There’s a new law going into effect in October that aims to reduce greenhouse emissions. Written in the law is a plan to reduce wood consumption by 40%. The plan is to do that with more efficient wood-burning stoves, ‘as well as increasing electrification of primary heating across all fuel types over time.' Countryside Stoves President Steve Chruscicki says the new law only creates bigger problems.
"Now you’re just burning that electricity up, and you see in the summer we have a shortage of power. Now we’re going to have a shortage of power in the winter because everybody’s going to have electric heat, electric fireplaces, and the cost is going to be astronomical….and you’re still going to get the emissions to make the electricity. It doesn’t make sense," he said.
The reduction in wood consumption likely led people to believe this would be a wood ban. Not true. Steve agrees with the idea of more efficient wood-burning stoves, but says the cost of development will be passed down to the consumer.
"The Federal Government, they came out with this year, a tax credit where you get 26% back on a new efficient wood stove or pellet stove. If there was talk of banning them they wouldn’t be giving you tax credits to get a clean one," he said.
As part of a clean-air initiative, former Mayor Bill DeBlasio announced in 2014 that the construction of new wood-burning fireplaces would be banned in New York City. So the burning question on the minds of woodstove owners: will the ban make its way upstate?
"Will it happen up here? I doubt it. They’ve been trying to do it for 40 years," said Chruscicki. "Too many people rely on wood as a resource to heat, to save on their oil or propane."
