Best Buy is bringing its new outdoor furniture store Yardbird to Texas.

The consumer electronics chain paid $85 million for the furniture retailer in November to expand its outdoor living merchandise beyond TVs and audio systems for patios.

Best Buy is selling Yardbird furniture online and will open a 4,000-square-foot store in Frisco in a shopping center that already has a Best Buy store later this month. The store is across from Nordstrom Rack and Macy’s Backstage in the Preston Ridge shopping center, which is just north of Stonebriar Centre mall.

Two other Yardbird stores opened in the state this summer, one each in Houston and Austin. The Yardbird chain has grown from nine stores six months ago to 16 locations.

More are in the works, said Jay Dillon, who founded Yardbird in 2016 with his father, Bob Dillon, initially as an online retailer based in Minnesota, where Best Buy is also headquartered.

“Texas was on our radar with its population growth and climate. It’s one of the top three markets for patio furniture in the U.S.,” Dillon said. Yardbird designs its furniture and works directly with manufacturers to make sofas, chairs, love seats, dining sets, side tables and fire tables. The furniture comes in aluminum, teak wood and wicker that’s made from materials that include recycled ocean plastic.

Best Buy has said it wants to offer a total package to consumers in the $30 billion-a-year outdoor living market. The retailer already installs televisions in backyards as homeowners create elaborate outdoor kitchen and entertainment spaces. Last year, Best Buy started selling outdoor grill brands Traeger, Weber and Bromic.

“When we couple that assortment with our home consultants and the physical and digital experiences that we’ve developed for customers, this is a really, really fast-moving category that has the ability to grow,” Jason Bonfig, Best Buy’s chief merchandising officer, told investors in March.

Outdoor living is one of three new product categories that Best Buy has started selling beyond its core categories of consumer electronics and kitchen and laundry appliances.

It also sells fitness and wellness equipment, which includes beauty and gadgets, and what it calls “personal electronic transportation,” or e-bikes, scooters and accessories, online and in select stores. The local Best Buy stores with the new, broader selection are in Arlington, Irving, Garland, Lake Worth and two stores in Fort Worth near Hulen Mall and Heritage Trace Parkway.

Best Buy made another big purchase last year, paying $400 million for Current Health, an at-home technology platform for remote patient monitoring and telehealth.

As Best Buy diversifies its mix for the long term, it’s noticing a recent shift in consumer spending.

Last week, Best Buy joined Walmart and Target in saying the consumer demand is showing weakness due to inflation. Best Buy also noted that this year’s results are compared to last year, when federal stimulus money led to strong spending on consumer electronics. Best Buy cut its forecast for its second quarter that ended Saturday and for the full year, saying same-store sales will decline 13% and 11%, respectively.

The retailer is scheduled to report its fiscal second-quarter results on Aug. 30.
