A new furniture store has opened in the Mechanicsburg area.

Regency Furniture has opened in the former space of Wolf Furniture at Gateway Square at 75 Gateway Drive in Hampden Township.

The store opened at the shopping center earlier this month and is open from 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Sunday.

The company was founded in 1999 and has 14 locations in Pennsylvania, Virginia and Maryland.

Corporate officials couldn’t be reached for comment.

Michigan-based Art Van Furniture, the owner of Wolf Furniture filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on March 8. On April 7, the company’s bankruptcy cases were converted to liquidation cases under Chapter 7 of the Bankruptcy Code. Under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, Chapter 7 may be used by businesses or individuals. A portion of the debtors assets is liquidated and distributed among creditors by a trustee to satisfy debts. Art Van Furniture acquired Wolf Furniture in 2017 as well as Pennsylvania-based Levin Furniture. Another former Wolf Furniture store in the Harrisburg area on Lindle Road in Swatara Township closes at 8 p.m. Monday (today).

The new Regency Furniture store is not the only furniture store that has opened in Hampden Township. Ashley HomeStore has opened in the former Dick’s Sporting Goods store at 5950 Carlisle Pike. The store is relocating from 6484 Carlisle Pike in Silver Spring Township. Dick’s Sporting Goods previously relocated to the Capital City Mall in Lower Allen Township.

Regency Furniture isn’t the only new tenant at Gateway Square. Code Ninjas, a kids coding franchise opened on Oct. 12 and Jubilee Cake Studio opened this month at the shopping center. The “decorate it yourself cake studio” relocated from Allen Street in Mechanicsburg

5. Run of national games should help the Bills prep for the playoffs

COVID-19 issues will once again throw a change into the Bills schedule. The last time this happened, the Bills did not play well at Tennessee. This week, the Bills will play San Francisco in Arizona due to new regulations in Santa Clara County. The Bills will be better prepared this time around and Sean McDermott will make this team learn from whatever affected them so negatively against Tennessee. With the amount of non-Sunday games, the rest of the year, that'll be great for this team as they start preparing for the playoffs. The Bills went one-and-done last year in the playoffs, and the further they go along the playoffs, the more games that they're going to play that probably aren't Sunday at 1:00 pm. There's only one per weekend and you have multiple playoff games per weekend so all the games but one every week is different than Sunday at 1:00 pm. So, getting out of their rhythm of simply preparing for the 1:00 pm kickoff every week, should benefit them for the playoffs.

Dr Ervin L “Chip” Wood - WTOK

Born November 12, 1946

Passed November 25, 2020

Dr Ervin L “Chip” Wood (74) passed away suddenly at his home in Livingston, AL, on Wednesday, November 25, 2020. The family will hold a socially distanced memorial service at First Presbyterian Church in Livingston for the immediate family and active church members on Sunday, November 29th, 2020, at 2:00 P.M.

He was the son of Ervin Lester and Juanita Watson Wood. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his beloved wife Velinda Smith Wood, his son Jason and wife Lindy Wood, of Freeport, FL., and his son Jonathan and wife Jess Wood of Livingston, AL. He is also survived by his sister Barbara Ausburn, and nephew Rob and wife Jennifer Cummings and their children of Moultrie, GA and his sisters in law Hilda Smith Thomas and husband Dr. William Thomas of Troy, AL, and Peggy Grady Smith of Dothan, AL, along with numerous nieces, nephews and their children. He has 6 cherished grandchildren Paxton (18), Kenlee (15), Brinkli (13), Weston (10), Preston (9), and Piper (7) Wood.

Chip grew up on a family farm near Moultrie, GA. He often enjoyed talking about his childhood and raising a wide array of interesting crops such as watermelons, turnip greens and tobacco in the rich south GA soil. There are numerous old photos in the family’s home of him as a young man helping around the farm. He played football at Moultrie High School where his team competed for the 3A state championship in 1964. He graduated high school in 1965, having developed a love of teamwork, education and comradery that would shape his collegiate and professional career. He attended Valdosta State University earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1969 and a Master of Education in 1971. He served as the SGA Vice President in 1971 and found his true calling in higher education. He also earned a Doctorate of Education from The University of Alabama in 1987.

He began his 48 year professional career at Moultrie Technical College in late 1971. He worked at Troy University from the mid-seventies until 1980 as the Dean of Enrollment Services. He met the love of his life, Velinda Smith, and married during this time. He also served in the Alabama Air National Guard while in Troy. As a young, and ambitious educational administrator he was hired in 1980 at Livingston University. He was at Livingston, now the University of West Alabama, in various roles in student affairs, including sixteen years as the Vice President of Student Affairs. Chip was the ultimate professional and was highly regarded around the state and region. He was very organized, caring and articulate being called on to speak at high school graduations across the state. As a campus leader he displayed a calm, caring and compassionate demeanor and was respected by many faculty, staff and students alike. These professional traits carried over into his personal relationships with his wife, children and grandchildren.

After retiring from UWA in 2000, he continued his work in education as executive director for the Alabama Counseling Association until 2018 where he made dear friends and positively impacted the many high school, college, and professional counselors in the state. After his career, he continued to guide and assist his son’s in various businesses and farming ventures, right up until the morning he passed away.

Along, with a long and successful career in education, Chip was a faithful believer and active member in the Presbyterian Church. He served as deacon and elder at First Presbyterian Church in Troy, AL.  He continued to serve passionately for 40 years as an elder of First Presbyterian Church in Livingston, AL until his death. He used his education and administration background to assist the congregation organizing and leading multiple pastoral search committees. He was often asked to speak at church meetings and strived to be positive, inspiring, and articulate.

He stayed true to his farming roots through many years of maintaining beautiful gardens and flowers at his home. He constructed a “old time” tin roof over his patio to mimic the tin roof of his original family home in Georgia. He enjoyed sitting there during rain showers at night as it took him back to his childhood. His love of sports continued throughout his life, as he supported UWA athletics, and was a season ticket holder for University of Alabama football and baseball. He especially enjoyed attending his son’s high school sporting events and later his grandchildren as they competed.

Our family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the many family and friends that have reached out during this difficult time. We give special thanks to the wonderful family at First Presbyterian Church. It has been an integral part of our life and gives us strength and hope for the future. We rest easier knowing that Chip is with our Lord Jesus Christ.

The family suggests that memorials be made to Westonwood Ranch in Freeport, FL, a non- profit organization providing therapeutic programs for individuals affected by Autism and other developmental disabilities. The charitable organization was formed in 2017 in honor of Chip’s grandson, Weston Wood who is affected by Autism. A reception for the celebration of his life and friendships will be held in Livingston, AL at a later date.

Investigators: Wood stove caused fire that destroyed Freeport home - pressherald.com

A fire destroys a house on Crow’s Nest Drive in South Freeport on Sunday night. Photo by Freeport Fire Chief Charlie Jordan

FREEPORT — Investigators with the state fire marshal’s office determined a wood stove caused a fire that destroyed a Freeport family’s home at 29 Crows Nest Dr. Sunday, according to Freeport Fire Chief Charles Jordan.

The stove was installed Sunday in a shed attached to the garage, Jordan said.

The home belonged to Justine Simon and Matthew Odlin.

The couple and two children escaped the blaze and went to a neighbor’s home.

Another neighbor reported the fire just before 6 p.m., but by the time firefighters arrived, flames had filled the house.

“Portions of the house were starting to collapse when we arrived,” Jordan said.

One corner of the house remained standing but the rest was leveled.

A Lexus in the driveway was also destroyed in the fire.

The house was one of three on Crows Nest Drive, a short road in a wooded, rural area near Cousins River.

“A fire would have to gain some good headway for a neighbor to see it,” Jordan said.

Assessing records show Simon and Odlin purchased the 2,500-square-foot home in December 2018. The 2,500-square-foot house was assessed at $213,100. Jordan said the home was insured.

The house was built in 1985 using an open concept that included a great room with a cathedral ceiling, which helped the fire spread quickly.

Jordan said the family is staying out of town with family members.

It’s a very difficult time for someone to lose their home, “and they had two children and obviously it’s tough on the kids to have this happen,” Jordan said. “We certainly feel for them.”

Are DeMarcus Cousins and Christian Wood the Rockets’ new Twin Towers? - Space City Scoop

sedar.indah.link

The Houston Rockets’ recent signings of DeMarcus Cousins and Christian Wood are the traditional big men Stephen Silas needs.

Last week was an insightful week for the Houston Rockets with their signings of Christian Wood and DeMarcus Cousins in free agency. The Rockets desperately needed the two big men to bring the franchise’s micro-ball chapter to a close.

For Rockets’ fans, the signings of Wood and Cousins harkens back to the days of Ralph Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwon. Hopefully, James Harden and Russell Westbrook have taken notice and remain content with extending their stays in Houston.

The narrative of Harden and Westbrook wanting out has centered around the Rockets’ new head coach Stephen Silas. Rockets’ owner Tilman Fertitta had pushed hard to sign former Rockets head coach Jeff Van Gundy, which blatantly ignored his superstar duo’s wishes.

In the end, Fertitta gave in to his superstar’s desires and hired Stephen Silas as the Rockets’ next head coach. Even though Fertitta had wanted Van Gundy, he still honored his superstars’ input but the damage was done.

Although there was excitement in Houston over Silas’ hiring, Westbrook and Harden still wanted out. However, it has been extremely difficult for the Rockets to trade either Westbrook or Harden.

The difficulty in moving Harden has stemmed from finding an appropriate haul in return for the three-time scoring champ, while trading Westbrook has been hard because of his contract.

Rafael Stone, the Rockets general manager, hasn’t been pressured when it comes to trading Harden or Westbrook and both seem likely to remain in Houston for the beginning of the season. Stephen Silas will be working with a talented roster but he still has to convince Harden and Westbrook that Houston is the right place for them.

The signings of Cousins and Wood could be the carrot that keeps Harden and Westbrook content. Wood has mentioned that he played pick-up-ball with Harden this offseason in Los Angeles already and began building a relationship with him.

As an NBA superstar, Harden probably gave a nod of approval over Stone’s signing of Cousins. With Harden’s burgeoning relationship with Wood and his blessings over the Cousins signing it’s likely he’ll be comfortable staying in Houston because of their new big men.

Are Cousins and Wood the Houston Rockets’ new Twin Towers?

The Rockets have not had a frontcourt duo like Cousins and Wood since Olajuwon and Sampson in the late ’80s. The high point of Olajuwon and Sampson’s tenure was when the Rockets were Western Conference champions in 1986.

Over their three full seasons together the duo combined to average 41.9 points, 21.9 rebounds, and 4.8 blocks per game. The one-two punch led Houstonians to refer to Olajuwon and Sampson as the “Twin Towers” because they were both 7-feet-tall.

Now, comparing Wood and Cousins to Olajuwon and Sampson before they’ve played a game together is too soon but ignoring the possibility altogether is pessimistic. While the original Twin Towers were bound to the paint to score, the “Twin Towers 2.0” are a threat from anywhere on the court.

How Silas uses the 6’10 centers on offense will be interesting, as their talent could be overwhelming. A starting-five with Wood and Cousins in it could be treacherous for opposing teams.

Cousins played great alongside current Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis when both played for the New Orleans Pelicans in 2017-18. Cousins, while playing for the Pelicans, averaged 25 points and five assists per game.

Cousins is an excellent passer and can handle the ball like a guard on the perimeter. Don’t be surprised if Silas runs pick-and-rolls where Wood and Cousins are setting picks for each other.

When Cousins was in New Orleans the Pelicans ran pick-and-rolls between him and Davis to great effect. Cousins’ ability to scan the floor and pick the right pass will allow him and Wood to seamlessly inhabit the floor together.

Silas won’t have to worry about spacing with the two on the court either because of their shooting and athletic abilities. Both centers have shot over 33 percent from 3-point range over their careers, which is a necessity for the Rockets’ offense.

Hopefully, Harden and Westbrook won’t mind sacrificing some of their scoring for Cousins and Wood. Putting these four players together could be magnificent for the Rockets this upcoming season and put to rest Harden and Westbrook’s desire to leave.

If Silas can figure things out by the time training camp comes to an end the Rockets could have a potent lineup built around these four. In Wood and Cousins, the Houston Rockets have their “Twin Towers” of the 2020s.
