Nearly 60 Amish farmers pitched in to build a new furniture workshop on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021, after the one at 1002 Route 67 in Palatine was damaged by a fire on Tuesday evening.

PALATINE — An Amish furniture workshop was badly damaged by a Tuesday night fire, but not before workers were able to remove much of their craftwork by hand, officials said.

The structure fire at 1002 Route 67 was called in by a passerby around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, according to Wayne Ropeter Jr., first assistant for the Ephratah Volunteer Fire Department.

The fire was fully involved with flames visible on the exterior of the structure along the eaves of the building and reaching around the sides when firefighters arrived, Ropeter said.

Assistance from area fire departments with tanker trucks was requested to the scene to ensure an adequate supply of water and manpower to battle the blaze.

Fire crews used hand lines to quickly knock down the flames and bring the fire under control, Ropeter said.

Workers present at the furniture shop when the fire broke out were able to safely exit the structure on their own and had removed many of their handcrafted goods from the building by the time firefighters arrived.

There were no injuries reported among first responders. The scene was cleared around 7 p.m.

Nearly 60 members of the Amish community were seen at the property raising a new workshop on the site of the fire damaged building on Wednesday.

Although the cause of the fire is currently under investigation, Ropeter indicated it appeared to have started in an outbuilding where a diesel engine used to operate equipment in the workshop was located.

The Ephratah Volunteer Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the St. Johnsville Fire Department, Rockwood-Garoga-Lassellsville Volunteer Fire Company, Fort Plain Fire Department and Canajoharie Volunteer Fire Department.
