LISBON — Winthrop’s Lauryn Wood didn’t have a favorite goal Friday afternoon. She said she enjoyed them all.

Wood scored five goals in the Ramblers’ 10-0 field hockey victory over Lisbon.

“I think I was in the right spot at the right time,” Wood said.

The Greyhounds (0-1-1) were coming off a double-overtime 1-1 tie against Spruce Mountain earlier this week, and they still recovering from that game.

“We are thin numbers-wise, we played a double-overtime game against another quality team on Wednesday,” Lisbon coach Julie Petrie said. “We are tired and I think when got down on ourselves. Winthrop is a phenomenal team — once they started scoring we got in trouble.”

Winthrop’s offense found its groove in the second quarter.

“Once we get one, we normally start to click and we get (excited),” Wood said.

Julia Letourneau put the Ramblers up 1-0 in the first minute in the second quarter. Wood then scored to extend the lead to 2-0 four minutes later.

Winthrop coach Sharon Coulton said that she reminded the team of a few things after the first quarter.

“It primarily was to continue to move, and we need to support each other,” Coulton said. “In the first quarter, we had a few people carry the ball down (the field) and they didn’t have someone close enough when the ball got poked away by Lisbon. I think they were more attentive to that, and sending the ball across the circle is something we needed to do against (Lisbon goalie Maria Levesque).”

The goals started to come in bunches for Winthrop (2-0). Madeline Wagner scored with six minutes remaining in the second quarter, and Wood added two straight goals to push the Ramblers’ advantage to 5-0.

Isabella Littler recorded assists on three of Winthrop’s first four goals.

With one minute remaining in the second quarter, Izzy Folsom ripped a shot past Levesque to make Winthrop’s lead 6-0.

Wagner and Wood scored again for the Ramblers to extend the gap to 8-0 in the third quarter.

Emma Shuman added a goal in the fourth quarter and Wood scored her fourth to cap the scoring for the Ramblers.

Maria Levesque’s effort in goal kept Lisbon in the game in the first quarter. She stopped a penalty stroke early in the first and followed that with six more saves in the quarter, which ended in a scoreless tie.

Levesque made two other saves in the game on a penalty stroke.

“When we work as a unit, we have a really good defense,” Petrie said. “Maria made some great saves, but we stopped talking, we stopped cutting (to the ball), and we stopped working together. And that didn’t go so well.”
