The Will C. Wood High football team rode the legs of running back and senior Jayjay Olaes on Friday on Homecoming night.

Olaes rushed for 193 yards on a whopping 38 carries and scored three times as the Wildcats held off Rodriguez 33-25 at Wildcat Stadium. Olaes had a 20-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter to help ice the win.

The Wildcats have won five of six games after losing the season opener to Pioneer. They are now 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the Monticello Empire League. They handed the Mustangs their first defeat in the process.

Wood led 3-0 after a quarter, 9-7 at halftime and 19-16 after three quarters.

“We made some adjustments with our blocking schemes but the big thing was — we believed in what we were doing,” said Wood head coach Jacob Wright about the fourth quarter.

Krishna Clay had a big game with two catches for 40 yards and a touchdown and he connected on field goals from 32 and 48 yards. He had 2.5 sacks and 3.5 tackles for a loss.

Quarterback Ken Tilford was 4-for-11 for 54 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Wright acknowledged that Tilford was still banged up from last week’s game against Vanden.

“We were evaluating his injury every day. He definitely wasn’t 100 percent,” Wright said. “He’s a really tough kid, but we didn’t see that really explosive, game-changing speed from him this week.”

Warren Soli led Wood with nine tackles and a blocked field goal.  Jacob Emerson had an interception and the Wildcats recovered fumbles from Camren Intermesoli, John James and Armaan Nagra. Jarren Ford and Nagra both had seven tackles.

“We gave up two really big plays but for the most part, our coverage was really good all night,” Wright said.

One of those big plays was Rodriguez quarterback Miles Meadows’ 75-yard touchdown pass to Jamoryon Johnson. That cut Wood’s lead to 9-7 at one point.

The Mustangs dropped to 6-1 overall, 1-1 in the MEL.

The score

Wood 33, Rodriguez 25

Next games: Friday, Wood at Armijo, Rodriguez at Fairfield: 7 p.m.
