conditions. Therefore, thanks to its easy installation, Wood Tube is ideal for a variety of uses. Even though the main application today is interior wall framing, they can be supplied in any shape and size to fit different functions. Hence, they are also suitable for furniture frames, creating rigid beds, sofas and doors, among others.

Recently, Swedish real estate company Vasakronan, together with construction company Veidekke, was the first to build with Wood Tube’s paper studs in Strömshuset, a well-known building with a strong environmental profile. Specifically, the studs were used in the interior walls of modern offices and commercial premises.

Looking into the future: affordable housing and greener cities

Ultimately, Wood Tube aims to contribute to a greener construction industry and enable access to safe, eco-friendly and affordable housing. How? By combining sustainability, high-performance, cost-effectiveness and simple installation, as well as making it easy for customers and architects to access and choose climate-smart products. In this sense, paper studs have the potential to revolutionize the housing sector and construction industry.

Miles Wood: 'It Was A New Reality I Had to Face' | FEATURE - New Jersey Devils

It may have been easier if he was a golfer.

There is no team to think about, it's just you, your club, and the ball.

But this wasn't that.

That's what Miles Wood was thinking about when it became time to seriously consider hip surgery, a surgery that would effectively wipe out the majority of his season. It was the hardest part in coming to terms with his decision to go the surgical route.  

"The hardest thing for me is if I played golf, it wouldn't be a problem because it's all about me, but when you bring a team environment into that choice, you're not only hurting yourself, but you're hurting the team. That was the toughest pill to swallow," Wood shared in an exclusive interview with NJD.TV.

Wood and the Devils medical and training staff went through every possible option before taking the surgical route. Wood described it as a process of X-rays of the hips, MRI's and consultations. He and the club exhausted all options before finalizing the decision and on Nov. 4 the decision was made. On Nov. 8, Wood was in surgery.

Even knowing it would serve his best interests long-term didn't make the decision any easier.

Miles Wood is a glue guy, he is a heartbeat of a team, of a game. He is your all-encompassing team-first guy, making the decision to remove himself from the majority of a season all that more difficult.

"(If it was) a golf thing, it wouldn't be a big problem because you know, all the pressures on you or whatever. But when you play in such a team atmosphere, day in and day out, and the fact that you're hurting 23 guys, I think that was the hardest part that I finally had to swallow."

Wood leaned on former teammates like Cory Schneider and John Moore, as well as Tyler Seguin who have all had a similar, if not identical procedure done. The 26-year-old is an introspective person and like acquiring information. Speaking to them put him at ease with his decision, recalling the Lightning's Nikita Kucherov's surgery and he came back and had a crazy playoff.

"It's been a long process for sure," he said taking a deep sigh.

Wood considered himself lucky that he didn't experience any setbacks, his road to recovery has been fairly smooth and linear, but what it has been is long. The days when the rest of the team was on the road were some of the harder days, where Wood described the room as 'very quiet' and a 'whole different atmosphere'. In its own way, that quiet served its own purpose, a motivation to get back as fast as he could, "because to skate with only two guys on the ice, doing gym work, day in and day out, it gets old quickly."

Relief.

That is the word that Wood uses when he's asked what it will be like to hear from the doctors that he's cleared to practice with his teammates. It's the only word he can utter before the emotion of the thought becomes too big. It becomes clear the magnitude of emotion that is flowing through the discussion.

Hw takes a brief pause.

For Wood to miss nearly one year, it is more than being away from his teammates, the game he loves, and the thrill of competition. It suddenly stripped away the biggest piece of his identity. It was another experience he had to come to terms with.

"When you play day-in and day-out, you don't really think of the fact that you know," he said, "if I don't play for a year it's not a big deal, but it is a huge deal. And I think the thing for me that I learned the most throughout this process is your best days are playing hockey and your worst days are playing hockey."

Wood said this entire experience put him in a position where he had to face a new reality, but it is one that also offered him a new perspective.

"When I finally came to that choice of doing the surgical route," he said, "when hockey is stripped away from you in a moment, that's when it's like, it puts it in perspective real quick, of what the game actually means to you. And it was a very eye-opening thing for me."

His journey back to health is not fully complete yet, but as he rejoins his teammates at practice, even in a no-contact jersey, the finish line finally looks more in sight. Part of his identity is slowly being pieced back together.

"Once I start to get back into the team practices at that point, I think the Miles Wood is back."

It feels safe to say that when that next step beyond practice arrives and he straps on the skates and puts on his No. 44 Devils jersey for the first time this season, he'll have a new perspective on what this game means to him.

"Just not take it for granted. I just can't wait to get back," Wood said. "It's been a long, very long process, something that I didn't think could happen, but clearly, it did, the cards were dealt. But I can't wait to get back and playing with the guys."

And neither can they.

Leigh Wood produced a stunning comeback win to halt Michael Conlan with a brutal knockout in the 12th round and retain his WBA "regular" world featherweight title Saturday in front of his home city crowd at the Nottingham Arena in England.

For the second successive fight, Wood clinched the victory in the final round, but the dramatic finish was overshadowed by immediate concern for Conlan, who fell backward through the ropes and off the ring apron.

Conlan was treated by medics at ringside and was quickly taken to a nearby hospital, where he was conscious and in stable condition, according to a spokesperson for Matchroom, which promoted the fight.

For Wood (26-2, 16 KOs), 33, it was another late, dramatic win after he produced an upset to stop China's Xu Can in the final round last year in his first world title fight. Wood was dominated early on, including being knocked down in the first round, but he recovered to floor Conlan late in the 11th round and resumed his attack in the 12th, knocking Conlan through the ropes at 1 minute, 25 seconds amid a barrage of punches.

"I hit him with everything, but he's so tough," Wood said. "I'm just thinking about Mick now. It was a bad knockout."

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn echoed Wood's concern for Conlan.

"We should be celebrating one of the best knockouts I've ever seen, but our thoughts are with Michael right now," Hearn said.

Conlan (16-1, 8 KOs), 30, from Belfast, Northern Ireland, had controlled much of the fight and nearly took the title in the opening round. Wood did most of the pressing in the first but was then caught by a cleverly disguised left hand from Conlan late in the round, which left him flat on his back for a count.

It was a great shot from Conlan, who had Wood in trouble again early in the second round as he continually found Wood with his left hooks. Wood looked dazed for much of the second round, getting caught with clean left hooks as Conlan stamped his authority on the fight.

Conlan, the 2012 Olympic bronze medalist, began the third carefully, before staggering Wood with a right hand in the last minute of the round. But the fight turned in the fourth round as Wood fought back, attacking with flurries of punches.

Wood showed plenty of aggression in Rounds 5 and 6, but the cleaner and sharper punches came from the challenger. In the sixth, Conlan nailed Wood with a crunching right hook to the chin that the champion did well to shrug off.

Wood showed plenty of heart in the eighth, when he put Conlan under the most pressure he had experienced to that point in the fight. Wood was full of fire in the 10th round, giving Conlan a torrid time when the Irishman was sat on the ropes.

Wood was getting tagged in the 11th, but he found the strength and courage under pressure to land a left hook that sent Conlan to the canvas. Conlan complained it was a slip, but he was still given a count at the end of the 11th, and it spurred on Wood to produce a stunning turnaround in the final round again.

At the start of the 12th, Wood launched a ferocious and relentless attack, which left Conlan out on his feet before the Irishman collapsed through the ropes, falling backward out of the ring.

So much for the Green New Deal. I’ve shut my heat pump off and switched back to my wood furnace because it’s cheaper to heat with wood. Those that say wood is carbon neutral should camp out over the top of my chimney for a day.

On another note, why do the Democrats seem so intent on driving the last stake through Donald Trump’s heart when he’s the only one they have a chance to beat in 2024? It’s just throwing away 80,000 barrels of bad ink they’ve imposed on him. I think a ticket of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina could win 40 states without campaigning.

The Cohasset City Council approved plans for a $440 million wood mill in a raucous meeting Tuesday night where council members shouted their votes over activists' interjections.

The five-person council was charged with determining whether the environmental review Huber Engineered Woods submitted was sufficient.

The state Legislature exempted Huber from needing to complete a lengthier environmental impact statement typically required for projects of its size, and the Cohasset City Council's decision kept that exemption intact.

Numerous project supporters in the audience applauded after the vote, which was unanimous.

Environmental and Indigenous activists will likely appeal the decision and challenge other aspects of the permitting process that remains. The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe says the mill, a mile from its reservation border, would impact treaty rights in nearby public forests.

The 750,000-square-foot oriented strand board mill would consume about 400,000 cords of mostly aspen wood annually — a 14% increase from current statewide harvest levels.

Huber's review found the state's forests could sustainably handle the increased logging, but opponents say the review did not focus on local timber resources.

The plant would also be a major greenhouse gas emitter, which Huber said would be offset by trapping carbon in its wood products and using wood-burning furnaces.

Huber wants to get the plant running by 2025 and expects to employ 150 people. Millions in public grants, loans and incentives have been approved for the mill, which still requires a number of state and federal permits before construction can begin.

Three men were found wounded after a shooting early Sunday morning at a bowling alley in Wood Dale.

At approximately 1:10 a.m. Sunday at Wood Dale Bowl, located at 155 Irving Park Rd., police responded to reports of multiple shots, authorities said.

According an eyewitness from the scene, a physical fight broke out between two groups of men , which escalated into shots being fired, police said.

A 24-year-old man was shot in the leg and taken to an area hospital for surgery. He is reported to be in stable condition, according to police.

Police said a 30-year-old man was shot in the arm, while a 23-year-old man was shot in the leg. Both men were taken to area hospitals for treatment and have since been released.

No one was in custody as of Sunday morning and Wood Dale police were investigating.

Bobby Wood Scores First Goal Of Season, Gives RSL Second Half Lead - KSL Sports

SALT LAKE CITY – Less than two minutes into the second half of a scoreless match, RSL forward Bobby Wood took a rebound and deposited it into the back of the net giving RSL a 1-0 lead.

The fixture marks the home opener for Real Salt Lake and the second game of the season for both clubs. Real Salt Lake enters the contest having picked up a scoreless point on the road against Dallas while Seattle fell 1-0 to Nashville SC at home in a shock result.

After a number of squandered scoring opportunities in the first 46 minutes, a Seattle turnover in the offensive end led to the scoring chance. Justin Meram crossed a pass to Maikel Chang who found Wood in front of the goal. Wood’s initial right-footed attempt was block but his second shot rang true, finding the back of the net as the first RSL goal of the year.

The return of last year’s captain, Albert Rusnák, has attracted the interest of many sports fans across the state. Rusnák and Real Salt Lake failed to come to a new agreement earlier this year following the conclusion of his contract at the end of the 2021 season. Therefore, Rusnák decided it was in his best interest to sign with Seattle, a club that has plucked Real Salt Lake talent away from its grasp on countless occasions to this point.

Freddy Juarez, Craig Waibel and Garth Lagerway are just a few of the RSL luminaries to find themselves in Seattle.

Aaron Herrera, who missed the opening game of the season with a red card suspension following last year’s dismissal in the Western Conference Final, is listed as out as he returns from hamstring and groin injuries. Nick Besler, Rubio Rubin, David Ochoa, Damir Kreilach and Zack Farnsworth all missed the game as well.

How about a little late night Yahtzee?

With all attention now on the class of 2023, the Kentucky Wildcats football team continues the momentum on the recruiting trail, as they picked up a commitment from in-state offensive tackle Malachi Wood on Saturday night.

Wood took to twitter to announce the news.

The 6-8 and 289-pound tackle out of Madison Central High School in Richmond committed to the Cats over offers from Louisville, West Virginia, Maryland, Purdue and Kansas among others.

Wood is currently ranked as a 3-star prospect, according to the On3 consensus rankings, which also have him as the ninth-best recruit in the state.

With a revamped offensive staff, including new offensive line coach Zach Yenser, Wood’s commitment further points to the brand that the Big Blue Wall, has built.

If you look at the roster over the last several seasons, you will see high level contributors from the state, including Drake Jackson, Landon Young and Eli Cox. It also shows that the state is producing offensive-line talent at a high level. Wood is just the latest player from Kentucky to choose to stay home and play for the Cats.

With Wood’s commitment, he becomes the fourth commitment in the class alongside Shamar Porter, Kaden Moorman, and Ty Bryant. He is also the third commitment from the state, joining Moorman (Franklin County) and Bryant (Frederick Douglass).

Desperate Russian Rear-Area Troops Are Armoring Their Vehicles With Wood Logs - The War Zone

Ukrainian roads have quickly become a killing ground for Russian convoys moving through hostile territory amid a reportedly worsening logistics situation. While losses of heavily armored tanks and armored personnel carriers to anti-tank weapons are piling up, far less fortified vehicles are vulnerable even to small arms fire. Losses of light and unarmored vehicles trying to ferry men and materiel to advancing Russian forces are also increasing. As a result, Russian drivers have gotten creative in fortifying their trucks for the deadly roads leading ever deeper into Ukraine.

Images of Russian KAMAZ trucks appeared Saturday showing logs stacked on the front bumper as additional improvised armor. Crews even managed to retain their distinctive “V” markings seen on Russian vehicles in the sector. Other vehicles use wood boards and junk metal to protect their most vulnerable frontal areas.

The three vehicles look to be carrying PMP pontoon bridge elements, a valuable logistics asset and one of the Ukrainian forces’ preferred targets alongside fuel trucks. A PMP bridge was likely set up over the Pripyat River in the Belarusian side of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone in the final days leading up to the war.

The logs themselves appear cut from trees right behind the vehicles and are likely intended to protect the trucks’ radiators from small arms fire. The last thing any Russian vehicle crew wants is to survive an ambush only for the truck to overheat and break down nearby.

This is far from the first instance of Russian troops trying to improve their vehicles’ armor for their invasion of Ukraine. At least one captured T-72 tank had sandbags on its turret in a vain attempt to augment its explosive reactive armor blocks. Russian units have also carried logs onboard as a means to help vehicles escape the suffocating mud long feared by observers as a threat to the Russian military's off-road operations. This is in addition to the cage-like improvised armor that began appearing on Russian tanks before the invasion in an attempt to counter-drone and anti-tank guided-missile attacks.

As Russian forces have advanced into Ukraine, their supply lines back to friendly borders in Russia, Crimea, and Belarus have grown longer and thus require greater security.

Reports both from western defense officials and Russian leaks indicate varying levels of disarray in these supply lines, some of it indicative in the miles-long traffic jam of trucks and armor north of Kyiv seen stalled on satellite imagery. There is also an ongoing effort within Ukraine to dismantle road signs to confuse invading Russian forces and inviting wrong turns into waiting ambushes. 

Russian forces’ inability to secure these supply routes have made for a flood of videos and images documenting the charred and mangled wreckage after Ukrainian attacks. These attacks have come from Ukrainian ground forces, resistance fighters, as well as Ukrainian air raids using combat aircraft, helicopters, and Bayraktar TB-2 drones. Some ambushes have left many vehicles lightly damaged or abandoned on Ukrainian roads for fighters or even civilians to find and claim later. 

It’s not immediately clear how effective the logs will be in protecting Russian trucks’ radiators, or whether the added flammable material will make the trucks more vulnerable to incendiary attacks with partisans’ Molotov cocktails. Still, using wood as additional armor is not a novel concept, and considering how vulnerable overstretched elements of the Russian Army are to ambushes, anything is better than nothing.

In the end, necessity is the mother of invention and even if some logs will keep your radiator intact long enough to escape, that is probably worth the effort.

PARADISE, Nev. (AP) — Moses Wood had a career-high 28 points as Portland beat San Diego 73-55 in the second round of the West Coast Conference tournament on Friday night.

Chika Nduka had 14 points and seven rebounds for Portland (18-13). Kristian Sjolund added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Tyler Robertson had 10 points and nine assists.

Chris Austin, whose 14 points per game entering the contest was second on the Pilots, shot only 14 percent in the game (1 of 7).

Jase Townsend had 17 points and eight rebounds for the Toreros (15-16). Terrell Brown added 14 points and 12 rebounds. Yavuz Gultekin had eight rebounds.

Marcellus Earlington, whose 13 points per game coming into the contest led the Toreros, had only 6 points on 2-of-10 shooting.

Brian Hugh Warner, better known by his stage name Marilyn Manson, has sued his former partner Evan Rachel Wood today, on charges of defamation. Warner claims that the Westworld actor has defamed him by making statements that Warner abused and sexually assaulted her for years during their former relationship, which began when Wood was 18, and Warner was 37. Wood has long spoken about a former abusive partner, but only formally revealed that the man in question was Warner in February of 2021.

Wood’s allegations against Warner—which include statements featured in the upcoming HBO documentary Phoenix Rising, where she discusses how Warner “essentially raped” her during the filming of a music video—have led several other women to come forward with their own allegations against him, including Game Of Thrones actor Esmé Bianco. Wood has also worked in recent years to extend the statute of limitations in domestic violence cases in California through her advocacy for the Phoenix Act, a campaign that’s not hard to see as linked to her experiences with Warner.

Per Deadline, Warner’s suit gets pretty specific, accusing Wood of engineering a “conspiracy” that’s “derailed Warner’s successful music, TV, and film career.” (Warner was dropped by his label after multiple women came forward with allegations of abuse against him.)

Among other claims, Warner’s team says Wood and her associates hacked his computers and social media accounts, and allegedly sent a letter impersonating an FBI agent to other potential victims. (“Victims,” in the language of the suit.) They also accuse Wood of coaching possible accusers as to which accusations to levy against him.

Warner is reportedly seeking a jury trial, as well as as-yet unspecified damages.

The lawsuit arrives two weeks before Phoenix Rising, directed by Amy Berg, is set to arrive on HBO after a Sundance debut. Warner’s attorney has asserted that “Amy Berg and HBO are also victims of Wood” and co-defendant Illma Gore.

SF Giants stater Alex Wood shares interesting player's side of labor negotiations - Around the Foghorn

Labor negotiations broke down on Tuesday, which culminated in league commissioner Rob Manfred announcing that the first two series of the regular season have been canceled. It seemed as if discussions had progressed, but SF Giants starter Alex Wood indicated that the optimism was misleading.

The nine-year veteran argued that the optimism was largely driven by the media so that when negotiations fell apart, the players would be left to blame. He shared his thoughts on Twitter:

FWIW MLB has pumped to the media last night & today that there’s momentum toward a deal. Now saying the players tone has changed. So if a deal isn’t done today it’s our fault. This isn’t a coincidence. We’ve had the same tone all along. We just want a fair deal/to play ball.

Of course, fans have a lot of information at their disposal compared to previous labor negotiations, and hopefully, many could see right through this ploy. The truth remains that the player's association continues to bargain in good faith, but the same cannot be said about the owners.

Collective bargaining negotiations have been tense during this cycle as the players are demanding for better pay, fairer treatment, and improved competition. However, the owners hold a lot of the leverage in discussions as many of today's issues have carried over from previous decades.

For example, the rookie contract is typically a six-year pact. However, players have no leverage in negotiating salaries in the first three years of that contract. They are assigned a salary at the league minimum, which hovers around $575,000.00. They receive modest raises in those three seasons, but it does not typically match performance. Raising the salary for the pre-arbitration seasons is an important topic for the players.

Then, players go through the arbitration process in the final three years of that contract. During these years, players can, to an extent, negotiate their salary for the upcoming season but it still does not match performance. Of course, if you do not perform, then teams can non-tender you at no cost to them.

The player's union aimed to reduce the rookie contract to four seasons, but that was a non-starter for the owners, so the topic was dropped. This is just one concession that the players have made during labor negotiations.

Currently, the primary sticking point is the competitive balance tax (CBT) threshold. The CBT has effectively served as a "soft" salary cap in baseball. In 2021, that figure stood at $210 million and will likely see an increase next season when a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is ratified.

The players want a CBT in the neighborhood of $230 million for 2022, whereas the owners only want a modest increase of $214 million. A higher CBT gives teams more flexibility to spend in free agency, which is problematic for the owners.

Team valuations and league revenues have reached historic highs in recent seasons, but the owners try to play it off like it is not profitable being a team owner. That is simply not true.

Alex Wood's comments serve as a reminder that the cautious optimism that materialized on Monday was a media ploy. The players are the ones who want baseball to return, but the owners only want it back on their own terms. The good guys are the ones on the field, not the ones in the private suites.

Roku ( ROKU -2.09% ), Zoom Video Communications ( ZM -4.57% ), and Nextdoor Holdings ( KIND -0.33% ) are some of the stocks that Ark Invest bought on Wednesday. Let's see why Wood added to her existing positions in all three investments that have all shed at least two-thirds of their peak value.

Roku

Roku recently clocked in with record revenue, users, streaming hours, and average revenue per user. It hasn't been enough to impress the market. The leading streaming video hub with 60.1 million accounts is trading 73% lower than last year's all-time high. 

The platform is still growing, and so is its ability to monetize its captive audience. Average revenue per user recently clocked in at $41.03 for the past 12 months, a 43% jump from where it was a year ago. The rub here is that growth is slowing. Revenue decelerated to 33% growth in last month's financial update with expectations for the top line to rise just 25% for the current quarter. There have been supply chain challenges to grow its hardware footprint, and value investors are nervous at Roku's bent on increasing programming costs to beef up its proprietary content. Roku is still a category leader in a niche that should continue to grow.

Zoom

The rise and fall of Zoom is a tale that's been widely told, but with the stock dropping this week after a problematic quarterly report the shares are back to where they were 23 months ago. Is Zoom really nearly back to where it was just as the pandemic became a stateside calamity? 

Zoom was already a popular platform for videoconferencing, but the COVID-19 crisis lit a fuse under the stock. Company meetings, classrooms, and social gatherings turned virtual, and just about everybody learned how to use Zoom. The tide is thankfully starting to turn, but is Zoom really going away? This week's report shows decelerating growth, but positive top-line gains all the same. Revenue rose just 21% for Zoom's latest quarter. Guidance calls for a 12% year-over-year increase for the current quarter and 11% for the new fiscal year. This was a company that rattled off five consecutive quarters of triple-digit growth until this past summer. 

The stock has plummeted 73% since topping off 13 months ago. Zoom is now trading at 27 times trailing earnings, but margin pressures will eat into Zoom's profitability in the near term. Bullish catalysts may seem hard to find at this point, but Zoom isn't going away anytime soon.

Nextdoor

Last year was a rough year to go public, especially for companies that hit the market going the special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) route. Nextdoor Holdings announced last summer that it would be combining with a SPAC, and the combination was complete by early November. The stock went as high as $18.59 on its first day of trading, but it has shed 67% of its peak value as of Wednesday's close. 

Nextdoor runs a localized message board where users can socialize with their neighbors. It fashions itself as a "kind" social network, hence the ticker symbol. A rough rookie year of trading only got worse this week. Nextdoor moved lower on Wednesday after posting fresh financial results, and Wood naturally decided to be a buyer when the market was selling. Sometimes you have to be kind when the market is unkind.

Nextdoor's fourth-quarter report was mixed. Revenue rose a better-than-expected 48% to hit $59.3 million, but its loss was larger than analysts were modeling. Its guidance calls for top-line growth to decelerate in the current quarter, and the 41% year-over-year increase is slightly less than what analysts were forecasting. 

The rub with Nextdoor is that it seems fairly limited in its current incarnation. Its weekly active user base has grown by 32% to 36 million over the past year, but average revenue per user -- for the final three months of last year -- is a mere $1.65. With a rudimentary platform it will take a lot to upgrade its monetization potential. Did I just say that? I guess it was just my turn to be unkind to the "kind" community builder.
