migumi: intricate furniture by kengo kuma & associates
For its ongoing Aman Miami Beach Residences, Japanese architecture studio Kengo Kuma & Associates designs this intricate Migumi furniture collection. Upon its completion, the luxurious beachfront project will be furnished with this collection of tables and chairs, which has drawn inspiration from the abundant sunlight of Miami and features a wooden framework made up of thin wooden pieces. The name ‘Migumi’ itself, derived from ‘Mi-Assembly,’ reflects the intricate assembly of the furniture and the harmonious interplay of materials. The collection has been designed by Kazuhiko Miyazawa, Mikuru Hirasawa at Kengo Kuma & Associates. Take a closer look inside Aman Miami Beach Residences here!

a celebration of intricate timber structure
At the core of Migumi’s design by Kengo Kuma & Associates is a celebration of expressive timber joinery, a theme which will shape the latticework entrance sculpture at Aman Miami Beach Residences. The furniture series, including tables and chairs, showcases a 20-millimeter square oak member framework, emphasizing the elegance of simplicity. To ensure strength, a square stainless-steel pipe is incorporated in areas where stress is most concentrated. This structural consideration ensures durability in a way that is subtle, maintaining the ultra-lightweight illusion. The play of shadows created by the wooden framework adds a touch of Miami’s sun-drenched essence. Inspired by the changing shadows, the collection captures an effect that evolves with the passage of time, creating an ever-shifting ambiance that resonates with the dynamic spirit of the sunny city.

drawing from the architecture of aman miami beach
Migumi will find its perfect home within Kengo Kuma & Associates’ Aman Miami Beach Residences, a project that harnesses the vibrant energy of Miami with serene natural materials. The choice of natural timber as the primary material aligns with the project’s overall material palette, promoting a harmonious connection with nature. Migumi stands as a testament to Kengo Kuma’s sensitivity to place, echoing the wooden louvers that connect floors and the knife-edge slabs that suggest movement and rhythm. While these angled slabs provide shelter for the wraparound terraces and floor-to-ceiling windows, they further contribute to the overall rhythm of the architecture.
