Navajo Nation residents maintain hope, evacuate due to Wood Springs 2 fire - Farmington Daily Times

sedar.indah.link

NAZLINI, Arizona — Judy Donaldson sat in her vehicle on June 29 and watched the large smoke plume rise from the Wood Springs 2 fire, located several miles northeast of the lookout point.

"Right in that area, where the white smoke is, that's our summer camp," said Donaldson, who is a local resident.

Sitting in the passenger seat was her mother, Ruth Brenner, who used to herd sheep from the Nazlini community area to the family's camp on Defiance Plateau, where the fire is located three miles east of Wood Springs, Arizona and five miles from Sawmill, Arizona.

"I hope nothing is burning," the 86-year-old Brenner said.

"We got our fingers crossed and we're hoping," Donaldson said. "We're hoping for the hogan and corrals. I mean, that's our summer home. We've had sheep, we've had horses up there. I'm thinking of all the memories that is going up in smoke right now."

Those memories include her sister having her Kinaaldá, the traditional womanhood ceremony, at the summer camp and her son learning to wooly ride, an activity where children are placed on top of a sheep to ride.

The mother and daughter were not alone at the lookout point alongside Navajo Route 27, several residents parked there as well to watch the fire, which started on June 27.

Shifting smoke plume

A long smoke plume from the fire, which was caused by lightning, was impacting air quality in San Juan County the morning of June 30, according to the tracking map managed by the U.S. Forest Service's Interagency Wildland Fire Air Quality Response Program. An afternoon projection showed the pall shifting to the west toward Albuquerque.

The fire has grown to 5,816 acres with no containment as of June 30, according to the Southwest Area Incident Management Team 5, which took command of the fire on Tuesday.

Incident Commander Mark Bernal said on June 30 that the high wind has subsided, and it is not pushing the fire.

"We're hoping to have a very productive day today. We are getting additional crews and resources," Bernal said in his report during an online town hall meeting arranged by the Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President.

The communities of Sawmill and Fluted Rock are on high alert, with some residents receiving evacuation notices.

Along Fluted Rock Road in Kinlichee Chapter, family members and friends were helping to evacuate Nelson Benally and his large herd of sheep and goats from the family summer camp that is situated among piñon juniper and pine vegetation.

Mary Blackmountain arrived at her brother's camp on June 28 after a nephew told her that Benally refused to leave.

"I talked with him. I said, 'you can't stay here.' The ranger and the police, they came, and they told us to leave, so we started herding sheep down this way," Blackmountain said.

The family guided the sheep and goats by foot before settling at a spot to wait for additional family members to bring livestock trailers then transport the animals from the forest to the flatland in Kinlichee.

Manatt and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Release Considerations for Developing a Consumer Healt - Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP

sedar.indah.link

Paper highlights gaps in existing health data privacy protections and lays foundation for the development of new privacy framework for consumer health data in an increasingly connected digital ecosystem.

Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP, a multidisciplinary, integrated professional services firm, announced today the release of A Shared Responsibility: Protecting Consumer Health Data Privacy in an Increasingly Connected World. Manatt Health, the firm’s healthcare legal and consulting group, developed the white paper with the support of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to examine the gaps in existing health data privacy protections, the implications these gaps may have for consumers and healthcare industry stakeholders, and options for advancing a forward-looking data privacy framework.

Recent federal interoperability rules promise an unprecedented liberation of health data with app-based standards set to disrupt historical data silos, creating new pathways for the exchange of health information. At the same time, new payer and provider data-sharing requirements will equip consumers with an increasing amount of actionable information to guide their healthcare choices. However, as warned by health data privacy experts, the rapid increase in health data liquidity—while beneficial to consumers, patients and marketplace competition—is also outpacing the development of regulatory safeguards to protect the public.

“As the amount of available electronic health data continues to rapidly increase—and especially as the value of interoperable health data has been brought to the forefront by the COVID-19 pandemic—it is more critical than ever for the industry to develop a new framework that provides comprehensive privacy protections for consumers’ health information,” said Bill Bernstein, leader of Manatt Health. “Safeguards must be established in order to keep up with the collection and use of information that falls outside the bounds of current health privacy laws.”

The paper includes analysis of current health privacy laws and their limited applicability to health information not protected under HIPAA and other related laws. It also highlights serious challenges these limitations create in relation to trust, liability and transparency between companies and consumers. Lastly, it outlines a continuum of potential options to improve patient health, enhance patient experience and reduce healthcare costs through the use of digital health data, including an analysis of self-regulatory options that have been utilized in other industries, along with insights and lessons from those models that may be applicable to health data.

Given the increased attention placed on consumer privacy, the eHealth Initiative Foundation (eHI) and the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT), in a separate project funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, are collaborating on an initiative entitled Building a Consumer Privacy Framework for Health Data. This project is designed to address these current gaps in legal protections, and will be guided by a Steering Committee made up of experts and leaders representing healthcare, technology, and advocacy groups and consumers. The project will incorporate insights and analyses from the white paper released today in the Steering Committee’s work to identify preferred pathways and actionable steps to identify and recommend additional consumer health privacy protections. Not only will their proposal recommend meaningful protection for consumers with respect to the collection and use of their health information, it will also help create a standard set of protections for companies to adopt, indicating a commitment to act responsibly with respect to protecting all of their users’ data.

Summer snow blankets portions of Wood River Valley - WHSV

sedar.indah.link

KETCHUM, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) - Portions of the Wood River Valley woke up to more than 6 inches of snow on Monday morning, as the end of June looked more like a mid-winter morning.

The mountain towns within the Central and Sawtooth Mountains were a little bit too warm too see any of the white stuff fly, but once you were able to get above approximately 6,700 feet, snow started to cover the ground.

Galena Summit saw more than 6 inches of snow on Monday, an uncommon occurrence at the end of June in Idaho.
Galena Summit saw more than 6 inches of snow on Monday, an uncommon occurrence at the end of June in Idaho.(Eric Brill/KMVT)

At Galena Summit, which is approximately midway between Ketchum and Stanley, saw more than 6 inches of snow. This is at approximately 8,700 feet above sea level, and of course, the higher you are above sea level within this part of the Central and Sawtooth Mountains, the more snow you will see. Luckily, with temperatures last week as well as Saturday in the 70s for highs, the snow wasn’t able to accumulate very much on Highway 75. With that noted, the threat of snow is expected to linger around until Tuesday. Another 2-4 inches of snow will be possible, with the majority of the accumulation happening on grassy surfaces, as well as the majestic trees of the Sawtooth National Forest.

While the snow isn’t the most common thing to see in southern Idaho for late June, the amount of snow that is accumulating within this specific storm is uncommon.

Luckily, an area of high pressure is expected to move into southern Idaho, and will allow temperatures to warm back-up in this region to the upper 60s and lower 70s by the Fourth of July weekend, and make the snow an afterthought.

County names Lisa McKenzie acting recorder as long-time recorder Gene Wood retires - Lancaster Eagle Gazette

sedar.indah.link

LANCASTER - Tuesday was long-time Fairfield County Recorder Gene Wood's last day on the job. He is retiring after almost 45 years in the office and 38 years in his current position.

The county commission named Lisa McKenzie as the temporary acting recorder until the county Republican Party central committee meets to name a permanent replacement to fill Wood's unexpired term the rest of the year.

McKenzie has worked for Wood for 22 years and will run unopposed in November for his seat.

Wood said he's now ready for his new life.

"I tell everybody I'm going to do what Gene wants to do," he said. "I feel free. I feel free. I don't have to worry about alarm clocks or meetings anymore. It's exciting for me after the time I've been here. It's time for me to step down and move on and let the younger people take over the office."

The commissioners in February accepted Wood's resignation letter. They also named Wednesday as Gene Wood Day at Tuesday's meeting. Wood said he was fine emotionally until the meeting, which also had several country recorders from across the state attending in his honor.

Wood will be 75 in a few days and previously said that is one reason why he is retiring. He also said he didn't enjoy the job has much as he used to.

"The county, things have changed here," Wood said in February. "There's a lot of changes within the county, and I may not necessarily agree with everything."

Wood started his career in 1975 as deputy recorder under former recorder Rex Zollinger. He then became the county recorder in the 1982 upon Zollinger's unexpected death in the middle of his term. Zollinger was elected in 1952, meaning the county has had only two recorders in 67 years.

Wood ran in 10 elections since with three of them contested elections.

County commissioner and local Republican Party chair Jeff Fix said there was never an issue or scandal of any type during Wood's tenure.

"Gene's always been a good public servant," he said. "He's always quietly gone about doing a great job for the citizens of Fairfield County. He's never really sought any recognition or accolades or anything like that. He's the type of public servant that you hope to have as part of your county. He's done a great job and he's done it for a long time."

The county Republican Party central committee has between five and 45 days to name someone to serve as acting recorder for the remainder of year. Fix said McKenzie seems like the logical choice, but that the committee can chose anyone it wants.

McKenzie could also face a write-in challenger in November. The deadline to file for a write-in candidacy is 4 p.m. on Aug. 24.

In a related election issue, Lithopolis will have a special election on Aug. 4 on a 1/2% income tax hike.

7 Actually Attractive Furniture Pieces for Certified Car Lovers - Gear Patrol

sedar.indah.link

Your home is an extension of yourself, so if you’re a car enthusiast, you may be looking for a way to project your passion for all things automotive via your furnishings But that can be a bit tough to do…at least, if you want to do it subtly and tastefully. You may not want to go all-in with a $24,000 Lamborghini speaker or a $10,000 couch made from a 1957 Chevy, and there’s only a finite age window where a race car bed is appropriate.

Below, however, are a few car-themed conversation starters we certainly wouldn’t mind having around our homes.

Porsche Design 911 Speaker

Porsche Design built a Bluetooth speaker using the original exhaust pipe from the 911 GT3. It’s Porsche, so as you would expect, there’s a fancier version incorporating the original rear silencer for a few grand more.

Sahara Force India Limited Edition Wheel Rim Coffee Table

The Force India F1 team has become Racing Point, and will soon be Aston Martin. And you can bet that team’s livery will no longer be pink. But that means there’ll be a bit more rarity to this bit of racing history: a race-used wheel rim from the 2014 season, that has been converted into a coffee table.

Toyota Piston Clock

Toyota fandom is real — and spectacular. Now, you can celebrate it with this clock-slash-pen holder built using a real Toyota piston. It can be painted, cleaned up and polished, or left to develop a patina for a worn look. (Sadly, you can’t add the ubiquitous Toyota digital dash clock.)

Jeep CJ Tailgate Buffet Table

Repurposed barn wood is great. What could make it even better? Cabinet doors repurposed from an old Jeep CJ tailgate. This item can serve as a buffet table — or, if so inclined, a media center.

Block Wine Rack Coffee Table

One thing about old engine blocks: they’re just about the right size to be a wine rack. This one is also a coffee table.

Alfa Romeo 2.5-Liter V6 Engine Coffee Table

The Alfa Romeo GTV6 remains a legend because of its 2.5-liter V6 engine. This one no longer makes sweet internal combustion music, but it does make a fine-looking coffee table.

Picswood Toy Car Storage Shelf

The trouble with Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars is if you buy your kid one, you’ll end up buying a hundred — and those cars will end up stashed in every crevice of your house. This customizable wall storage rack will help your child (or adult) organize his or her things.

Industry officials react to closing of Fine Furniture Design - Furniture Today

sedar.indah.link

Chris Miller, president of Fine Furniture Design, chats with Furniture Today’s Tom Russell to talk about the company’s new license with Esquire magazine and rounding out the design aesthetic from its Veranda collection launched in October 2018.

HIGH POINT — News of the closure of Fine Furniture Design, formerly Fine Furniture Design & Marketing, saddened but did not surprise many in the industry who have been loyal to a brand they said for years represented some of the finest quality imported wood furniture.

On Monday the company announced it was closing its U.S.-based offices and distribution facilities, ending weeks of speculation about the future of the business, a marketing and distribution arm of Fine Furniture Group, based in Shanghai.

Formed in 2000 by the late Laurence Moh, the company produced a line of case goods built in a 2.5 million-square-foot factory in the Shanghai area. This facility, which began shipping to the U.S. around March 2002, produced case goods and upholstery as well as wood flooring over the years.

Since Moh’s death in late 2002, the company has been run by his son Michael Moh. Under his leadership, the company became known not only for its quality, but also its designs, including lines bearing European traditional forms. Over time, it also evolved into coastal styles seen in its Summer Home collection and contemporary styles seen in its Runway and Cachet collections.

Yet traditional forms were a mainstay and among some of the driving force behind the success of licensed initiatives such as Raylen Vineyards and later Biltmore and Humphrey Bogart.

“I would say that over the years — and we were there from the beginning — they were a very important source for us of high quality imported product,” said Walter Smithe, of Top 100 Company Walter E. Smithe Furniture & Design, of Itasca, Ill. “They were a great company.”

Yet he said that of late, Fine Furniture had not been as important a part of its assortment as it once was.

“We haven’t had anything that has worked for a long time, so it doesn’t surprise me,” Smithe said, noting that the company had not evolved to the types of lifestyle looks many of today’s consumers are seeking. “They haven’t been as important to us as they had been in the past. It is a shame they didn’t have more time to work it out. But the way the company was structured with that huge factory in Shanghai, and the (China) tariff situation, it was insurmountable.”

Jeff Harris, president and CEO of Top 100 Company Furnitureland South based in Jamestown, N.C., said he was saddened, yet not completely surprised to hear the news, given the challenges companies have had selling goods out of China.

“I would just say that we were very saddened to hear the news that this brand will no longer be part of our industry,” he said, noting that the store has carried Fine Furniture almost since its start and now has a 6,000 square-foot gallery devoted to the line. “In our opinion, it has been one of the greatest values in case goods we have had in our store. We are certainly going to look for other great brands and vendors that can fill that void. We have a lot of respect for Michael Moh and his family and what they have meant to this industry. They will be very much missed.”

As Harris noted, the disappearance of the line will mean a void on many upper end retailer floors. That includes Austin, Texas-based Louis Shanks Furniture, which also has carried the line since the start.

“We are very disappointed hearing they are shutting their doors,” said Mike Forwood, president. “They have been a good resource for us for a number of years and they developed some fine product. It leaves a hole in the marketplace for better end goods we are used to selling, such as Henredon and Drexel Heritage. This adds a new name to that list. I hope that at some point in time it ends.”

He said the void is particularly acute in higher end bedroom furniture and noted that Fine Furniture’s licensed Veranda assortment was one of the bestselling bedrooms in his store.

“It has been a fun line to work with,” he noted, adding that while tariffs may have raised the price a little, the line still did well, serving a niche in the marketplace.

“There are not many people chasing that game anymore,” he said of upper end goods produced overseas. “It is getting harder to find. The market has shrunk for it – unfortunately, it is not out there.”

The closure also marks the end of Fine Furniture’s Biltmore line, which first launched in April 2013.

“We have enjoyed working with everyone at Fine Furniture, and wish each of them the very best in their next careers, said Timothy Rosebrock, vice president and general manager of Biltmore Licensed Product. “Our partnership with Fine Furniture was a successful one, and included recent plans for expansion, but we understand their decision to close. We have already begun our assessment of where we will take our program in the furniture category and remain bullish about the future and power of the Biltmore brand. Biltmore is a 125-year-old cultural destination, and millions of consumers connect with the brand each year.”

Company officials including Michael Moh and Chris Miller, president, were not available to comment for this story. Those who have been informed of the closing by personal phone calls from Miller and/or their sales reps said the closing also includes the China factory and the company’s retail stores in China.

While the company achieved success with its quality and designs, observers note that it may have suffered when it came to stable leadership. Since its inception, it went through seven U.S. presidents or about one in nearly every three years.

The first was Jeff Young, a former Lexington Furniture executive who now is head of case goods and upholstery resource A.R.T. Furniture.

Young said that he was pleased to work with the company for a short two-year period, during which he was involved in helping start up the China factory with the company’s founder.

“It gave me the rare opportunity to work side by side with Larry Moh,” he said. “I was grateful for what I was able to learn being with Larry Moh those two years. It didn’t end the way we thought it would, but it was great to work with him and to see him in action.”

Report: Netherlands to double wood pellet imports in 2020 - Biomass Magazine

sedar.indah.link

The Netherlands doubled its wood pellet imports to a record 1.22 million metric tons in 2019, according to a report recently filed with the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service’s Global Agricultural Information Network. Imports are expected to double again this year based on the co-firing plans of Dutch power companies.

The report explains that the Netherlands imported more than 1 million metric tons of wood pellets in 2012. U.S. was the top supplier of pellets to the Dutch power companies at that time, accounting for 600,000 metric tons of imports.

Dutch imports of wood pellets stagnated from 2013 to 2017 due to the termination of government support for the use of woody biomass for energy generation. Subsidies resumed, however, in 2018 and 2019. As a result of those subsidies, the Dutch power sector imported 1.22 metric tons of wood pellets at a value of $232 million last year. Few of those pellets were imported from North America. Dutch power companies primarily sourced wood pellets from Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and Russia in 2018 and 2019.

Sustainability requirements are a primary factor limiting U.S. wood pellet exports to the Netherlands. The report explains that pellets must be certified at the forest level. In the U.S., biomass for pellet production is generally sourced from small forest owners who do not have a program certification.

According to the report, the Dutch government has developed a verification protocol as an alternative to certification to facilitate pellet imports. Importers, however, are often reluctant to utilize the system due to a fear that product might be determined to be non-compliant after delivery.

The Netherlands consumed an estimated 1.197 million metric tons of wood pellets in 2019, up from 614,000 metric tons in 2018. Consumption is expected to increase to 2.25 million metric tons this year. The country imported 1.223 million metric tons of wood pellets in 2019, with 130,000 metric tons of that volume coming from the U.S. Imports are expected to reach 2.5 million metric tons this year, with the U.S. supplying up to 500,000 metric tons of that volume.

A full copy of the report can be downloaded from the USDA FAS GAIN website.

Ikea using illegally sourced wood from Ukraine, campaigners say - Mongabay.com

sedar.indah.link
  • The report provides evidence that some of the beech wood used in Ikea’s flagship Terje chair and other products came from a state-run forestry enterprise in Ukraine that was violating the law.
  • Ikea’s suppliers in Ukraine harvested logs from the Velkyy Bychkiv state forestry enterprise during a “silence period” when the type of logging they were carrying out was legally prohibited.
  • Campaigners say the Forest Stewardship Council, one of the world’s largest and most influential timber certification organizations, failed to note or take action on the illegalities.

The global furniture giant Ikea used illegal timber from Ukraine in its supply chain and one of the world’s preeminent forestry certification organizations failed to stop it from happening, a new report says.

The report, published last week by the U.K.-based environmental watchdog Earthsight, accuses Ikea of sourcing manufactured products — including its flagship Terje folding chair — from suppliers that have used logs that were felled illegally in Ukraine.

“In this case, VGSM, the company that was supplying these chairs and chair parts to Ikea is cutting some of the trees itself, but it’s doing so under illegally issued licenses issued by the State Forestry Enterprise that controls the forest,” said Sam Lawson, director of Earthsight.

Like in other former Soviet bloc countries, forest regions marked for logging in Ukraine are managed by state-run enterprises. Most of these “state forestry enterprises” are controlled by Ukraine’s State Agency of Forestry Resources, including one in Velkyy Bychkiv, a remote region in western Ukraine near the Romanian border.

It’s in this region where campaigners say that state authorities allowed a company called VGSM, one of Ikea’s suppliers, to cut down beech trees during a “silence period” between April and mid-June, when Ukrainian law mandates a halt on certain forms of logging during the critical breeding period for lynx and other species.

According to the report, those logs were also felled under a “sanitary felling” permit, a widely abused loophole in Ukranian forestry that allows large numbers of trees to be cut down and sold provided they were already damaged by disease or insect infestation. These permits have become a loophole for industrial logging and are often issued even when the felled trees show little or no sign of degradation.

Some of the logs harvested in Velkyy Bychkiv were processed into furniture for Ikea right on-site at VGSM’s nearby lumber yard. Others were sent across the border to Romania, where another of Ikea’s partners, a Romanian company called Plimob, turned them into the Terje as well as other chairs.

In an email to Mongabay, Ikea responded to Earthsight’s report by saying that it “does not accept illegally logged wood in our products.”

“When we encounter any information that suggests wood which does not meet our requirements has entered, or is at risk of entering our supply chain, we take immediate action. This includes the termination of suppliers’ contracts,” the statement added.

Well-worn terrain for Ukraine

The allegations against Ikea are far from the first time that campaigners have taken aim at Ukraine’s management of its forests. In 2018, Earthsight released a report that accused the Ukranian government of widespread corruption by officials responsible for overseeing logging, with the subsequent release of an investigation by the European Union backing up many of the group’s claims.

The report caused a scandal in Ukraine, with then-Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman saying, “the facts are terrible,” and ordering a crackdown on illegal activities by forestry officials. While that crackdown initially led to a sharp drop in the volume of illegal timber exports leaving Ukraine, since then reform efforts have stalled.

Local environmental activists say that a key reason why has to do with the way Ukraine’s forests are managed. The government agency tasked with overseeing forestry — the State Agency of Forestry Resources, or SAFR — simultaneously collects profits from forests it controls while also being responsible for preventing illegal logging in those forests.

According to Yehor Hrynyk, a campaigner with the Ukranian Nature Conservation Group, an environmental organization that contributed to Earthsight’s report, this setup breeds corruption.

“The state forestry enterprises are a direct structure within the state forestry agency. They do monitoring as well as have control, and herein lies the big conflict of interest because they’re interested mostly in profit-making and therefore all the corruption and illegalities appear,” he said.

In 2018, inspectors from Ukraine’s State Environmental Inspectorate visited the Velkyy Bychkiv state forestry enterprise and noted that it was illegally granting logging permits during the spring silence period. But there was no notable follow-up by authorities, and in 2019 and 2020 the practice continued.

“All they could do is fine them with a penalty of $20,” Hrynyk said. “They actually didn’t do that, but even if they did, come on. Twenty dollars, it’s nonsense.”

Since the release of Earthsight’s report, Ukranian authorities say they’ve opened criminal proceedings against the Velkyy Bychkiv state forestry enterprise.

The fox guarding the forest

In response to the report, Ikea said it would be asking the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) to carry out an audit of its supply chain to locate any further illegalities.

But Lawson says that a big part of the reason why Ikea was profiting from illegal timber from Ukraine is because FSC had failed to catch the problem and act on it in the first place.

“We’re concerned that their investigation will not be broad enough in scope and it won’t be truly independent,” he said.

Created in 1993 as a mechanism for environmental activists to work with the logging and wood manufacturing industries to cut down on unsustainable and illegal logging, FSC has since become one of the world’s largest timber certification organizations. The FSC logo appears on wood products and corporate websites across the globe, indicating that FSC has given its stamp of approval to a company’s operations or its ability to sort through whether the timber in its supply chain comes from legal or illegal sources. FSC charges companies for this certification, which allows those companies to slap a large markup on the timber products they sell to consumers.

FSC has repeatedly come under fire by environmental activists, who say the organization is acting as a de facto arm of industry and “greenwashing” timber on the global market. These critics say that FSC’s fee structure creates an inherent conflict of interest, with most of its financing coming from corporations and foresters who pay to have their supply chains certified.

“FSC certifying bodies are profit-making companies that compete for business from logging companies to audit them,” Lawson said. “And there is a natural tendency towards a race to the bottom. Whoever is the least strict is more likely to get business.”

In 2018, Greenpeace, one of FSC’s founding members, announced that it was ending its membership, citing frustration with FSC’s lack of transparency and the influence of a bloc of industry players in preventing tighter regulations on logging practices.

According to the Earthsight report, VGSM and Plimob both hold FSC “chain of custody” certificates, and the logs that were illegally felled in Velkyy Bychkiv during the silence period were stamped with FSC’s seal of approval. After Ukrainian officials noted the illegalities in 2018, a subsequent visit by FSC-contracted auditors to the Velkyy Bychkiv state forestry enterprise did not include any follow-up investigation of those findings or a withdrawal of certification for any of the companies implicated in them.

In an email to Mongabay, FSC said it had terminated 29 certificates in Ukraine between 2019 and 2020, and that its interpretation of the laws related to sanitary felling and the silence period differed from Earthsight’s.

“The logging carried out by Velyky Bychkiw was performed outside of the area designated for the silence period. Therefore, according to FSC standards, the company was not violating the law and was in compliance with FSC standards,” wrote Kim Carstensen, the FSC director-general.

But Hrynyk says FSC’s credibility is waning in Ukraine, and if it doesn’t disentangle itself from the influence of logging industry interests it risks becoming irrelevant.

“If we don’t put pressure on FSC now I think it’s doomed,” he said. “Because all the problems I know from the global perspective as well as inside Ukraine say that FSC is not working at all.”

For Lawson, the illegalities uncovered at Velkyy Bychkiv imply a bigger and broader problem for both Ikea as well as FSC.

“As we make clear in the report, there is high risk wood throughout Ikea’s supply chain including from elsewhere in the Ukraine and Russia as well,” he said.

“And all that wood’s legality and sustainability is being guaranteed by the same flawed FSC and Ikea systems. So they need to go far beyond just an investigation that looks at the particular suppliers of these chairs.”

Watson Launches New Mobile Storage For Its C9 Furniture System - PRNewswire

sedar.indah.link

"Even before COVID-19, Watson's C9 furniture system was designed to create additional elbow room at the workstation, thanks to our patent-pending power rail which creates the generous distance now required," said Lucas Pearl, VP of Product Development at Watson. "Beyond the power rail, we are introducing Olli, the personal work trolley, which brings supercharged functionality to the workstation. In addition to offering secure storage, this transforming trolley becomes a side table useful as a space buffer to enhance social distancing in the office."

Olli brings storage from under the desk out into the open. As the work companion and home to personal gear, Olli introduces rich functionality to mobile storage. As its steel work tray lifts up and out, Olli transforms into a side table reaching the desk surface in one fluid motion. Other useful features include a hidden tray box, handy bag hook, soft textile seat, and tow handle -- allowing coworkers to bring Olli into huddles, as both seat and laptop table, while staying safely apart.

Olli's clean lines and friendly curves are the result of masterful design and steel craftsmanship. Ethan Pearl, Watson's award-winning industrial designer, is responsible for Olli's thoughtful design. Beyond the physical product, Olli presents an opportunity for a harmonious color and textile personality with a wide array of Watson palettes.

Watson's new Olli, the work trolley will be ready to order on August 3. For more information visit: https://www.watsonfurniture.com/products/c9-storage

Blog: Are appointments-at-scale in furniture's future? - Furniture Today

sedar.indah.link

The recent High Point pop-up event, intended as a temporary solution to a disrupted market season, could prove instructive as the industry continues adjusting to the realities of COVID-19. It’s become increasingly clear that the pandemic’s impact on business will prove more lasting than the three to four months most people first envisioned back in March, and it seems likely that buyer and seller interactions throughout the supply chain will need to evolve as a result.

There were a few noteworthy developments arising at the “mini-market,” as it’s been colloquially dubbed. First, it doesn’t matter what dates you set or suggest, some guests will always arrive early. While the ostensible dates for showroom appointments were June 16-18, as always, a number of exhibitors reported having retailers arrive ahead of that schedule.

Some things never change.

One thing that did change and could be a harbinger of the future was the appointment-only format aimed at limiting the number of people in each showroom at any given time. This event’s limited attendance relative to an actual market made social distancing relatively easy, although some major accounts took this a step farther requesting exclusive showroom access.

It also appears that some companies prior to and after the pop-up event have been and will be utilizing their showrooms for individual retailer appointments. Moving into the fall High Point Market season, it will be worth watching to see how showrooms are utilized to manage retailer interactions, particularly if infection numbers continue to rise and key accounts choose to limit market travel.

For those with a small number of accounts or with easy year-round access to their showroom, the appointment-only model may prove a viable complement to the traditional market schedule. However, scaling that model to accommodate larger numbers of dealers and/or shorter market windows could prove disruptive to the traditional product development and marketing cadence. While there remain a large number of unknown variables, the appointment-at-scale model bears watching.

It’s also worth watching the appointment-at-scale evolution at retail as furniture dealers look to avoid another round of shut-downs and adapt to a consumer base, at least part of which, has become more cautious about venturing into stores.

While some stores were shut-down completely, others — along with the design business— were able to maintain some cash flow and customer interaction utilizing an appointment-shopping model. The ability to execute this at scale could prove even more critical in the weeks and months ahead should the virus continue its spread or see a second wave.

While it currently seems unlikely that a full shutdown like we saw in March and April will be reinstituted, it doesn’t seem a stretch to imagine limitations on building occupancy and traffic flow. In such a selling environment, the ability to generate appointment velocity and manage the flow in a way that generates meaningful sales volume could be an important element of retailer success in the months ahead.

The environment in which the industry operates continues to evolve, as do the strategies it will take to survive. Finding a strategy to deal with buyers (retail or consumer) in a more individualized but still scalable way could prove one of the more important determinants of success as we move forward.

After 7 decades, McBride Furniture Village permanently closing - Bellefontaine Examiner

sedar.indah.link

Store conducts ‘going out of business’ sale starting this week

It is time for 91-year-old Clifford “Mick” McBride to go fishing, read and relax. His family’s longtime business, McBride Furniture Village, has offered unique, high-end furniture to loyal clients in the area for over seven decades.

This historic 73-year-old store at 310 Mad River St., Forest, is offering to the public an opportunity to purchase quality furniture during a final event at drastically reduced prices. Everything must go, including the real estate, which includes at least seven properties, representatives said.

McBride Furniture Village will commence with the “store closing” sales event this week, and new hours for this sale are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

In 1946, Mr. McBride married the former Marcile Geary, and one year later, they opened a furniture store on the main level of their Dunkirk home. Mick was 17 and Marcile was 18.

In 1951, the couple moved the store to Forest. They had no idea the store would become a “village” that attracted clients from a 100-mile radius. They also shipped furniture to loyal clients in the United Kingdom.

At that time, the main advertising tools included newspapers, radio and television in the surrounding towns and villages.

During those early days, they were turned down by a few banks for a loan to get started. Had it not been for Ralph and Olive McElroy granting them a loan, the couple may have given up on their dream of owning their own business. Mick and Marcile are creative individuals and didn’t want to settle for an ordinary furniture store.

Their four children all worked in the business at one time or another. Most recently, daughter Jody (McBride) Shields retired after being an integral part of the business for over 45 years.

“Being knowledgeable of our products and knowing our clientele has been key to our success,” she said. “Also, it’s about what the client wants without pressure.”

“Beyond owning our own business, the most rewarding part has been meeting and getting to know so many people. It has been a joy,” her father added.

In their spare time, the McBrides enjoyed traveling until recent health issues. They still enjoy family events and worshipping with their neighbors at their church.

“Life has been good and we have been blessed. Most importantly, we wish to thank all of our family, friends, clients and our entire community for their friendship, loyalty, and support over the years,” Mr. and Mrs. McBride said.

Regarding the final sale, representatives said additional markdowns are off the lowest price and some upholstered furniture can be special ordered. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted

All items are available for pick up, but a limited delivery service will be offered at a fee by local movers.

For additional details and special deals, visit www.mcbridefurniture.com or the business’ Facebook page.
