City Furniture was recognized by NAFA Fleet Management Assn. for having the No. 1 green fleet in America.

TAMARAC, Fla. — As it continues its push toward being carbon neutral by 2040, Top 100 retailer City Furniture has racked up the accolades for its efforts.

When Furniture Today celebrated the 40th anniversary of its Top 100 list, the Tamarac, Fla.-based retailer was recognized with the Going Green award.

More recently, its fleet was ranked No. 1 nationwide by NAFA Fleet Management Assn. for green initiatives, tying with the City Furniture and County of Denver in the top spot. A year ago, City Furniture was ranked No. 24. So how did it make the 23-position jump?

“We eliminated all diesel fuel vehicles, and we’re 100% green this year in our fleet,” said Dave Clevenger, vice president of operations, fleet and distribution center management, noting that all of the company’s 207 delivery and transfer vehicles run on either compressed natural gas or electricity.

Not only is its fleet running on alternative fuel sources, City opened and commenced construction on brand new CNG stations at all of its distribution centers across the Florida, improved fleet maintenance across the board with a best in class readiness rate of 97% and collaborated with Peterbilt to develop a dedicated CNG-fueled medium duty delivery truck.

Clevenger added that the retailer has outfitted some of its showrooms with solar panels (with plans for solar capabilities on its Tampa-area distribution center) and it recycles more than 90% of waste that comes into its facilities. “We have two recycling facilities in our Tamarac facility, one in Ocoee, one in Miami Gardens and two that are planned for Plant City,” he said.

Clevenger said in the early 2010s, City Furniture’s owners, the Koenig family, charged him with finding ways to make the brand a better steward of its environment. He said they’ve backed him at every turn as the retailer presses toward its goal of being carbon neutral by 2040.

“The strides that the Koenig family and City Furniture have put forth is amazing. I go out there and find the resources, but it’s their initiatives, striving and pushing that we’ll have this accomplished way before 2040,” he said.

Andrew Koenig, president of City Furniture, said by being a greener company, the retailer is deepening its commitment to the region and its shoppers have taken notice.

“It’s so important. It’s foundational. For the past decade or 20 years or so, we know our consumer wants us to be a good, green-oriented company,” Koenig said. “It’s critical to get to our ultimate goal of being carbon neutral. Having a green fleet and using renewable energy is so critical to the brand, the associates. A lot of customers are referencing that they love doing business with us because we’re a green company.”
