College Corner: Lehigh’s Wood improves to 16-1 - The Mercury

Wrestling

Jordan Wood (Gilbertsville/Boyertown) >> The Lehigh University senior improved to 16-1 this season with a pair of victory in the Mountain Hawks’ losses to Penn and Army, on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

Wood scored the only bonus point win of the night for either side Friday, earning an 11-3 major over Penn’s Ben Golden at 285. He totaled four takedowns, including three in the second period.

In Sunday’s match with Army, Wood earned a 6-0 decision over Brandon Phillips as a heavyweight. Wood scored takedowns in each of the final two periods for the 89th victory of the season. Former Bear Eli Jones, a Lehigh senior, earned a 7-4 decision at 197 in an extra match against Army.

Brandon Meredith (Limerick/Spring-Ford) >> The Spring-Ford redshirt-senior and the No. 1 Nittany Lions (16-0, 8-0 Big 10) claimed the conference’s regular-season title with a 21-13 win over No. 7 Nebraska on Sunday.

Meredith didn’t score in the clinching win, but he used a late takedown to beat Edwin Thomsen 7-6 at 133 in an extra match. He is 5-5 this season.

Matt Wilde (Boyertown/Boyertown) >> The senior produced wins for Kutztown University during recent PSAC matches with Gannon and Mercyhurst universities. The 11th-ranked Golden Bears were edged in both outings, 21-18 by Gannon — their first loss of the season — and Mercyhurst 19-16.

Wilde got Kutztown (3-2 PSAC, 8-2 overall) overcame deficits of 3-0 and 4-2 at 125 to secure a thrilling 5-4 win over Jacob Dunlop with a takedown in the final seconds of the third period. In the Mercyhurst match, he accounted for Kutztown’s only bonus points of the day when he posted an 18-9 major decision for his team-leading 18th win of the season. The Boyertown product was a takedown machine, registering eight, including three big ones in the third period to push the score into major territory.

Dan Mancini (Pottstown/Owen J. Roberts) >> The University of Pittsburgh redshirt-sophomore earned his first dual meet victory of the season with a 3-1 decision at 149 in the No. 19 Panthers’ 30-5 win over Columbia.

Men’s basketball

Erik Timko (Audubon/Methacton) >> The Jefferson University freshman continued his terrific debut season with his second Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Week honors. He was also named the CACC Rookie of the Week for the seventh time.

Timko averaged 27.5 points per game on 69 percent shooting in the Rams’ 2-0 week. He tallied 32 points to lead Jefferson in dealing Post its first conference loss in blowout fashion (98-70). The rookie also tallied 23 points in the Rams’ win over Georgian Court. Timko added seven assists, five rebounds, two steals, and one block in the two games.

Chris Arcidiacono (Perkiomen School) >> The Villanova junior guard scored a career-high nine points in the Wildcats’ 85-74 over UConn on Saturday. Arcidiacono, who saw 26 minutes in the win, could be in line for an increased role this upcoming week with fellow guards Justin Moore and Collin Gillespie both dealing with injuries.

Manny Clark (Pottsgrove/Pottsgrove) >> The Gwynedd Mercy sophomore finished with a season-high 25 points with an efficient 10-of-12 (.833) shooting performance that came with five rebounds, an assist, and two steals in his team’s 68-55 win over Cabrini on Saturday.

Justin Green (Collegeville/Pope John Paul II) >> The Catholic University freshman had his first career double-double in Saturday win over Drew University.

Green scored a season-high 13 points to go along with 11 rebounds in the 73-71 victory.  He is averaging 3.2 points and 5.6 rebounds (second on the team) per game in 18 contests this season, including 10 starts.

Vince Zulli (Schwenksville/Perkiomen Valley) >> The senior was high scorer for Penn State-Brandywine when it wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 99-49 loss to NCAA Division II West Chester University on Friday night.

Zulli led the scoring effort for the Lions with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting. He also headed Brandywine with three assists.

Women’s swimming

Gracie McKee (Boyertown/Boyertown) >> The junior was a multi-event high finisher for Kutztown University in the course of Saturday’s ESU Invitational with East Stroudsburg, Millersville and Lehigh.

McKee finished sixth in the 100 breast (1:13.37) and fourth in the 500 free (5:33.76 ) during the unscored competition.

Men’s indoor track

Anthony DeFusco (Douglassville/Daniel Boone) >> The Kutztown University star hit qualifying marks with his team in the Deschriver Invitational hosted this past Saturday by East Stroudsburg University,

DeFusco went 22-3 3/4 in the long jump and 44-5 1/2 in the triple jump during the meet. Both qualify him for the upcoming Pennsylvania State Atheltic Conference (PSAC) meet.
