WASHINGTON — While furniture and home furnishings sales rose slightly in September, it was one of the weaker performers in an overall forgettable month, according to the Department of Commerce’s advance monthly report on retail sales.

The category’s month-over-month performance rose 0.2% over August, with $12.298 billion vs. $12.273 billion a month ago. The year-over-year trend continued to show double-digit gains, as the month’s figure was 13.4% better than September 2020’s revised $10.843 billion.

Through the first nine months of the year, furniture and home furnishings stores have posted $107.1 billion in sales.

As a whole, the U.S. retail snapshot showed a 0.7% gain in September, to $625.42 billion compared with $620.85 billion in August. For the year, the entire retail universe is up 13.9% compared with September 2020’s revised $548.86 billion.

Sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument and bookstores were the strongest performer for the month, climbing 3.7% over August’s figures, while general merchandise (up 2%), miscellaneous store retail and gas stations (up 1.8% each), and clothing and clothing accessories stores (up 1.1%) also posted sharper increases than the overall showing.

For September, health and personal care stores (down 1.4%) and electronics and appliance stores (down 0.9%) were the only categories to report worse performances compared with August.

The DOC’s advance estimates are based on a sub-sample of the U.S. Census Bureau’s full retail and food services sample. A stratified random sampling method is used to select approximately 5,500 retail and food services firms whose sales are then weighted and benchmarked to represent the complete universe of more than 3 million retail and food services firms.
