For years, folk singer Johnny Flynn and nature writer Robert Macfarlane admired each other’s work from afar. When they became friends, the two creators combined their talents to make an album together.
Their project, Lost in the Cedar Wood, was born out of a mutual love of nature and walking — as well as a shared affection for the poem, Epic of Gilgamesh. As the two artists worked through the melancholy and loneliness brought on by the pandemic, Macfarlane and Flynn sent each other ideas and lyrics until it was finally safe enough for them to gather and record with other musicians. The result of their collaboration is a musical meditation on sorrow, isolation, friendship and myth. Johnny Flynn and Robert Macfarlane join us Friday at noon to talk about — and play selections from — Lost in the Cedar Wood.
