The Will C. Wood High football team dropped its season opener to host Pioneer, 39-0, Friday during a nonleague game in Woodland.
“We played well against the run but gave up some big plays,” said Wildcats head coach Jacob Wright. “We need to clean up some stuff coverage-wise but this is a transitional period running a new offense and defense. I thought the energy was there.”
Wood lost the ball on two interceptions and a fumble. Pioneer led 19-0 at halftime.
Defensively, Krtishna Clay and Jarren Ford both had eight tackles. Jacob Emerson and Armaan Nagra both had seven tackles.
Pioneer quarterback Ajay Lucero threw for 168 yards and three touchdowns and Jack Carner finished the game with 123 yards rushing.
Wood (0-1) is at Casa Roble next Friday.
