Store conducts ‘going out of business’ sale starting this week

It is time for 91-year-old Clifford “Mick” McBride to go fishing, read and relax. His family’s longtime business, McBride Furniture Village, has offered unique, high-end furniture to loyal clients in the area for over seven decades.

This historic 73-year-old store at 310 Mad River St., Forest, is offering to the public an opportunity to purchase quality furniture during a final event at drastically reduced prices. Everything must go, including the real estate, which includes at least seven properties, representatives said.

McBride Furniture Village will commence with the “store closing” sales event this week, and new hours for this sale are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

In 1946, Mr. McBride married the former Marcile Geary, and one year later, they opened a furniture store on the main level of their Dunkirk home. Mick was 17 and Marcile was 18.

In 1951, the couple moved the store to Forest. They had no idea the store would become a “village” that attracted clients from a 100-mile radius. They also shipped furniture to loyal clients in the United Kingdom.

At that time, the main advertising tools included newspapers, radio and television in the surrounding towns and villages.

During those early days, they were turned down by a few banks for a loan to get started. Had it not been for Ralph and Olive McElroy granting them a loan, the couple may have given up on their dream of owning their own business. Mick and Marcile are creative individuals and didn’t want to settle for an ordinary furniture store.

Their four children all worked in the business at one time or another. Most recently, daughter Jody (McBride) Shields retired after being an integral part of the business for over 45 years.

“Being knowledgeable of our products and knowing our clientele has been key to our success,” she said. “Also, it’s about what the client wants without pressure.”

“Beyond owning our own business, the most rewarding part has been meeting and getting to know so many people. It has been a joy,” her father added.

In their spare time, the McBrides enjoyed traveling until recent health issues. They still enjoy family events and worshipping with their neighbors at their church.

“Life has been good and we have been blessed. Most importantly, we wish to thank all of our family, friends, clients and our entire community for their friendship, loyalty, and support over the years,” Mr. and Mrs. McBride said.

Regarding the final sale, representatives said additional markdowns are off the lowest price and some upholstered furniture can be special ordered. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted

All items are available for pick up, but a limited delivery service will be offered at a fee by local movers.
