COLONIE — Stickley Furniture mistakenly sent customers a flyer implying its Wolf Road store was closing or relocating, according to a sales partner.
The furniture store’s flyers sent to customers on Wednesday mentioning a “store closing/moving sale” led to over 40 concerned calls the next day, according to its staff. Sales partner Kyle Whyard said the wording on the back of the flyer was copied from similar sales events, including one at the company’s White Plains store which is relocating. He said the flyer was corrected to feature only the front part promoting 20 percent off furniture accessories and 60 to 75 percent off hand-knotted rugs, along with a coupon for an extra 10 percent off discounted goods.
“This current location on Wolf Road is not closing,” Whyard said. “The mailer on the backside is not correct. We did have some overlap and a mistake in advertising.”

On the street-facing side of Stickley Furniture on 151 Wolf Road, banners advertise a “complete sell-off” and “huge savings.” The storefront features a “$5 million-dollar sell-off” banner, indicating the total inventory cost for sale. Near the front desk, a leather armchair is labeled $887, discounted from $1,371, a nightstand is priced at $979, reduced from $1,512, and an end table is available for $597, down from $1,607.
The store held a similar sales event in 2018. Whyard said it allows the company to conduct a “whole year’s worth of business in a short amount of time.” On Thursday, over 60 people visited the store within hours, he said.
The event also helps the store clear its inventory, Whyard said.
“Styles change, people’s interests change. We need to be evolving with them,” he said.
Founded in 1900, Stickley was acquired from company founder Leopold Stickley’s widow by Alfred and Aminy Audi in 1974. It has grown in that time from 25 employees to over 1,200, with retail stores spanning Colonie, Syracuse, Rochester, White Plains, New York City, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Colorado.
Operations Manager Joli Pizzigati said traditional-style furniture is becoming less popular as people choose more modern styles.
“This is something that would’ve been in your grandparents' house and something that was unique,” Pizzigati said pointing to a sold traditional sideboard table that was labeled at about 45 percent off its original price. “They still love it, but we’ve kind of gotten away from it because people now want to unfortunately replace furniture because they get tired of it. In my generation, the generation before that, they never got tired of anything.”
Regarding the flyer error, Whyard said the concerned response from customers reflects positively on the store.
“Why would that many people call in a matter of hours? Those are a lot of concerned patrons that have come in year after year. They buy stuff from us all the time,” Whyard said. “And we want to make sure they know we’re not (closing).”
