Where to buy vintage and antique furniture online | - Homes & Gardens

sedar.indah.link

While for me nothing quite beats the thrill of thrifting and shopping for vintage pieces in person, I have recently got very into scrolling for antique and retro gems online. I saw designer Nate Berkus post on his Instagram about how he often scrolls auction houses' websites and hunts for vintage pieces online to relax, and over the holidays I found myself doing the same.

I have been really trying to only buy pieces for my home that are 'timeless'. And by timeless, I don't necessarily mean classic, or super traditional, just pieces that I personally love and therefore will hopefully stand the test of time, and transcend interior design trends

The great thing about shopping for vintage pieces online is you don't have to do too much research on where to find the good stuff, no driving out to the country, or lugging pieces home. If you have your search terms down and know where to look, thrifting online is actually far easier and less effort.

But where are the best places to shop vintage online? I asked the experts for their go-to and what they look out for when decorating with vintage too.

Where to buy vintage furniture online

The best places to buy vintage decor and furniture online does depend on what you are after, and actually your shopping style. Some sites are super easy to use and have great search and filter options, others have great stuff, it just takes a bit more digging and patience.

The key to buying antiques online is to know what you are looking for, or at least have an idea of the styles you like as a lot of sites will be able to filter by era or interior design style. There are pros and cons to all of these stores, but the key is they have the best picks and they come recommended by designers too.

1. 1stDibs

1stDibs is one of my personal favorites, not just for shopping but also for inspiration. There's lots of useful info over there to help you with your search and find an interior design style you like. It's not one for a bargain, but it is great for finding things with ease and there's so much stock on there.

'We source many vintage and antique pieces for homes with the intention of giving personality and depth to an interior that can’t always be found with a new piece. 1stDibs is a go-to for us,' says founder of Folding Chair Design, Jennifer Walters. 'Their site is so easy to navigate in terms of filters. Finding exactly what we need in the search is key when looking for several specific, or period pieces!'

Bethany Adams agrees, 'I have several go-to's for vintage and antique pieces including 1stdibs.com, Chairish.com, LiveAuctioneers.com, and EBTH.com.'

'But my secret to online shopping success is constantly checking these sights (some as often as daily!) and setting up alerts for designers or items I'm particularly interested in. But I've found many a treasure that was unidentified by the auctioneer, but I knew to be a famous, valuable piece, hence the regular scrolling.'

2. Chairish

Chairish is very similar to 1stDibs in that it's very user-friendly. You can shop by style, piece, brand, etc. and there's lots of content on the site too to help you shop and style your pieces. I like the collaborations they do with designers, when I am feeling lazy I often look to this section as a simple source of inspiration for decorating with antiques.

Many of the designers I spoke with use Charish, designer Jennifer Davis explained, 'Navigating through Facebook Marketplace allows me to tap into local sellers but when seeking authenticated, high-quality vintage items, I frequently explore 1stDibs or Chairish. 1st Dibs offers higher-end pieces with negotiable prices, while Chairish has a wider price range catering to different budgets.'

Jennifer Davis
Jennifer Davis

Jennifer fell in love with design at a young age and has been working in the industry for over 25 years. She has developed an eye for detail and a talent for creating timeless designs. Jennifer offers a balance of creativity and forward-thinking with a structured, organized, and detailed mentality. Jennifer is driven by her deep passion for design while curating an exceptional client journey, ensuring pure delight from the very beginning to the end.

3. Etsy

'As an interior designer, my quest for timeless pieces often leads me to diverse online platforms known for their unique offerings in vintage and antique décor,' continues Jennifer. 'Etsy stands as a favorite, as it has vendors from all over the world selling on the platform.  I find this website incredibly user-friendly, especially with its excellent suggestions for similar products. It's my go-to for antique accessories, particularly French confit jars or African mud pots.'

Etsy is great for shopping vintage decor and furniture online, and you can find some bargains. You have to be pretty clued up on what you are looking for, the search on Etsy is very broad, but once you get those key terms you'll pull plenty up to browse through.

4. LiveAuctioneers and Invaluable

'Interior designers often find antique treasures in a variety of locations. They frequent auctions and estate sales, where pieces with history and character can be found. 1stDibs and Chairish are the most popular online resources, but high fees can sometimes put the prices of items over the limit,' explains Kati Curtis

'Online auctions like LiveAuctioneers and Invaluable are also great resources, and you can set alerts to look for specific items you might need. Local antique shops and trade fairs also serve as potential goldmines for unique items.'

'For more budget options, online platforms such as eBay, Etsy, and specialized antique portals provide an expansive digital marketplace for budget-friendly vintage finds. Furthermore, designers even explore salvage yards and estate sales, where with a keen eye, one can unearth beautiful objects with a past life. No matter the source, each piece is chosen with consideration for its ability to add richness and depth to a design concept.' she adds.

Kati Curtis

Kati Curtis

Kati Curtis is the founder of Kati Curtis Design, an design firm based in New York City specializing in classic design with a global influence. Kati founded the studio in 2005 after 12 years of working with international architecture and engineering firms.

5. Vinterior

'As a studio, we love to mix old and new decor in interior projects, be it vintage furniture, objét or lighting. Vintage pieces have a richness and a depth that can’t quite be matched and of course buying vintage is a more sustainable design choice.' explains Alessio Nardi, Founder, A-nrd Studio.

'We source a lot of the Murano and Art Deco lighting which we specify for projects from Vinterior. It’s a great resource for finding one-of-a-kind pieces from anywhere in the world.'

Vinterior is very polished, no having to really dig, it's just like shopping at any online homeware store. You can shop by type, style, room, creator, or period. It's a UK-based site, but it's individual sellers, and most ship outside of the UK.

All of these sites are ideal for shopping vintage pieces online. It has been briefly mentioned, but I would also like to throw in Facebook Marketplace. It's obviously a bit of a minefield, but I have found some great pieces on there and have a few sellers who I buy off regularly who use it as a way to sell stock in between antique fairs. If you are after something very specific or it's a bigger investment, always arrange to see the piece before you agree to buy.

Created in collaboration with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation – the primary custodians of the American architect's archive – the reissued desks and office chairs were sized up to fit modern body proportions.

American company Steelcase based the designs closely on the original, only increasing the size and making minor tweaks to modernise their functionality.

The third most popular furniture piece with designers was High Bar by Alter Interiors, which received nine per cent of the vote.

The purpose-built cannabis cabinet was designed with a dedicated bong shelf and a pull-out rolling tray.

sedar.indah.link

The furniture of a home is what truly makes or breaks it. When you pick the right kind of furniture design, you build the essence and soul of a home. And it is essential that the soul of our home reflects our soul. Hence, you need to pick furniture designs that truly and authentically represent your personality, while bringing out the best in your home. And, we’ve curated a collection of innovative, functional, and sophisticated furniture designs that we feel will make an excellent addition to your home. These are our top furniture picks from 2023 – enjoy!

1. The Time Table

This desk is a unique and innovative one, as it makes the passing of time visible and tangible, enabling people to maintain a personal relationship with time as they invest in activities, projects, and other work.

Why is it noteworthy?

The desk is equipped with a sub-table that moves up and down, and it changes its elevation as time passes, before simply returning to its base state at the lowest point. It is time as a reverse hourglass, in which the movement of time is displayed visually.

What we like

  • Enables users to measure, log, and be aware of how much time they’re spending there

What we dislike

  • The desk could also become a bit distracting, especially for those who have trouble concentrating

2. Flow Wall Desk

Dubbed the Flow Wall Desk, this excellent piece of office furniture is designed for offices with space constraints. It is functional and decorative, while also following a sustainable and simple design ideology. When propped against your wall, it looks like an exceptional piece of art, one that instantly catches your attention!

Why is it noteworthy?

When the Flow Wall Desk is stored and folded up it looks like an art piece on your wall owing to its minimalist and intriguing shape. However, when you unfold it, it transforms into a ‘spiraling caterpillar’ from a flat canvas, functioning as a desk where you work, read, and write.

What we like

  • Has a convenient flatpack form that is easy to store away
  • Multifunctional furniture design

What we dislike

  • Folding and unfolding the desk whenever you need to use it means we can’t have a constant, which could be inconvenient for some users

3. Tokyo

Called Tokyo, this ingenious multifunctional design functions as a shoe rack and a bench. It is the combination of two furniture pieces in the form of one individual furniture design.

Why is it noteworthy?

Tokyo is a unique and special furniture piece. It features a side leg that gently and seamlessly curves, softly embracing the cushion to build a top tray for daily essentials. It serves as a cozy and neat spot to store your souvenirs and knick-knacks.

What we like

  • Equipped with a bottom shelf that functions as a nifty storage space

What we dislike

  • It’s a conceptual design, so we’re not sure how functional it will be in reality

4. Bookgroove

This unique furniture design is truly one-of-a-kind as it functions as a bookrack and a table. It has a seamless and well-crafted body that makes it an ideal fit for contemporary homes. Dubbed the Bookgroove, it is a conceptual design that deserves to be converted into a real one.

Why is it noteworthy?

The Bookgrove is circular at first glance, but as you look closer you see it has a J-shaped carving on one side that can accommodate multiple books. It is an unusual way to store books, as they follow the shape of the built-in shelf on the side table.

What we like

  • The top section can accommodate a cup of coffee or a glass of wine
  • It’s a fun + unique way to store your favorite books

What we dislike

  • The books placed at the bottom of the curve can get damaged over time because of the way they are placed
  • Difficult to access books when you want to read them

5. Snowhouse Sofa

Called the Snowhouse Sofa, this interesting furniture is designed for pets and humans alike. If a wooden sofa experienced some snow and was coated with it, it would look like the Snowhouse Sofa!

Why is it noteworthy?

The wooden sofa is covered with cushy white cushions that give it the picturesque impression of fallen snow. The edges of the sofa are rounded, which adds a depth of softness and elegance to the furniture piece. The ends of the sofa are hollow, and marked with little spaces to accommodate books, magazines, and other miscellaneous items.

What we like

  • The upper section functions as a passage for your cats
  • Features smart storage spaces

What we dislike

  • The Snowhouse Sofa is currently a concept, so we don’t know how the actual product will turn out to be

6. Plot Twist Bookshelf

PLOT TWIST Bookshelves PLOT TWIST Bookshelf Concept

Designed by Deniz Aktay, the Plot Twist Bookshelf features four separate twisted wooden elements that are connected to one another, building a stable and innovative form. The unconventional and mesmerizing design truly captures whoever looks at it!

Why is it noteworthy?

The bookshelf’s design can be accessed from every side. It is oddly satisfying and features curves that are seen in the designer’s other projects. Most of the furniture designs undergo bending and twisting like Aktay’s Wavelet, Tie Stool, and the Pet Table.

What we like

  • Similarly sized books can be easily arranged for a clutter-free look
  • Stable design that stands on its own

What we dislike

  • Space-consuming design, not well-suited for homes with space constraints

7. Alada Folding Desk

The Alada Folding Desk is a nifty and convenient space-saving desk that doubles up as an adorable decorative shelf. You can transform the desk into a display shelf in seconds, and it can hold your favorite souvenirs and potted plants.

Why is it noteworthy?

The Alada desk was designed to cater to the ever-growing need for smart and flexible desk designs for working at home. It is essential to have a transformative and space-saving workspace at home – one that can be stored away when the day ends!

What we like

  • Equipped with hidden storage spaces when folded up

What we dislike

  • Not the best option for people who prefer large and elaborate desks

8. Refold

Dubbed Refold, this foldable desk is made using cardboard. It uses a few pieces that can be folded down into a relatively thin rectangle that can be carried around with you and used as either a standing or sitting desk.

Why is it noteworthy?

The Refold is a sustainable and efficient option for those who want to set up a desk outdoors. It can be used indoors, to function as a space-saving desk that can be assembled and disassembled within a few minutes, or to offer a unique aesthetic.

What we like

  • Sustainable and flexible design

What we dislike

  • Will be difficult to carry a large canvas with you everywhere, and you may get funny looks from people

9. FTP Desk

This unique table design concept functions as a multi-purpose setup that can transform into something like a puzzle game, wherein different pieces can be fit into different places, depending on what is the needed functionality for the furniture design.

Why is it noteworthy?

Features an orange circle that can be moved around and away from the rest of the table. Moving this shape around and changing its position becomes both a symbol and a ritual that can help your mind shift to a different kind of activity, whichever one you decide to associate with its position.

What we like

  • Modular and shape-changing design that can be used for multiple functionalities

What we dislike

  • Shifting the various modules can be a major inconvenience for those who prefer one steady furniture piece

10. KNOT Stool

Called the KNOT Stool, this uniquely designed stool is flat all around and is made up of various layers of wood, which provides the stool with a raw and brutalist aesthetic.

Why is it noteworthy?

The three wooden pieces can be painted in the same or different colors. The decorative webbing strap that wraps around the top of the stool’s legs can also come in complementing or contrasting colors, not to mention being made of different materials.

What we like

  • Adds a whimsical + fun element to your interiors
  • Clean, minimal, and compact design

What we dislike

  • Seems to be designed more for viewing rather than sitting

Bedroom set that launched a furniture empire returns to its southern Minnesota roots - Star Tribune

sedar.indah.link

Driving nearly 100 miles with a 70-year-old, hand-carved bedroom set in his truck was a nerve-racking experience for Michael Tuohy.

The four-poster bed frame and two dressers had been the first furniture commission for his grandfather back in 1953. It was a simple transaction with the buyer, Leon Joyce of Rochester.

But for Joseph Tuohy, a Chatfield, Minn., man who had been woodcarving since he was a teenager, the deal launched what would become today's international, multimillion-dollar furniture manufacturer.

When Joseph's grandson Michael Tuohy, an executive with Tuohy Furniture, recently posted pictures of the dressers on the company's history page, he received a call from Ann Christiansen of Golden Valley, one of Leon Joyce's daughters.

Turns out that the Joyce family had kept all the pieces of that first bedroom set together and taken good care of them. Christiansen said she wanted to see the bed frame and dressers displayed where they belonged — at Tuohy Furniture's corporate headquarters in Chatfield, a city of 3,000 southeast of Rochester, where the Tuohy family has lived for more than five generations. So her family decided to give the furniture back to the company.

Having the pieces on display at the corporate office is a great reminder of what small beginnings can grow into with hard work and a little bit of luck, Touhy said. "Over time, you expect things to move through a family and wind up forgotten, or gone," he said.

After their parents died, Christiansen and her sister, Bernie Joyce of Eagan, committed to taking care of the bedroom set and planned to pass it between themselves every 10 years. But after seeing the work that went into moving it to Bernie's house, Christiansen this year decided to see if the Tuohys would be interested in displaying the pieces instead.

The sisters theorized that their dad had surprised their mother with the hand-carved furniture, just days before the eldest sister's marriage. Amid the pre-wedding chaos, Christiansen said they "all remember this bedroom set being moved in. … It was almost a nightmare."

The Joyce and Tuohy families met each other when Joseph Tuohy's sister married Leon Joyce's brother, Christiansen said. At the time, Tuohy was the go-to woodworker in the area for church furniture, she said.

When the Joyces learned that Tuohy was getting serious about the business of woodworking, Christiansen said, they gave him a "financial boost" to get started and commissioned him to make the three-piece bedroom set.

"My mom and dad were understated people in an awful lot of ways," Christiansen said, but she heard them express nothing but admiration for Joseph Tuohy and his work. She was told it took 14 days to carve one of the bed posts.

Joseph's son Mike went on to take over the company from his dad, expanding it into markets in New York, Chicago and Washington, D.C. Today, Tuohy Furniture manufactures office desks, conference tables and chairs under the leadership of Mike's sons, CEO Daniel and COO Michael.

Last month, Michael Tuohy and two employees carefully disassembled the furniture pieces and loaded them into a truck for the journey from Eagan to Chatfield. To Christiansen, it felt like "letting go of a lot of my family, even though my parents have both died a long time ago."

Tuohy had asked his father, Mike, now 86, about the bedroom set after posting the pictures on the company website. Mike had helped carve the pieces as a teenager.

After moving the pieces into the company's front office, Michael Tuohy invited his dad to take a look. "He just stopped and stared at it," he said, and walked his son through every detail and carving.

"I saw the memories flow back," Michael Tuohy said.

The elegant, yet liveable aesthetic of the Singapore-born designer Gabriel Tan takes a new shape with a duet of furniture designs, created in partnership with Herman Miller. The ‘Luva’ modular sofa is named after the Portuguese word for ‘glove’, and the ‘Cyclade’ coffee tables is a series of three tables that pay homage to the supercontinent of Pangea, with island-like forms that come together or flow apart seamlessly. ‘When a design is successful, different people can read it in different ways,’ Tan says. ‘Depending on where you’re from, you can interpret and relate to these designs in a totally different way from somebody else across the world.’

As part of London Design Festival 2023 designer Andu Masebo presented the results of disassembling a 1998 Alfa Romeo 145 Cloverleaf – not ULEZ-compliant – turned into a series of furniture pieces. A nightlight, created using car engine parts that cast curious shadows, responds to the life story of the car’s first owner. 'It was a lady who lost her husband while she had the car, but then went on to have an adventurous life, going to Mount Everest and Antarctica,' Masebo says. 'After her husband died, she felt his presence, telling her that she’s going to be OK.' The designer chose a nightlight as a symbol of comforting presence in dark times. 'I’m always making quite simple objects, that sometimes resonate with deep stories,' he adds.

03. Vincent Van Duysen ‘inspired by modernism’ for Molteni & C’s outdoor furniture debut

Molteni & C made its outdoor furniture debut with two complementary collections by Vincent Van Duysen, celebrating our connection to nature and a refined approach to the home. Giulia Molteni, Molteni Group’s chief marketing officer, sees this as a natural progression for the brand. ‘Nature is an integral part of our life,’ she says. ‘It’s a connection that aims at rediscovering seasons, colours and the pleasure of the outdoors.’

The new offering encompasses two collections: Landmark, featuring sinuous seating based on an unrealised 1994 design by Luca Meda (who served as creative director for the company from 1968 until his death in 1998), and Timeout, an aluminium furniture range that expresses Van Duysen’s affinity with modernism. The outdoor catalogue also pays tribute to design masters, past and present, who have contributed to Molteni’s history, including Gio Ponti, Ron Gilad and Foster + Partners, whose ‘Arc’ table from 2010 has been reissued in a new outdoor edition as part of the launch.

Karl Lagerfeld Maison, the fashion brand’s new interior branch, makes its debut during Milan Design Week 2023, with an inaugural collection created in collaboration with interior designer Matteo Nunziati. The launch comprises four collections, each named after Karl Lagerfeld’s favourite areas of Paris:  ‘Saint Germain’ and ‘Saint Guillaume’ include living areas and bedroom furniture, ‘Quai Voltaire’ is dedicated to the kitchen, and ‘Rue de l’Université’ is a lighting collection.

The collections are directly inspired by Lagerfeld’s own approach to interiors. His passion for design was evident in every space he put together; his highly researched and refined interiors combined classic and historical design with contemporary pieces. ‘He was not a collector, he was more someone that was filling a house and his brain with an idea of style,’ says Caroline Lebar, the brand’s SVP of Image and Communications, who worked alongside Lagerfeld for nearly four decades. ‘What was special about Karl was that as soon as he was focusing on a period or style, he would become an expert.’

In a true testament to good design, Knoll reissued two of Florence Knoll’s furniture designs, which have been out of production since 1968. ‘Model 31’, a lounge chair, and ‘Model 33’, a small sofa, were brought out of the archives in tribute to Florence Knoll’s legacy as a pioneering architect, interior designer, furniture designer and an all-round American design legend. Not only do these two designs speak to the revolutionary impact she had on modern interiors, they attest to her forward-thinking vision for having simple, efficient forms that are easily adaptable to any space – even almost 70 years later.

First released in 1954, ‘Model 31’ and ‘Model 33’ showcase Florence Knoll’s astute attention to detail and form. ‘These designs feel totally relevant today,’ says Jonathan Olivares, senior vice president of design at Knoll. ‘They are at home in the hospitality environments of our time, and they serve as geometric vehicles for textiles.’

06. Ozwald Boateng reimagines Poltrona Frau classics

Ozwald Boateng Poltrona Frau

Ozwald Boateng and Poltrona Frau unveiled ‘Culture and Craft’, a collaboration defined by the Savile Row designer’s interpretations of the Italian furniture company’s classics. A glimpse into a wider collection that will expand in the future, it include the ‘Chester’ sofa, a 1912 design conceived by the company's founder and inspired by Edwardian Chesterfields, and the ‘Vanity Fair’ chair, from 1984, both adorned with distinctive patterns developed by the designer.

Boateng enriched the classic furniture designs by embossing his signature ‘Tribal’ print in Frau leather. A pattern referencing traditional Kente Cloth Motifs, it becomes both a subtle decoration and a powerful aesthetic exercise once placed on the designs. The collection merges Poltrona Frau’s longstanding expertise with handcrafting techniques and furniture construction with Boateng’s distinctive aesthetic and spirit. Subtle yet vivid in its execution, the pattern is declined in a vibrant series of shades that reflect the designer’s work, including red, yellow, purple, blue, green and black.

07. Flexform’s ‘Supermax’ sofa is a contemporary scene stealer

Flexform Supermax sofa photographed at Milan’s Teatro Continuo

When Italian designer Antonio Citterio conceived the now-iconic ‘Max’ sofa for Flexform back in 1983, it was the first time he had incorporated organic forms into a more traditional structure. The sofa’s sculptural design is defined by a kidney bean-shaped seating platform resting on a tubular frame, with an off-centre cylindrical backrest. It acquired legendary status after Flexform released a series of images of a version with a striped backrest at the base of the spiral staircase at Milan’s Triennale. Photographed by Gabriele Basilico, under the art direction of Natalia Corbetta, the sofa appeared to be both in harmony and in contrast with the architecture.

Citterio and Flexform recently joined forces to revisit the idea of the ‘Max’, conceiving the ‘Supermax’ sofa as a contemporary interpretation of the original 1983 version. ‘It started with us planning an exhibition to showcase photographs of Flexform’s products,’ recalls Citterio. ‘Looking through the materials, we asked ourselves, why not launch “Max” again?’

For the reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris, set for late 2024, French designer Guillaume Bardet created a series of liturgical objects and furniture. The Gothic cathedral was partly destroyed by a fire in April 2019, which resulted in the collapsing of its roof. The renovation has involved carefully restoring the remains, while reproducing its Gothic architectural details as well as recreating the spire that was added in the 19th century by architect Eugene Viollet-le-Duc. Bardet, part of Paris' Galerie Kreo's roster and whose work is defined by a sinuous minimalism, was chosen by the Archbishop of Paris during a long and rigorous process.

The designer has been tasked with creating an altar, lectern, cathedra with seats, tabernacle, and baptistery, which he developed in bronze and favouring simple forms that exude a graceful approach that is guided by timelessness.
