James Anthony Wood

James Anthony Wood passed into forever on September 24, 2020, at the age of 63 from an extremely aggressive cancer that had metastasized to his brain.
A native of the Los Angeles area, Jim and the Wood family moved to Woodland before finally settling in Santa Rosa, CA in 1971 when Jim was 14 years of age. In 2003, tired of the size and climate of Sonoma County, Jim moved his own family to Humboldt County where he had taken the position as Department Programmer/ Analyst in the Recorders Office.
At heart, Jim was an artist; his method of expression was music. He greatly appreciated and was influenced by the music of Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead. Although he referred to himself as a folk artist, and played in that style whenever he performed, Jim's record collection was quite eclectic. He just appreciated good music.
After retiring from the County in 2011, Jim began spending time working on his home and yards. He created a little paradise in one side yard that he referred to as "Hawaii" and a patch in front of his garage/shop which he dubbed "Mexico". A favorite phrase used as he worked on nearly every one of his projects, adopted as the family motto, was "it's temporary".
Jim is survived by his wife of 31 years, Sandra, and his three children Jayme, James and Jonathan. He is also survived by his mother, Elvina Wood, three sisters, Annette Neal, Helen Frater, and Mary Wood, and his brother, Steven Wood, several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Jim was preceded in death by his father, William Wood, and his sister Geri Van Emmerick.
Per Jim's wishes, no funeral services were held.

Youths kick furniture at Austrian church, no one hurt - Minneapolis Star Tribune

VIENNA — A group of 30 to 50 youths gathered in a Vienna church earlier this week, kicking furniture but then dispersing after police were called, authorities said Saturday.

The incident drew condemnation from leading politicians at a time when nearby France has seen Islamic extremist attacks, one of them in a church.

The incident at the St. Anton church in Vienna's Favoriten district happened on Thursday evening. It was reported a day later by the Kurier newspaper, which said investigators suspect the intruders were Turkish youths who had organized via social media.

Police said a priest called police when the youths started kicking the furniture, and that they dispersed in several directions before officers arrived. No damage was caused and no people were hurt or threatened, according to a police statement Saturday. The local branch of the domestic intelligence agency was looking into the matter.

The incident came at a time of heightened tensions over attacks in France and the French president's vow to protect the right to caricature the Prophet Muhammad, a stance the Turkish president has assailed.

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz on Friday night tweeted the Kurier report with the comment: "All Christians must be able to exercise their belief in Austria freely and safely! We will continue the fight against political Islam with determination and will show no false tolerance."

In a separate incident, police said an Afghan man walked into Vienna's cathedral, the Stephansdom, early Saturday morning and shouted unspecified "Islamic slogans." Police said he left a "confused impression" and a medical examination was being conducted. Investigators searched the cathedral but found nothing untoward.

OBITUARY: James Anthony Wood, 1956-2020 - Lost Coast Outpost

sedar.indah.link

James Anthony Wood passed into forever on September 24, 2020, at the age of 63 from an extremely aggressive cancer, that had not yet been formally diagnosed, which had metastasized to his brain.

A native of the Los Angeles area, Jim and the Wood family moved to Woodland before finally settling in Santa Rosa in 1971 when Jim was 14 years of age.

At an early age, Jim developed a love of music and wanted to become a trumpet player like Herb Alpert. It was perhaps due to an unexpected Christmas gift that made his “go to” instrument the guitar. He greatly appreciated and was influenced by the music of Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead. While still living in Santa Rosa, Jim performed solo at open mic nights in a little bar in Sebastopol on a regular basis and wrote several songs with a longtime friend. Although he referred to himself as a folk artist, and played that in that style whenever he performed, Jim’s record collection was quite eclectic; he just appreciated good music.

In high school, Jim was an accomplished member of the Montgomery High wrestling team, earning several medals in multiple weight classes and even making it to State competition. After graduating high school, Jim joined the Navy and spent time stationed in Hawaii while assigned to the Marines as a Navy Corpsman. Upon completion of his 4 years with the military, Jim’s direction in life became a bit unguided and one day he took off for Europe where he spent an adventurous year living in Germany. Upon returning home, Jim resumed his academic career and attended several institutions of higher learning.

In the summer of 1985, at the age of 28, Jim happened to mention to a co-worker that he was looking to meet a “nice girl.” Turns out the co-worker had an unattached sister who could be described as such. During Labor Day weekend, the two met in the parking lot of the Carl’s Jr where he worked for quick introductions and in 1989 the two were married. As if getting married wasn’t enough, Jim became a father in July 1990 to a daughter. Two more children, boys born in 1995 and 1998, would complete his family.

Feeling that he was now grounded, with a family and home of his own, Jim returned to college to pursue and earn a degree; a student ID depicts a smiling student on the day of registration along with the top of his baby daughter’s head. Jim earned a BS degree in Computer Science from Sonoma State University in 1994. Degree in hand, he pursued his career as a Software Developer/Engineer working for such companies as Fair Isaac in Marin County and Motion Analysis in Sonoma County. In May of 2003, tired of the population size and heat of Sonoma County, Jim and his young family relocated to Humboldt County where he took up residence in the Recorders Office as their Department Programmer/Analyst.

After 8 years in the Recorders Office, Jim retired in the summer of 2011 and, like most retirees, didn’t quite know what to do with his time; having lost some feeling in his left forearm and fingers, he had stopped working on his music some years before. Luckily, he met a man who wasn’t going to let his arm numbness get in the way of learning to play guitar and that gave Jim the gentle nudge he needed to pick it up once again. Thanks Bruce!

In addition to his music, Jim spent time working on his house and yards. He created a little paradise out of one side yard that, with its citrus trees and flowers, he referred to as “Hawaii”; in the back, a patch near his shop and greenhouse was dubbed “Mexico”. A favorite phrase used as he worked on nearly every one of his projects, adopted as the family motto, was “it’s temporary”.

Thanks to the COVID pandemic, Jim also began spending quality time in the kitchen. Unfortunately, that meant he needed to purchase all kinds of “necessary” equipment to be able to bake pizzas, pork buns, Dutch babies, crepes and various loaves of breads. As much as Jim might deny it, he was a shopaholic; always looking for that something new or realizing that he needed just one more piece of equipment before he could move a project forward.

Jim was a work in progress and a restless spirit.

Jim is survived by his wife of 31 years, Sandra, and his three children Jayme, James (not a Jr.) and Jonathan. He is also survived by his mother, Elvina Wood, three sisters, Annette Neal (Ron), Helen Frater (Bill), and Mary Wood, and his brother, Steven Wood (Veronica), several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Jim was preceded in death by his father, William Wood, and his sister Geri Van Emmerick (Otto).

Per Jim’s wishes, no funeral services were held.

An SC wood pellet plant seeks to expand, but activists worry about pollution and climate - Charleston Post Courier

sedar.indah.link

GREENWOOD — The Southeast's biggest wood pellet producer is seeking to expand its only South Carolina plant, driven by energy demand from across the Atlantic.

But some neighbors of the Enviva Biomass plant in Greenwood worry about the impact of the plant pumping out tens of thousands more tons of the wood fuel pellets, which are a similar shape and slightly smaller than cigarette butts. The closest residents don't want increased air pollution in the area.

At the same time, there's disagreement about whether European countries should continue to rely on wood as they transition away from coal and battle climate change.

South Carolina has long had a booming forest industry, particularly for paper and solid wood. It contributed $21.2 billion to the state's economy in 2018. Pellets like the ones produced here are a small, if growing, piece of the pie. They account for just 1 percent of the state's forest products, said Tim Adams of the S.C. Forestry Commission, and the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control has permitted just four companies to produce them.

But among producers, Enviva looms large. The Greenwood site is one of nine the Maryland-based firm owns across the Southeast.

In 2018, it took over the plant, where logs are stripped of bark, chipped, milled, dried, milled again into smaller pieces and finally pressed into pellets. The process creates particulate matter and chemical gases, both of which can be harmful to breathe.

Wood pellet mill in rural SC town draws air pollution complaints, threats of legal action

Activists who oppose expanding the plant say it is already putting too much pollution into the air. Alectron Dorfman of the advocacy group Lakeland Citizens for Clean Air said people nearby wake up to find their properties coated in sawdust, and that the many logging trucks that bring wood to the plant are disruptive.

"We don't understand why DHEC is not protecting its citizens," Dorfman said.

In July, Enviva signed a consent order with DHEC, paying a $13,000 fine and admitting it hadn't kept proper records on its equipment. It also agreed that smoke coming from its smokestacks was too thick and needed a plan to control dust.

The agency's next step is to issue its final decision on the expansion permit, which asked for a roughly 25 percent increase in production. DHEC had no timeline for when that will happen.

Enviva spokeswoman Maria Moreno said the expansion would upgrade pollution controls and support 30 more "indirect" jobs, though no new ones at the plant itself. She also said that all of the issues identified in the July consent order had been fixed.

"Every dollar we spend in Greenwood creates an economic impact that generates additional salaries, taxes, revenue for landowners, and spending in our community," Moreno wrote in an email. "The expansion permit will allow Enviva to reduce emissions while moderately increasing production."

Accounting questions

Demand across an ocean, particularly from the formerly coal-dependent United Kingdom, has been the biggest driver of the wood pellet market so far.

At issue are clean energy standards aimed at reducing the planet-warming carbon gasses given off from fossil fuels. Rita Frost, a campaigns director with forest conservation nonprofit Dogwood Alliance, said agreements to reduce emissions count wood pellets in the land-use category in countries where trees are cut. To avoid double-counting, emissions aren't counted when the pellets are burned at a power plant.

But that accounting logic only works if the exporter is held to the same rules as the importer, and in 2017, President Donald Trump announced that the United States would leave the Paris Climate Accord that had been penned two years earlier.

Enviva provided

About 80 people work at the wood pellet plant run by Enviva Biomass in Greenwood. Enviva Biomass/Provided

This fact was also highlighted in a recent report by the European Academies Science Advisory Council. The group is an independent consortium of top scientists from around Europe.

There are further problems, the council found. Replacement trees have to be planted for the ones cut, but because the time for a replacement tree to grow to the same extent could exceed a decade, this method isn't fast enough to meet the Paris agreement's standards.

The analysis also said that, "Reversing deforestation, reforestation, increasing soil carbon levels and enhancing wetlands remain the most cost-effective and currently viable approaches (to removing carbon from the atmosphere)."

Moreno, by contrast, said that wood is a necessary replacement to fossil fuels like coal if European countries are actually going to be able to meet energy targets.

Patricia Layton, director of Clemson University's Wood Utilization and Design Institute, said reforestation is an important tool to curb climate change. She said that Europe in particular needs to catch up in restoring forests.

"They're taking their environmental problems, i.e. 'we don't want to use fossil fuels anymore,' and they're pushing them to other countries," she said.

But she said that in South Carolina forest managers are extremely successful in re-growing trees after they're harvested. The state has generally added forested land since records began in the 1930s, and about 13 million acres of the state are now covered.

Maintaining forests

About 88 percent of South Carolina's forests are privately owned, and there are some programs that incentivize landowners to protect their forests specifically to suck up atmospheric carbon dioxide. But conservation programs don't always work for landowners with smaller plots.

Ultimately, Layton said, forest owners need a revenue source to hold on to the property, and in places like Greenwood, there aren't other plants or mills to consume timber.

Forest owners "need to have those markets, or (they're) going to not own that land," she said.

SC forests are protected for trapping carbon, with a little help from California

Still, activists and some residents in Greenwood are worried about the effects of the Enviva facility. They even organized a car rally to drive around DHEC's headquarters in Columbia in September, honking horns to voice displeasure, according to the Rev. Leo Woodberry, who participated.

Woodberry, a clean energy activist based in Florence, said that it's a particularly bad time to expand a plant with air emissions because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which often attacks the lungs.

"Their first objective and mission should be to protect public health," Woodberry said of DHEC.

Residents closest to the plant, who are disproportionately Black and poorer, have had a hard time engaging with the issue during the pandemic. When DHEC held a public hearing on the proposed expansion at the end of the summer, many people in Greenwood couldn't participate because it was virtual and many lack broadband, said Erniko Brown, an organizer with Dogwood Alliance.

"The community that’s affected by what’s truly going on didn’t even have the access ... to get on this call and speak for themselves," Brown said.

Valley residents barred from burning wood for now due to bad air quality - KFSN-TV

sedar.indah.link
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Nights have been getting cool enough for some families to start thinking about using their wood-burning fireplaces.

Sunday would normally mark the start of the season when you can do that but the Valley Air District is expected to issue a no-burn day on Sunday and beyond due to bad air quality.

The district's Air Quality Science Director Jon Klassen said, "You can still see a lot of haze in the area."

Because of that, the district is expected to limit the use of wood-burning fireplaces.

Satellite images show how wildfire smoke from the Creek and SQF Complex fires continue to settle over the Valley.

The high levels of PM2.5 - fine particulate matter - means people won't be able to burn wood to stay warm unless they have an exemption.

Klassen said, "The weather really isn't projected to change until we get into late next week so even beyond what we'll see on Sunday we're expecting to have wood-burning curtailments in effect likely for most of next week."

It's important you check before you burn.

Smoke spotted coming from a chimney on days when wood-burning was not allowed led to over 400 citations last winter.

Heather Heinks of the air district said, "A wood-burning violation would run a valley resident $100. They can cut that cost in half if they attend an educational training that the district hosts."

The district also has an app you can use to check which days you can burn.

Heinks said, "You can also use that same app to report a violation. Maybe your neighbor burns all the time. Maybe they don't understand the rule that exists."

There were also limitations on what you can burn - wood only.

Residents are not allowed to burn leaves, trash, or lawn clippings at any time.

Wood Dale police getting body cameras - Chicago Daily Herald

sedar.indah.link

Wood Dale police officers are expected to be equipped with body cameras by January.

The city has spent $87,610 to buy a new camera system for the police department's 35 sworn officers and four community service officers. Decade-old cameras in squad cars already have been replaced as part of the purchase.

"It gives a full record of what really happens in a situation," Police Chief Greg Vesta said. "It's beneficial to both law enforcement and the public to have this level of transparency."

Earlier this year, the city council approved the purchase of the Panasonic Arbitrator cameras. The police department picked the system because it syncs between squad and body cameras, has the ability to eliminate a separate microphone for the squad camera, and manages digital evidence on one platform.

The department began using the squad car cameras in February and is expected to start using the body cameras by Jan. 1.

Money for the purchase came from the $200,000 DUI Technology Fund, which is supported by DUI convictions and fines that are assessed by the court.

The cameras will have 12 hours of battery life with replaceable batteries, as well as mounting kits for the officer's uniforms. Wood Dale PD is hoping to get grants to reduce the cost of the cameras by up to $62,000, which could be approved by next spring.

Vesta says camera protocols will follow Illinois state law. The devices will be on when officers are in emergency driving situations, executing search warrants, on routine calls or calls for service, doing searches, or transporting suspects.

Storage will not be kept on the cloud. Instead, the department will have on-site storage to save videos captured by video equipment at almost no cost to the village.

High-profile cases that are recorded will be kept for a minimum of two years, and routine calls will be deleted after 90 days. That decision will save the village $100,000, officials said.

The All-Natural Way to Get Rid of Rings on a Wood Table (and Why You Need to Try It) - PureWow

sedar.indah.link

Your parents always nagged you about using coasters, which seemed unnecessarily fussy…until you noticed white rings popping up on your side tables. And dining room table. And, well, you get the idea. They’re annoying, but they don’t mean your counters are ruined.

If the wood rings are white or cloudy-colored, there’s an easy fix: Blast them with a hair dryer. Seriously. For well-set stains, the cleaning pros at Molly Maid say it can take up to 15 minutes to remove them. (And, once it’s mostly disappeared, they recommend conditioning the wood with olive oil, mineral oil or a little mayonnaise.) You’ll want to hold the dryer just an inch or two away from the ring, as shown in this video:

Katie Wood navigates a modern rock love affair on 'Where Have You Been?' - Vanyaland

sedar.indah.link

It’s been several months now, but we’re still damn-near shook over Kate Wood’s breakout June single “Uh Huh Yeah”, which should soon start popping up on Best of 2020 lists from the true real ones. But Wood isn’t sitting around idly waiting for end-of-year round-up accolades: She’s powering through with another crystalline single that captures and holds, and it’s called “Where Have You Been?”

This new track, about trying to understand the deep emotions we develop for a partner, is a slinky seducer cut from Wood’s ’80s-rich nostalgia cloth, showing a slightly different musical side while still furthering her charismatic charm over a glittery foundation of modern rock and new wave. If the beloved Laura Branigan were still alive, we’d be clamoring for a collaboration.

“It’s hard to admit sometimes when you’re in love for whatever reason… it can make you feel uneasy,” Wood says about the track. “I feel as though it’s tempting to romanticize a situation or idolize someone and the song represents that moment you realize that is what you’re doing, it’s like a daydream.”

Get lost in Wood’s own musical fantasyland below, and start paying attention to those year-end lists.

Is Home Furniture Rental the Next Big Thing? - Architectural Digest

sedar.indah.link

The meaning of home is changing. The home of 2020 has become a squeezed-in office, an improvised classroom, a reluctant gym, and a spontaneous family restaurant all at once. And in this time of makeshift living, rented furniture may well be the only thing we can commit to these days.

Furniture rental had been on the rise before the pandemic, but since COVID-19 shrank the world to the size of our homes, renting furniture has emerged as a viable—and more sustainable—solution to a world in flux. Say hello to commitment-free furniture—such is the motto of Fernish, the premium furniture rental company that lets you binge TV on that velvet sofa you always wanted, until you decide to keep it, return it, or swap it out for that sectional sofa you’ve always wanted.

“Everything is so fluid now, and that level of flexibility speaks very well for our service,” says Michael Barlow, the company’s cofounder and CEO. With the rise of remote working and temporary setups at Mom and Dad’s house, Fernish has seen a rather predictable 315% increase in home office orders, but also a surprising rise in decor and soft goods: Pillow and throw orders have increased by 80% and mirror and wall art orders have jumped by 105%. “You’re trying to refresh your space now that your home is not just your home,” says Michael.

Furniture rental isn’t exactly new. Since 1986, Rent-a-Center’s rent-to-own model has taken in billions of dollars in U.S. revenue. But unlike Rent-a-Center, which targets cash-strapped consumers, next-generation furniture rental services like Feather, Furnishr, and Casa One were designed for a younger crowd with a penchant for good design. The typical Fernish customer is in their early 20s or 30s, and 90% of Fernish customers had also never considered renting furniture before.

Fernish lets you try out anything from accent chairs to bar carts to plants. But its most popular feature is the Curated Room, which allows you to pick and choose from a selection of predesigned rooms that vary in style from midcentury modern to industrial modern to California chic. The luxury of no-commitment comes at a price— you’re charged less the longer you rent a piece, but if you fall in love with that dresser and decide you’re ready to commit after all, you can apply your previous monthly payments to the purchase price and own it outright.

And when that desk is rendered useless because your office is back, and life is back, and the pandemic is nothing but a speck in your rearview mirror, Fernish will relieve you of it free of charge. Except that unlike the 10 million tons of furniture that go to landfills every year, your desk will be revarnished, repainted, and disinfected through an 11-step sanitation process, and any damaged parts will be repaired. Your old desk, now good as new, will then be shipped off to grace someone else’s home office. “Everything we put into circulation has to be durable, modular, and refurbishable,” says Michael. “We have thousands of products in their third cycle and [people] can’t tell the difference.”

The appeal of furniture rental in times as nebulous as these is not surprising. It’s convenient, it’s flexible, and it fits right into a lifestyle where everything, even goats, can be delivered to your doorstep. And while there is still work to be done with the carbon footprint of a supply chain reliant on back-and-forth deliveries and pickups, renting your next set of bedside tables remains a greener alternative to disposable flatpacks you’re bound to get rid of when the world reopens. “The circular economy is the future of consumption globally,” says Michael. “What we’ve been focused on is bringing that to furniture.”

Local non-profit helping derecho victims with replacing furniture - KCRG

sedar.indah.link

HIAWATHA, Iowa (KCRG) -More than two months after the derecho, many families with damaged homes are still finding new places to live.

One local non-profit is working to help those families by taking one worry away - replacing furniture.

Savanah Prine and her mother have been sleeping in chairs after they lost their apartment and most of their furniture in the derecho. “We were really scared because I was about 9 months pregnant...and all of a sudden, we heard a train sound coming through. Next thing we know we have rain just pouring into our apartment," says Prine. After two months, Prine’s family, with her newborn baby, was finally able to find another apartment-but she still didn’t have anything to put in it. “It would be super hard, because we’re on a fixed income so it would be impossible to find beds, couches, to fill up a place to live," says Prine.

Then, they reached out to Central Furniture Rescue, a Hiawatha non-profit, for help. Less than a week after Prine and her family had moved into their new apartment, C.F.R. delivered them a new place to sleep, and much more.

President and Executive Director of the Central Furniture Rescue Susan Johnston says the demand for furniture has jumped by 25% since August, and she doesn’t expect things to slow down. She says the community was already seeing a shortage of housing, and the derecho is backing things up even more. “The derecho happened in August. Well, it’s the end of October, and we’re still getting referrals. And we will keep getting referrals. There are people who will not be placed into a new place until spring," says Johnston.

Johnston says in the days after the storm her team immediately knew there would be a serious need for furniture, and they started looking for donations. But, they didn’t have to look far.

Lutheran Church of Hope in Des Moines sent them four semis with more than 900 pieces of furniture, enough to help 85-100 families.

“And we now have all of this furniture, and we’re ready. We’re ready whenever the people need it," says Johnston.

C.F.R. has given furniture to more than 300 families this year, and they have more deliveries scheduled every week. Johnston says their team will be ready to help people get back on their feet for as long as it takes. “And we want to give them one less thing to worry about. You focus on getting yourself housed. Council OKs purchase of Wood Street parkland - Austin Monitor

sedar.indah.link

After a lengthy discussion about the rules regulating acquisition of city parkland, Council voted 7-2-2 on Thursday to purchase 0.214 acres of downtown property at 702 Wood St. Council members Jimmy Flannigan and Pio Renteria voted no, and Council Member Natasha Harper-Madison and Mayor Pro Tem Delia Garza abstained.

Renteria complained that the $1,174,250 price tag on the property was too high for such a small piece of land on Shoal Creek. Flannigan and Harper-Madison had numerous questions about whether the downtown property was being purchased in accordance with the city’s rules about use of parkland dedication funds. But both concluded that the parks department was working hard to follow the regulations.

Two specific aspects of the parcel make it attractive for park property, as Parks and Recreation Department Director Kimberly McNeeley explained. First of all, under rules governing use of parkland dedication funds, the city must acquire parkland within one half-mile or less from the developments that paid the fees. If no such property can be found, PARD can look within two miles.

According to a memo from staff, “The developments whose fees would pay for this acquisition are within the service area defined by City Code and the Parkland Dedication Operating Procedures. This acquisition is the most suitable park purchase in those developments’ service area, approximately less than a mile from its location.”

Looking at the property from an equity standpoint, PARD noted that the land was previously a historic settlement, once home to an enclave of African Americans and later Mexican American settlers.

The Texas Historical Commission, which provided a marker for the property, noted, “as the frontier city’s natural Western boundary, Shoal Creek became a settling point for formerly enslaved people following the Civil War. The community along Shoal Creek was part of the African American settlements of West Austin which developed in the years after Reconstruction. As domestic servants, cooks, drivers, carpenters and laborers, residents influenced the lives and culture of Austin. Despite being surrounded by the homes of wealthier Anglos in the era of increasing racial prejudice, the African American community on Wood Street thrived into the 1920s.”

Shoal Creek Conservancy Executive Director Ivey Kaiser wrote Council a lengthy letter on Oct. 12 supporting acquisition of the property: “702 Wood Street is a unique and worthy candidate for acquisition in terms of its cultural heritage, its creekside location, and the opportunities it affords to improve safety and accessibility for trail users along this busy link in Austin’s growing trail network.”

The Shoal Creek Conservancy and supporters of hiking and biking along the city’s trails envision a seamless and connected pathway throughout the Shoal Creek corridor. The Wood Street property offers an important link along the trail. Kaiser wrote, “There is currently an informal entrance to the Shoal Creek Trail situated on a steep slope on the north side of the Sixth Street bridge, less than 450 feet from 702 Wood Street. This entrance is located on private property and is maintained by (the conservancy)” on a volunteer basis. Acquisition of the Wood Street parcel presents “the opportunity to create a fully accessible trailhead in the vicinity,” she wrote.

This was the second time the question of acquiring the property has come before Council. The matter was postponed earlier this month after Harper-Madison said she had numerous questions about the project. McNeeley produced a lengthy document in response to Council’s questions explaining the process for deciding which properties to purchase.

The Austin Monitor’s work is made possible by donations from the community. Though our reporting covers donors from time to time, we are careful to keep business and editorial efforts separate while maintaining transparency. Amazon In Talks To Scoop Up Female Assassin Feature Script ‘Ruby’ From Kat Wood; 87North Producing - Deadline

sedar.indah.link

EXCLUSIVE: Amazon is in negotiations to pick up the screenplay Ruby, a female assassin action feature by Kat Wood which I hear is going for around six figures.

87North is coming aboard to produce Ruby with the label’s Kelly McCormick, Annie Marter and David Leitch producing

The story, I hear, is in the spirit of the Geena Davis-Samuel L. Jackson 1996 cult action femme pic Long Kiss Goodnight, which followed an amnesiatic schoolteacher who sets out on a journey to find out who she is with the help of a private detective until they uncover a dark conspiracy.

Wood grew up in Yarm, a quiet town in North East England, and is a former BBC broadcast journalist. Her sci-fi script Envoy, which we first told you about, sold to Amy Pascal’s Pascal Pictures in 2017, with her sci-fi pitch Genus, which we also first reported, sold to Pascal Pictures in a competitive bidding situation the following year. Skydance Media bought Wood’s action short story and pitch Diplomatic Courier in the spring of 2019.

Wood’s first feature as director was the contained thriller Zero, which is currently set up with Thunder Road. Her first short film, Home, stars Maggie Gyllenhaal and was produced by Oscar-nominated producer Dana Brunetti.

Leitch, the director of Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde and Hobbs & Shaw, is set to direct Sony’s Bullet Train starring Brad Pitt. Bullet Train is based on the Japanese novel Maria Beetle by Kotaro Isaka and follows five assassins who find themselves on a fast-moving bullet train from Tokyo to Morioka with only a few stops in between. As a director, and producer of the John Wick franchise, Leitch’s global box office credits have racked up over $2.2 billion.

McCormick is producing Bullet Train, and produced Atomic Blonde and Bob Odenkirk’s upcoming action thriller Nobody at Universal.

Verve and Mitch Smelkinson rep Wood. CAA reps 87North.

Hoek Is Sustainable Furniture Built in 60 Seconds - Design Milk

sedar.indah.link

Brooklyn-based design and fabrication firm A05 Studio is in the midst of a Kickstarter campaign for some very cleverly designed furniture. Hoek has been created with all of the small space, move-it-yourself dwellers in mind. This collection of click-together furniture is sleek, sustainable and can be assembled in roughly 60 seconds with no tools required. As soon as a piece of Hoek flat-packed furniture arrives at your door, all that’s required – after opening the box – is unclipping the legs from underneath the chassis and clicking them into place. That’s literally it.

living room

Post-consumer recycled HDPE plastic is milled into Hoek furniture in A05 Studio’s shop. The flexibility of the HDPE plastic holds the leg in place when assembled. Simply unclip the leg from its storage compartment beneath the chassis by pulling it upwards. The hook at the rear end of the leg is inserted first, and when pushed forward it clicks into place creating a strong durable joint. During the breakdown of a piece of furniture, the legs can be clicked back into their storage compartment in the chassis once removed from the joint. It’s just so simple and convenient.

side table

If you’re working from home, need to exercise in your living room or are having guests over, easily breakdown Hoek and store it away under your couch, bed, etc., for extra space. The HDPE can be reused, so if you ever want to change things up you can send the pieces back and they can be recycled into new furniture!
