Wood City Riders work with residents to address trail concerns - Pine Journal

Wood City Riders President Chris Rokke told the Thomson Township Board of Supervisors he had a solution to resident concerns about a snowmobile trail crossing at the board's Thursday, Nov. 4 meeting.

At the previous township board meeting, Drew and Athena Burkholder expressed their concerns with the proposed trail route, which would have crossed in front of their driveway where their children wait for the school bus in the morning.

The trail had been set to cross from the east side of Maki Road to the west side, right in front of the Burkholder’s driveway. The crossing was necessary because the east side right-of-way would not have been safe for snowmobilers.

Rokke said he has been working with the Burkholders and with his team to figure out a solution that would be safest for all. Wood City Riders plans to remove dirt on the east side right-of-way to level the area so it is safe for snowmobile riders.

“In an effort to work with landowners as best we can that has been our ultimate goal,” he said.

Rokke said the cost of working on the right-of-way to make the landowners happy was a concession he was willing to make.

“In the grand scheme of things a couple thousand dollars worth of dirt work, or whatever the number is, it solves their concerns with the trail,” he said. “In our world that is a reasonable kind of thing to do.”

However, Rokke did ask for assistance from the township to move the dirt that will be excavated. He had already spoken to the township road and utility maintenance department who were willing to help, but wanted board approval first.

The board gave the go-ahead to help with the project, which Rokke said is at most going to be a half-day job.

Rokke also told the board the club had begun construction on the Highway 61 right-of-way for the trail, and is about a third of the way complete.
