Twenty-one years ago my wife and I purchased a farmhouse on 11 acres on Virginia’s Rappahannock River where it flows into the Chesapeake Bay.
From our beach, the river is almost four miles across, and you can look out into the bay. The property has a pond and a large cinder block barn. The wildlife is amazing, with heron, eagles, deer, turkeys, turtles and, of course, great fishing. There is a 140-foot-long bridge that goes over the pond so you drive the golf cart out to our 150-square-foot “tiki hut” on the beach. Our immediate family has loved our times there, and so have other friends and family. And it is only a 90-minute drive from home.
My theory is that you purchase a vacation home so you can get your kids and grandkids to come visit, and everyone stays together for a few days under the same roof. Add some toys like boats, kayaks, a pool table and a PAC-man machine, and everyone is entertained and looks forward to Deltaville.
Now, 21 years later, it pains me to say we are selling it. Circumstances change, and we don’t go there as often. Our kids live nearby so we don’t need to entice them back home, our grandkids are too young to really enjoy it yet, and demand for water front property has exploded, especially if it has acreage and privacy.
It has been a challenging decision, but now comes the tough part: what to do with 2,200 square feet of furnishings. Some is beach-style furniture, but other stuff is accumulated treasures from our years enjoying the place.
Homes are selling at a brisk pace, the best in years, but we still don’t have an orderly and efficient way to divest ourselves of older furniture so we can buy new. Imagine if there was no used car market and you could not receive any value for your current jalopy.
We have discussing this for 50 years, by the way.
