Rod Wood: ‘We are committed to being better’ - The Morning Sun

The Detroit Lions finished the 2021 season with the second-worst record in the NFL.

As a result, fan attendance at Ford Field has been sagging over the past few years.

While fans continue to be as rabid and engaged as ever online, spending hard-earned dollars on a franchise that perpetually disappoints sometimes feels fruitless.

Team president Rod Wood sent an email to season-ticket holders on Thursday to provide an update and to acknowledge where the Lions are as an organization.

“As we prepare for the 2022-23 season, I want to acknowledge where we are as an organization,” Wood shared. “We understand that our results last season weren’t good enough and I speak for everyone at the Lions when I tell you that we are committed to being better on and off the field.”

Admittedly, the team decided prior to the start of head coach Dan Campbell’s first season in Detroit to field a younger team.

While the results in terms of wins and losses were not satisfactory, the coaching staff and front office believe a good foundation has been established, and more importantly, the culture has started to change inside the locker room.

“Look, I love how the season ended, but the reality is we won three games, and that’s not good enough and it never will be,” general manager Brad Holmes told reporters at the end of the 2021 season.

“Dan Campbell and I we’re aligned in a vision and a plan, and from the very get go the big part of this plan was player development. What we are totally aligned with is we’re going to let these guys play,” Holmes continued. “You guys have heard me talk about it. We’re going to let these guys play.”

While the work still needs to be done to retool the roster, building a culture of collaboration and inclusion will serve to aid Wood and Co. in their pursuit of moving their way up the NFC North rankings.

“The last year has confirmed for the entire organization that we have the right people in place to achieve our goal of creating sustained success in Detroit,” Wood explained. “The work that Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell have done to create a plan for the future of this team, is evident every day in our building. The work we did this year to establish a culture of collaboration, grit and resilience will serve as a foundation for where we are headed.”
