(Aug. 3, 2021) It took Nantucket firefighters nearly six hours Tuesday afternoon to put out a blaze that engulfed a wood shop on Tom Nevers Road, causing more than $250,000 in damage.

The Nantucket Fire Department received a report just after noon of a possible brush fire and was on the scene less than 10 minutes later.

The building, at 6A Tom Nevers Road near the intersection of Milestone Road, was used as a wood shop and storage unit.

The cause of the fire is believed to be an electrical malfunction. After carpentry workers tried putting it out with a fire extinguisher, they realized the fire had grown too large and called 911, fire chief Steve Murphy said.

Everyone was able to safely evacuate the building and no injuries were reported.

“As soon as we arrived there was fire throughout 100 percent of the building,” Murphy said. “The first two engines used their water but couldn’t knock down the fire. We had a large stream of water toward the front of the building and a secondary stream toward the back to stop any potential exposures with the brush.”

The area doesn't have any fire hydrants so Murphy called in two tanker trucks as reinforcements. They began to shuttle back and forth from Sconset, refilling with water until the fire was contained.

“We were successful at stopping the fire from expanding through to the brush but we couldn’t stop it from spreading through the building,” Murphy said. “The first couple tanks of water we got were unable to stop it so we set up a drafting operation and kept shuttling water back and forth from Sconset until we felt like we had a good handle on the fire and were able to stop it.”

It took firefighters about two hours to knock down the blaze. A crew  remained on the scene until after 6 p.m. identifying and cooling down the remaining hot spots. Three engines, including the department’s ladder truck, and an ambulance were dispatched to the fire.

Seventeen firefighters, including three off-duty members of the department, responded to the blaze.

The property is owned by William and Kimberly Zeoli, according to town assessor’s records.
