Colton Wood tossed four touchdown passes, including three in the second quarter, to lead Faith Academy to a dramatic 40-33 over Central-Clay County Friday night at Rams Stadium in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs.

Christian Burnette scored the go-ahead touchdown on an 80-yard run with 3:01 remaining to give the Rams the victory.

“What a fantastic ball game it was,” Faith coach Jack French said. “It came down to the wire tonight for sure.”

Central was stopped on fourth-and-5 with a 1:06 remaining as a halfback pass fell just short of quarterback Clayton Yates.

Terry Heflin scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter as the Volunteers took a 33-26 with 7:20 remaining. Burnette answered with a pair of touchdowns less than two minutes apart to put Faith Academy into the third round of the playoffs.

“We knew what we had to do to advance to the next round,” Burnette said. “Coaches kept us motivated, and we stuck together.”

Burnette finished with 155 yards rushing, 112 yards receiving and three TDs.

Star of the game: Wood passed for 345 yards and 4 touchdowns, connecting with Ty Goodwill for 27 and 28 yards, Dorian Smith for 53 yards and Burnette for 85 on the game’s longest play.

“Tonight, honestly, I just took what the defense gave us,” Wood said. “Early in the game, they stacked the box on us. They kind of overpowered us. We just made the decision to open up the passing games, and it no doubt worked.”

Play of the game: None bigger than Burnette’s 80-yard run for the winning TD. The Rams got the ball at the 20 after a Volunteer punt. Burnette took the hand off and only used 13 seconds on the clock to give the Rams the lead.

“Once my blockers got to their man, the defense had holes in it and I just took advantage of it,” he said.

Stat sheet: Heflin was the Volunteers workhorse in the backfield with 34 carries for 246 yards. Heflin carried the ball 22 of the Vols’ 34 attempts in the second half. Elisha McNeil, the other 1-2 punch in the backfield for the Vols, rushed for 109 yards and pair of touchdowns on 10 carries. Central-Clay only completed 2 passes.

Dorian Smith had 92 yards receiving and Ty Goodwill 86 yards for the Rams offense.

By the numbers: (5) missed extra points in the game. (0) turnovers. (4) wins in a row for the Rams after being 3-4 on season.

Coachspeak: “I just reminded them we’ve been in this situation before. This time, we handled it a little better. Colton was ready tonight. He played outstanding along with many other guys.” – French.

They said it: “We knew at halftime, up 19-6, we were going to be in a battle, and I constantly remind my team about the UMS game earlier in the year, and we couldn’t let that happen again.” -- Wood

Next week: Faith Academy (7-4) hosts No. 1 Pike Road in the quarterfinals.
