In the world of design, an elite Justice League is turning 10. Its members are contributors to Objets Nomades, Louis Vuitton’s ongoing collection of travel-inspired objects and furniture, and this milestone year they are joined by one of the youngest recruits yet, Frank Chou, 35.
The debut of his sleek armchair and sofa for the leather goods leviathan at Milan Design Week trumpeted the arrival of a major new voice on the scene. Fittingly for a line rooted in travel, the Beijing-based designer did not conceive his pieces by looking at the furnishings of predecessors like India Mahdavi and Patricia Urquiola.
Instead he trained his eye on the fields of Yunnan, China, and the canyons of Arizona’s Antelope Valley, translating their organic layers into creases of leather and canvas in vibrant hues. The effect is arresting, a melding of the natural and the artificial. “When you look at this long curve,” he says of his sofa, “you get a feeling for the passing of time.” It’s true in this specific instance—the work’s length practically makes it a sundial—and in the grand scheme of things. Great design, Chou knows, shouldn’t aspire to be merely functional in the present but to last throughout the arc of history.

How do you prepare to be creative?
I don’t need to prepare. From the beginning of my life, I have received information from the world every second of the day. It really helps me be creative, but sometimes it’s really too much. I want to find an off switch.
How do you procrastinate?
I watch the news. It’s important, but I don’t know how to escape it. The truth is, I tell my assistant to call me. Nonstop. It’s the only way I can come back to work.

STEPHANE MURATET
What is one element that is necessary to your process?
I need a space that really belongs to me, where I feel safe. When I’m taking a shower, that’s the perfect time.
Who’s your favorite collaborator?
Louis Vuitton and Objets Nomades are very special because they’re in the middle of two industries. Designers chase timelessness. Fashion is very fast. Our collaboration reflects this balance. The value of our design is that it looks toward the future.

What have you learned from failure?
To be humble is very important. Only this way can you really understand people, who they are and what they need.
It’s said that genius is 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration. What’s the ratio for you?
I would like to give inspiration one more percentage point. Just one more. Without that you’re really working too hard. But the effort is worth it, because it leads you in the correct direction.

The first sofa I ever bought was chosen mainly for aesthetic reasons. It looked super cute in my living room and in photos, but it wasn’t the comfiest of couches, and my husband politely tolerated it for years. This year, however, the time had come to acquire a soft, nap-worthy sofa, and Valyou Furniture’s Feather Sectional certainly delivered. This sofa is comfortable, it brightens up our living room, and it’s easy to clean. Both my husband and I love it, so it’s been a win-win.
We live in a townhome, and the 88-inch sectional works perfectly for our small space. The beige color is a perfect neutral hue and goes well with the rest of our decor, and it comes with four pillows, three beige, and one mustard. The sofa arrived in two separate boxes and assembly was quick and easy. Each sofa section comes in its own box, and they attach together via a connection bridge and buckle.
Valyou Furniture Feathers Sectional Sofa
The sections are already put together when they arrive, and the assembly requires no tools, so it only took a few minutes to put the sofa together, which especially made my husband happy, as he’s the resident furniture builder in our house. Seeing as how this is a feather sofa (the cushions are actually a mix of feather and memory foam), I was anticipating some very soft cushions, and was a little nervous about them being too soft. I had friends who warned me that feather cushions require constant fluffing, but I was pleasantly surprised to see how sturdy and comfy these couch cushions are.
The cushions on the sectional part of the sofa are especially plush and soft—my husband immediately declared that he was very much looking forward to lounging and napping with his feet up on the chaise. The material is soft and good quality, and while we haven’t had any major spills yet, the covers are removable, which offers peace of mind — knowing I can throw them in the washing machine if there’s a disaster and spot cleaning isn’t cutting it.
We’ve had our Feathers sectional for a few months now, and the comfort factor is just as high as it was the first day we got it. It looks beautiful in our living room, and the beige color brightens up the space a ton. The cushions do require a little bit of fluffing every now and then, but we knew that that was basically inevitable, knowing how soft this sofa was going to be. The Feathers Sectional is the kind of couch you sink and relax into, perfect for a Saturday afternoon nap, and we couldn’t be happier with it.

Last spring, Living Spaces launched its third designer collection. Drew + Jonathan comes from the twin siblings behind the HGTV series “Property Brothers” and has quickly become a hit for the home goods store.
“It’s just a really beautiful, contemporary, modern aesthetic,” says product manager Cynthia Diaz. With its sleek dressers and accent chairs that subtly recalls midcentury design, the brothers’ inaugural collection provides a look that’s distinct from the classic style of Nate + Jeremiah and Magnolia Homes’ modern farmhouse vibes.
That’s important at Living Spaces, where shoppers are searching by aesthetic as well as by furniture piece in stores and online. Post-pandemic, Diaz says, customers are now using the Living Spaces site as a research tool before coming into the store, where an overwhelming amount of the store’s sales take place.
“Every single customer is really educating themselves online first,” says Diaz. After the boom of home renovations during 2020 and 2021, the store has seen a return to its usual best sellers, upholstery and bedrooms, with a few changes.
The store’s custom upholstery program is incredibly popular with customers, as are the customizable sofas. Fortunately, Living Spaces has been able to maintain a four-to-six-week window for delivery time, where supply chain issues have brought about longer waits with other retailers. Right now, the most popular sofas are ones with plush seating.
“Comfort was something so important during the pandemic that has stayed,” says Diaz. “Even though they’re venturing out now, they want to come back and have something that’s really comfortable.”
Meanwhile, shoppers in the dining room department are now eyeing tables with extensions that will allow them to seat anywhere from eight to 12 people. “People are now ready to have big groups in their home and entertain,” says Diaz, and they’re turning to Living Spaces to do that.
Ashley Furniture’s eclectic stock caters to a variety of tastes. Whether you’re looking for a minimalist kitchen table, classic dining set, tech-forward sofa or a luxe upholstered bed, you’ll have a good chancing of finding it inside one of Ashley’s four Orange County stores or online.
Check out website tools like the 3D Room Planner to see what works before you make any big purchases. If you’re still not quite sure what you want in your home, Ashley has free, virtual design services available online. You let them know what style and room you have in mind, whether that’s a boho chic bedroom or an urban/industrial kitchen, the color and fabric families you prefer and a few other details.
An expert gets back to you with recommendations. You make your purchases and they’re delivered to you with a floor plan customized to fit your room.
Family-owned Daniel’s Home Center is a longtime go-to for appliances and furniture among Orange County residents. On the furniture front, the stock ranges from show-stopping headboards with hand-carved inlays and ornate dining room sets to chic, mid 20th century-inspired sofas and sectionals.
White glove delivery service options are available for an extra fee, but the Express Delivery, ensuring the speediest arrival of your purchase, is only available in select Orange County cities, including Anaheim, Tustin and Orange.
Same day warehouse pickups are available for orders placed before 4 p.m. on weekdays and purchases are generally available for pickup within 45 minutes. Look into financing options and note that your bills from Daniel’s can now be paid online.
Walker Furniture delivered new mattresses to Firehouse Station 8.
LAS VEGAS — Two of Top 100 retailer Walker Furniture’s philanthropic programs continued recently, as the Las Vegas-based retailer delivered mattresses to a local fire station and named its “Help for Heroes” recipients.
As part of “Project Firehouse: Rested & Ready,” Walker provided 13 mattresses and foundations to Firehouse Station 8, which houses the Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Hazmat team at 805 N. Mojave Road, on Sept. 14.
“For Walker, our ‘Rested & Ready’ firehouse project is our way of helping our first responders,” said Linda Alterwitz-Mizrahi, Walker Furniture co-owner. “We appreciate how our first responders are always on call and can only grab sleep in short intervals. They need to be rested to do their job helping others. The mattresses are our way of saying ‘thank you’.”
The mattresses being replaced are old, and Walker officials noted that the firefighters are always excited when the new ones arrive. They have the old ones stacked up and ready to go when the Walker Furniture truck arrives.
“We started this project with Clark County Firehouses in October 2018,” said Alterwitz-Mizrahi. “With interruption by the COVID-19 pandemic, deliveries took three-and-a-half years. Las Vegas Fire & Rescue is the second largest fire department in the state of Nevada, and we estimate deliveries will take more than a year. Each delivery takes careful planning.”
Help for Heroes
In addition, Walker Furniture held a ceremony and luncheon at the North Las Vegas Elks Lodge at 2939 Van Der Meer Street on Sept. 10 to announce this year’s U.S. Military veterans who are receiving furniture, some specialized, as part of Walker’s eighth annual “Help for Heroes” program. Deliveries will be specific to the needs of each recipient.
“The Help for Heroes’ program was created by Walker Furniture to help make day-to-day living a little easier for an often-overlooked segment of our community,” said Larry Alterwitz, Walker Furniture owner and CEO. “This year the program is providing some relief for 12 active military personnel and/or veterans.”
This year’s recipients were selected from letters written by family, friends and community partners and reviewed by Commander Robert Bencsko and American Legion Paradise Post 149. The vets and military will be receiving adjustable beds, motion sofas, motion recliners and lift chairs. John Mull’s Road Kill Grill provided the lunch to the veterans and their friends and families while the Las Vegas Rescue Mission donated food boxes to each recipient.

While we may believe our sweet pooch is perfectly trained or that our new puppy is too small to do any real damage, it's still good to do some research before ending up with a living room anchored by a hair-covered, expensive velvet mistake. Certain fabrics are too tempting to scratch, while particular furniture pieces can prove a safety hazard. To find out what types of furniture your four-legged friend is most likely to destroy, we consulted dog experts and design pros. Read on to learn what dog parents should avoid–and what choices are up to the task.
Though velvet upholstery, whether antique or modern in style, is a designer favorite, this plush fabric is a magnet for pet hair, is easily destroyed, and can be challenging to clean and repair. Many other luxe fabrics pose similar problems.
"Unquestionably, the worst textiles to have in your home if you have cats and dogs are silk, velvet, linen, suede, and tweed. In addition to being delicate and/or prone to snagging, most of these materials can't withstand water or the enzymatic cleaners that are typically suggested for cleaning up pet stains," explains Leonardo Gomez, CEO of Runball, a company that sells dog treats and toys.
Jen Stark, founder of Happy DIY Home, concurs. "Cleaning dog hair from furniture is one issue that arises when you have dogs. Avoid using materials like corduroy, mohair, velvet, or chenille that are prone to attracting pet hair." And when choosing a hue, keep the color of your pet in mind. You don't want to buy a black sofa if you have a fluffy white dog.
Opinions are divided on this popular sofa and armchair material. How it will work for you as a dog owner depends (as with marble countertops) on how much you like the "patina" the natural material gets with wear and tear.
Though it may wipe clean more easily than fabric, leather is no match for puppy nails and teeth. According to Daniel Cargill, co-founder of The Dog Tale, leather furniture comes with some basic instructions to keep it looking great, and these can be a challenge if you have a dog. "For example, you never want to get leather wet. Doing so can pull oils out of the leather and create splotches and stains that ruin that smooth, supple look. Now picture your dog coming in from the rain, after a romp in the morning dew, or after playing in the snow."
Cargill also notes that dogs' nails will inevitably scuff up the leather, which might be acceptable for some. "I'd encourage you to just view it as adding to the well-weathered look leather adopts over time," he says.
On the other hand, leather is fairly tough and can be a dream if you have a very hairy dog. "If your dog sheds a lot, you won't want a sofa that is hard to clean. Materials like leather and canvas work really well when it comes to cleaning up messes and removing unwanted fur," says Linda Simon, veterinary surgeon and consultant at FiveBarks.
Just like it's wise to avoid wearing white when eating a pasta dinner, you may want to skip light-colored fabrics if you're a dog owner. "Last year my wife bought a white bedspread," says Cargill. "We made the bed, stepped back, and looked at how bright and clean it made our bedroom look. Then our dog hopped up on the bed. We had recently taken him for a walk in the park, and he immediately stained the fabric with his paws. We tried to clean the dirty marks, but they just kept coming day after day."
Like your favorite white t-shirt, white fabrics can also yellow and fade over time, especially if you're constantly treating stains. Instead, choose darker tones like charcoal, olive, or, at the lightest, dark beige. You can also look for washable fabrics that are made to be thrown in the laundry.
And if all else fails, invest in a nice dog bed that you place adjacent to the couch, this way your dog can be comfortable and still be near you.
Dogs—especially teething puppies—love to chew. "Pups explore the world with their mouths," says Simon, which makes wooden table or chair legs prime chew toys. Metal or plastic are less desirable materials for your dog. Of course, wood can be impossible to avoid. In these cases, be sure you put out plenty of other chew-friendly toys or rawhides.
You've probably heard about toddler-level coffee tables being dangerous when children start walking. The same principle applies to dogs, though it's less about them hitting their heads and more about the messes that can ensue. "A glass of red wine will go flying onto the sofa or rug with one wag from a happy pup," says Reya Duenas of Reya Duenas Design.
Similarly, low drink stands can be problematic, as they're typically much lighter and balanced on one thin leg. Be sure these weigh enough to stay put and try to set them on an even floor, not a rug.
Look out for furniture with small or movable parts. Dogs may chew off or swallow them, which could lead to choking or intestinal blockages, according to Jeff Netzley, founder of Dog Training Near You. "This could include buttons, zippers, removable cushions, or decorative elements like tassels or beads." These decorative elements are also tempting to swat and play with, which could lead your dog to ruin a fun pillow or embellished curtain.ae0fcc31ae342fd3a1346ebb1f342fcb
This is less about your dog destroying the chair and more about how it can hurt them. Corinne Wigfall, veterinarian and spokesperson for online dog training resource SpiritDog Training, cautions dog owners that reclining armchair accidents are more common than most people realize. "As a veterinarian, I have seen many accidents where dogs (or kittens) have [had] limbs or a tail trapped in the metal workings of these chairs when the footstool is released, or crushed when placed back down or the chair reclined." Opt instead for a stand-alone ottoman or footrest that you can place in front of a stationary chair.
When in doubt, Jaquelyn Kennedy, canine behavioral specialist and founder of PetDT, suggests avoiding anything expensive or fragile. "When you have a dog, you should avoid having furniture that is overly expensive, fancy, or fragile. Even a highly trained dog will sometimes get excited and jump on the furniture, and this means that the furniture gets dirty, scratched, and sometimes even bitten!"
The U.S. furniture market is expected to record a value of US$288.9 billion in 2026, growing at a CAGR of 4.47%, for the time period of 2022-2026. Factors such as surge in the number of housing units, growth in millennial population, rising consumer spending on furniture, escalating penetration of social media and rapid urbanization would drive the growth of the market.
However, the market growth would be challenged by problem related to deforestation and rise in furniture rental. A few notable trends may include increasing furniture sales via ecommerce, rising adoption of augmented reality, increasing interest in eco-friendly furniture and demand for more flexible workspaces.
The rising demand for multifunctional furniture is expected to bolster the growth prospects of the furniture demand. As rooms are getting smaller, customers are increasingly looking for compact and easily movable furniture to allow for efficient use of the available space. To cater to such requirements, the vendor companies are innovating with new product and introducing multifunctional furniture with storage facilities, which is acting as a key trend in the U.S. furniture market.
In terms of companies, Costco, Williams-Sonoma, MillerKnoll, Steelcase, HNI Corporation and Ashley Furniture Industries are top players in the U.S. furniture market. However, with technological advancements and product innovations, mid-size to smaller companies are increasing their market presence by securing new contracts and tapping into new markets.

A set of leather Adirondack chairs, rice paper lamps, and an edition of Charles and Ray Eames’s Plywood Sculpture are among the handcrafted furnishings and decorations installed in and around the house and gardens of late landscape architect James Rose in Ridgewood, New Jersey, as part of the new exhibition At The Rose House. The show displays new designs by furniture and interiors studio Green River Project LLC alongside contemporary pieces from 20th-century designers including Eames, Nancy Holt, and Anne Truitt.
The installation is a collaborative endeavor between Green River Project LLC and Object & Thing. Objects on display take cues from the work and residence of Rose, with contributions from galleries and organizations such as Blum & Poe, Eames Office, Electronic Arts Intermix, Holt/Smithson Foundation, Lisson Gallery, Matthew Marks Gallery, and P.P.O.W.
Rose, a landscape architect and theorist born in rural Pennsylvania, completed a number of projects in and around North Jersey, where he resided, as well as in New York, Connecticut, California, and abroad. During World War II he was stationed in Japan; his time there greatly influenced his work and life. He not only became a Zen Buddhist, but integrated Japanese architecture practices into his work, many of which are visible at the residence he hand-built for himself in 1953, which today serves as The James Rose Center, a foundation and museum established by Rose before he died that’s dedicated to preserving his life and work.
Among the Japanese elements found within his residence and landscape is an admiration for wood, the use of sliding doors and shoji screens, and access to the outdoors. In line with Buddhist practices, Rose constructed the upper floor of his residence into a meditation space, which is currently under restoration by The James Rose Center.
Apparent in the design of his personal abode is the landscape architect’s disdain for waste. He often reused and repurposed building materials, notably converting doors into benches and refashioning railroad ties into garden fences.
“The ease in which Rose expanded the home using ready-made materials was an early point of reference for our practice,” Aaron Aujla, cofounder of Green River Project LLC, said in a statement. “Ben Bloomstein and I also started Green River Project LLC as a gallery in the barn of his family’s farm in upstate New York, so organizing this exhibition with [Object & Thing] was a great exercise that has brought us back to one of our original goals.”
Previous collaborations between Green River Project LLC and Object & Thing have brought similar stagings to the former homes of architect Gerald Luss and architect and industrial designer Eliot Noyes.
Designers and artists creating pieces for At The Rose House took to heart the ethos and ad hoc methods of the late landscape architect with their handcrafted designs and multimedia works. Among these installations are new pieces by designers working with Green River Project LLC, including rice paper lamps by Preziosi Lighting and a series of decorative wooden grooming essentials by Teague’s Path which line the bathroom shelving.
Other designers and artists contributing to the staged exhibition include clothing company Bode, which has designed attire similar to what Rose wore, a set of white leather Adirondack chairs by sculptor Hugh Hayden that contrast the dark-toned wood walls, a collection of dyed rice paper illustrations by Anne Truitt, and a 1943 edition of Plywood Sculpture by Eames Office on display for the first time in the United States.
To embody Rose’s regard for the union of nature and architecture, Pine Barrens, a 1975 film by Nancy Holt on the New Jersey landscape, plays on a loop from a television placed on top of makeshift cinderblock plinth, a design and use of object Rose most definitely would have approved. Several glass-blown flower vases line the cupboard shelves, alongside artwork and textiles on display that also harken to green landscapes.
“Rose was an impossible maverick, called by one author, ‘The James Dean of Landscape Architecture,’ but I think he would be very happy with the vision Green River Project LLC and Object & Thing have brought to his house and we look forward to welcoming new audiences throughout the exhibition,” Dean Cardasis, director of The James Rose Center, said in statement.
At The Rose House will be on view at The James Rose Center in Ridgewood, New Jersey, until October 2, 2022. More information on the house and exhibition can be found here.
