HIGH POINT — America’s furniture exports to other nations are back above water. Total export numbers hit $1.15 billion in the first half of 2021, a 40% rise over 2020’s pandemic numbers and putting it ahead of pre-pandemic 2019.
Shipments to Canada, the far-and-away top market for U.S.-made furniture and bedding, rose 20% over 2020 to $6.42 million. That number represents more than half of all U.S. furniture exports.
Mexico came in next with $52.5 million, followed by the United Kingdom, South Korea, the Bahamas, Germany, Australia, Japan, Saudi Arabia and, finally, China.
South Korea continues to import less from the U.S. Numbers dipped 17% from 2020, which in turn fell 17% from 2019. Saudi Arabia is in a similar position, importing just $10.7 million worth of U.S. furniture in the first half of 2021, a 28% decline over 2020. It also continues to fall, with numbers still declining from 2019.
The most distinguished increase is Germany, which imported $13.3 million in U.S. furniture in the first half of the year, a 53% increase over 2020.
China, once a top 10 shoo-in, continues to import less American-made furniture. It imported just $10.4 million in U.S. furniture in the first half of 2021, a far cry from the $26.9 million it hit in 2019. This likely is at least partially due to the retaliatory tariffs China placed on some U.S.-made furniture, which are still in effect.
