Walker Furniture delivered new mattresses to Firehouse Station 8.
LAS VEGAS — Two of Top 100 retailer Walker Furniture’s philanthropic programs continued recently, as the Las Vegas-based retailer delivered mattresses to a local fire station and named its “Help for Heroes” recipients.
As part of “Project Firehouse: Rested & Ready,” Walker provided 13 mattresses and foundations to Firehouse Station 8, which houses the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Hazmat team at 805 N. Mojave Road, on Sept. 14.
“For Walker, our ‘Rested & Ready’ firehouse project is our way of helping our first responders,” said Linda Alterwitz-Mizrahi, Walker Furniture co-owner. “We appreciate how our first responders are always on call and can only grab sleep in short intervals. They need to be rested to do their job helping others. The mattresses are our way of saying ‘thank you’.”
The mattresses being replaced are old, and Walker officials noted that the firefighters are always excited when the new ones arrive. They have the old ones stacked up and ready to go when the Walker Furniture truck arrives.
“We started this project with Clark County Firehouses in October 2018,” said Alterwitz-Mizrahi. “With interruption by the COVID-19 pandemic, deliveries took three-and-a-half years. Las Vegas Fire & Rescue is the second largest fire department in the state of Nevada, and we estimate deliveries will take more than a year. Each delivery takes careful planning.”
Help for Heroes
In addition, Walker Furniture held a ceremony and luncheon at the North Las Vegas Elks Lodge at 2939 Van Der Meer Street on Sept. 10 to announce this year’s U.S. Military veterans who are receiving furniture, some specialized, as part of Walker’s eighth annual “Help for Heroes” program. Deliveries will be specific to the needs of each recipient.
“The Help for Heroes’ program was created by Walker Furniture to help make day-to-day living a little easier for an often-overlooked segment of our community,” said Larry Alterwitz, Walker Furniture owner and CEO. “This year the program is providing some relief for 12 active military personnel and/or veterans.”
This year’s recipients were selected from letters written by family, friends and community partners and reviewed by Commander Robert Bencsko and American Legion Paradise Post 149. The vets and military will be receiving adjustable beds, motion sofas, motion recliners and lift chairs. John Mull’s Road Kill Grill provided the lunch to the veterans and their friends and families while the Las Vegas Rescue Mission donated food boxes to each recipient.
