Martha Dean Adams Wood
Martha Dean Adams Wood, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend, departed this world in peace at home in Weatherford, Texas on September 12, 2021 at age 91. She has joined her siblings, Frances Adams, Robert Adams, Mary Adams and Marcia Adams Miller.
Born to Erna & Maud Adams of Cerro Gordo, Illinois on October 18, 1929 she was three months premature (weighing only 1 lb. 8 oz.) and was incubated on the oven door of the kitchen stove.
In 1949, she met her husband Marvin Lloyd Wood of Eau Galle, Wisconsin at a USO dance in Chanute, Illinois where he stated that night that she was the girl he was going to marry. The course of her life was set. They married 6 weeks later and have been together for 71 years. They had 4 children: Katherine, Joyce, Marvin and David.
She was a clarinet player and loved the music of Artie Shaw and the religious songs sung by Elvis Presley. Martha loved her family in Cerro Gordo but ventured out into the world as a military wife at age 20 and never looked back.
We raise her up as a living example of grace. From the circumstances of her birth to the health challenges of some of her children to managing her own health struggles ... they all highlighted her example, never complaining and always making the best of things as they were put before her. Who could ask for a better role model?
Martha is survived by her loving husband of 71 years, Marvin Lloyd Wood; her children, Katherine Goodman, Joyce (Danny) Griffiths, Marvin (Hye Kyong) Wood and David (Patsy) Wood; grandchildren, Heather Kowis (Bryon) of New Caney, Texas, Carolyn Basinger (Shawn) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Alex Gordy (Jennifer) of Denver, Colorado, David Wood Jr. (Tiphanie) of Norman, Oklahoma, Henry Wood (Lindsey) of Weatherford, Texas, Hollie Wood of Weatherford, Texas, Amanda Dulaney (Jake) of Graham, Texas, Marvin Wood III (Abby) of Seattle, Washington, James Wood of Weatherford, Texas, Michael Wood of Sacheon, Republic of South Korea, and Tyler (Alex) Davis of Weatherford, Texas; great-grandchildren, Alan Rock, Layne and Levi Kowis, Ethan and Luke Basinger, Anastasia and Isabella and John Griffiths, Rafal Zawiazalec, Chloe Wood, Bentley and Justin Dulaney, Kimberlyn Wood, Preston and Emma Thomas.
A long-standing member of the United Christian Church in Taylor, Texas she treasured and received sustenance from her faith, friends and many other family members who will sadly miss her.
Many thanks to the family and friends who participated in "walking her home". Whether you were with her in person or through thoughts and prayers it is very appreciated. Final arrangements have been made with White's Funeral Home in Weatherford, Texas and Martha's wishes were to not have a funeral service but for each person who knew her to remember a time with her that makes them smile. With family spread around the globe, a celebration of life will take place at a future date.
Martha was an avid supporter of Marion Medical Mission whose mission is to provide fresh water wells to villages in Africa. Donations, in lieu of flowers can be made to Marion Medical Mission (www.mmmwater.org), Smile Train (www.smiletrain.org) or to St. Jude (www.stjude.org) in Martha's name.
