St. Clair Shores to continue investigating furniture for pier project - C&G Newspapers

ST. CLAIR SHORES — City Council is continuing to debate what furniture should be purchased for the pier project being constructed at Blossom Heath Park.

When the bid was awarded for construction of the pier to EC Korneffel, city officials thought the price being quoted for the furniture to be included in the new pier was too high. Community Development and Inspection Director Chris Rayes said the contractor allowed the city to get pricing on its own for the furniture, and the city did so, receiving a purchase offer from Landscape Forms directly using a government bid for $199,444, resulting in a savings of $166,549 from the amount that had been quoted by EC Korneffel for the same products.

Although that price does not include installation, as the EC Korneffel price would have, Rayes said it would not cost the entire amount of the difference to have the furniture installed, and the city would seek another contractor to provide that service.

At the Nov. 15 meeting when the matter was discussed, however, Councilman John Caron questioned why there had not been any discussion of what furniture would be purchased prior to putting the matter out to bid.

From the documents provided to City Council members, he said, it was difficult to tell what the furniture would actually look like, but from what he could tell, “they don’t fit with anything else that we have in the city.”

“We want to have our own image as a city,” he continued. “(We) don’t want to have something totally unique out on the pier that doesn’t match anything else. I think it’s prudent to have more options sent out to what type of furniture this is ... before we commit to buying this furniture.”

He said the furniture should have a cohesive look with what is currently at and planned for the remainder of Blossom Heath Park.

Councilwoman Candice Rusie concurred.

“The cost savings is so dramatic on this. Maybe we can look for different pieces of furniture,” she said. “Something with a common theming element.”

Rayes said he had the ability to get pricing on the furniture that was recently purchased for Blossom Heath and could bring that information back to City Council.

Mayor Kip Walby said he would direct the council members that were on the Playground Committee, Rusie and Councilman Ron Frederick, along with Caron, to look into the furniture options and bring suggestions back to the full council at a future date.

Rusie said the committee could send some information out to the remainder of City Council as it receives it, as well.

“I just want to make sure everyone is kept in the loop,” she said.

The matter was tabled Nov. 15 pending a further review of other options by the committee.
