MIDDLEBURY — V. Jeanne (Hoyt) Wood of Middlebury died peacefully on June 24, 2021, at age 90. Jeanne was born Aug. 17, 1930, second child to Ernest and Irma Hoyt in Pomona, California. As a child, she enjoyed singing and dancing, often with her older brother Bill.

She met Garland Wood, the love of her life, when she was 16. They married when she was 18 and lived an adventurous and often challenging life for 57 years. Their central priorities were family, faith, and hard work. They raised three children, Kathleen, Deborah, and Brian, moving across the U.S. before settling in Okemos, Michigan, and spent many years on foreign aid assignments in Colombia, Argentina, Pakistan, and Nepal. Jeanne orchestrated the moves, helped build numerous homes — inside and out — knitted prolifically, and  enjoyed playing cards and reading. She worked as a librarian in Okemos and overseas, volunteered wherever and for whatever was needed, sang beautifully, and was loved by many. She was steady, brave, fun, fearless, resourceful, loyal, caring, energetic, and loving.

Jeanne’s Christian faith was central to her life and she lived it out by supporting missionaries and taking mission trips in various parts of the world. In her last years, she led services at Helen Porter Rehabilitation & Nursing, helped supply Charter House Coalition lunches and supported other groups, when she could no longer go out “on foot.” Her strong faith saw her through the stresses of life. She participated in congregations around the world, often hosting gatherings and finding her peace and life in Christ. She was a member and deacon at Memorial Baptist Church in Middlebury.

Jeanne was predeceased by her parents, her brother, Bill, and husband, Garland. She is survived by Kathleen & Steven Jewett of Middlebury, Vt.; Deborah & Roger Matherly of Lexington, SC; Brian & Lanette Wood of Knightdale, NC; eight beloved grandchildren — Kristin, David, and Nathan Matherly; Sara Jewett Nieuwoudt; John Jewett; Nicole Wood McVerry; Heather Wood Laufer; and Jason Wood; and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Aug. 14 at 11 a.m. at Memorial Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Addison County Home Health and Hospice (ACHHH), Memorial Baptist Church, or a charity of your choice. ◊
