VANCOUVER, British Columbia — The growth rate for Article, a digitally native furniture e-tailer, hasn’t slowed since the start of the pandemic. In fact, the company just delivered its 1 millionth order.
This May Article also experienced its biggest sales month since its founding in 2013, and it has tripled the number of its design team members since the beginning of 2020.
“We are continuing to push our unified view of the customer experience and invest in our own delivery network,” said Duncan Blair, Article vice president of marketing. “Right now, we are the only vertically integrated brand to have its own delivery network which gives us a key point of difference.”
To give an idea of the amount of delivery growth, out of its total 1 million deliveries, 400,000 of them took place in 2020 alone. Blair said the delivery teams are expanding to new markets, and the company is in the process of adding new distribution centers to service them.
“Nothing ruins a sofa purchase more than a driver showing up late, being rude or worse, damaging property,” he added. “This is damaging to the relationship, and over time people won’t purchase since they will tell their friends and family about their poor experience. So, it’s important for us to control the entire process.”
Blair went on to say the company is investing in several areas besides delivery and its design team, such as investing in its product and improving the e-commerce shopping experience.
“We firmly believe that we can build a superior experience that is e-commerce-only by improving the layout and design of the website and adding more user-generated content,” Blair said. “We love when customers share stories and images about their experience with our product from their own space.”
The user-generated content has been a big selling point for Article, according to Blair, who said that potential customers can see Article’s product in modern, traditional and transitional environments in real people’s homes. “This offers them a better idea of the product than seeing it in a staged environment in a showroom,” he said.
The company is also investing in finding better quality raw materials and in shortening its supply chain.
“We are very optimistic about the future,” Blair added. “With more people working from home they can move to wherever, and they generally have more space and need more furniture. That’s a good dynamic for us.”
