Wise County, Texas — On Monday afternoon, the Wise County Sheriff’s Office shared several photos of a wanted man identified with Royce Edward Wood, 43.
“When I heard that it was our own, there was a real horror that hit us,” said Wise County Sheriff Lane Akin.
Sheriff Akin said Wood wanted Wood for an invasion robbery the night before two policemen stopped him on his bike. According to officials, he shot an officer with his foot before escaping. A woman riding with him was detained, but later released, according to sheriffs.
The wood is described as 6 feet 2 inches, 200 pounds, with a bald head and beard. A Blue Alert issued to Wood for suspects who have severely injured or killed law enforcement officers.
“When he sees the picture, we expect him to do what he can to change his appearance a bit,” Sheriff Akin said.
The Texas Criminal Justice Department said Wood, who lives in Azle, had previously been in prison for robbery and burglary. The Lubbock County District Secretary’s office has confirmed these convictions resulting from the 2012 case. He began a 10-year sentence in 2014, but served only half of it and was released in 2019. According to the reason for the Texas parole, Purdon and Paroles’ opinion was that Wood “maintained a satisfactory institutional adjustment.”
A nonprofit organization in Tarrant County told WFAA on Monday that it supported Wood, who previously said he was a veteran.
Wood is currently in operation and is considered dangerous, officials said. Sheriff Akin said they also found stimulants on Wood motorcycles. After he shot the policeman, the policeman returned 10 rounds, but Akin said there was no sign that Wood was shot.
“We want him to be in jail in a few days,” he said. “I think this is a dangerous guy. I know he was going to hurt one of our officers. As for police, he was released from JPS Hospital early Monday morning and is recovering at home. Police officers have not yet been identified, but Lakeworth police chief JT Manouchhasian said he was his best friend.
