SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Top 100 retailer Furniture Mart USA is expanding its warehousing operations, more than doubling its footprint when the facility is operational.
The Sioux Falls, S.D.-based store group is adding 300,000 square feet to its distribution center and corporate headquarters. When completed, the facility will exceed 650,000 square feet. Construction crews began excavation on the site in October 2020, and a formal groundbreaking is planned for this summer.
Inside its corporate headquarters, Furniture Mart USA recently installed an additional 55 workstations which more than doubled the size of its customer service operations. Officials say more employees will be hired later this year and next year as the expanded distribution center is brought online.
“South Dakota’s strong economy is creating opportunity for businesses like Furniture Mart USA to continue growing and thriving,” said S.D. Governor Kristi Noem. “Our ‘Open for Business’ approach is allowing Furniture Mart USA to create even more jobs for our state.”
The company was founded in 1977 when Bill Hinks opened his first Unclaimed Freight Furniture on West 12th St. in Sioux Falls. Today, Furniture Mart USA operates in six Midwestern states under the Furniture Mart, Ashley HomeStore, Unclaimed Freight and Carpet One nameplates.
“When it comes down to our decision to expand in South Dakota versus other possible locations, what’s been made abundantly clear is that South Dakota’s commitment to being open for business and staying open for business throughout and despite the pandemic is a clear indication of what it means to do business here,” said Troy Eichmann, COO of Furniture Mart USA.
Eichmann said the 300,000-square-foot addition will provide distribution support for the Midwest region with Sioux Falls is a central hub. This growth will enable the company to have more products in stock and will service customers more quickly.
In a report by local TV station KELO, Eichmann said the retailer receives hundreds of deliveries per week, which underscored the need for additional capacity. ““We receive, just from one of our vendors, over 100 semis a week; that’s just from one vendor,” Eichmann said.
Furniture Mart USA ranks No. 37 in Furniture Today’s Top 100 list with an estimated $277.3 million in sales among 48 stores in 2020.
