Abington’s Maria Wood shines at Div. 2 South track and field championships - Boston Herald

HINGHAM — Abington’s Maria Wood believed the 200 would be the toughest race in her 100/200 double attempt at Saturday’s Div. 2 South Track & Field Championships at Notre Dame Academy. The Green Wave junior, after all, likened running the curve in the 200 as a “brutal push.”

What was especially “brutal” was Wood’s decimation of both fields. Now she’s looking for a top-five finish in the two events at next week’s All-States. Wood made things look easy as she tore away from the field to capture the 200 in 25.74, then came back and held off a talented lineup to complete the double with a 12.44 victory in the 100.

Wood’s wide smile told the tale of how she felt about her pair of wins.

“Honestly, I was seeded first in both and wanted to stay there,” said the beaming Wood. “My block starts were pretty good in both races. I figured the 200 would be the toughest of the two races.”

Norton’s Ali Murphy could see and feel the field bearing down on her over the final 100, but the Lancers sophomore had built a big enough lead to keep it at bay. She crossed the line in 58.25, a personal best by more than a second in the hot conditions.

“I could see everything on the straightaway and knew they were right next to me,” said Murphy. “I was slowing down by the end. I just want to have fun and push hard again (at All-States).”

Norton wound up with wins from Murphy and Isabella Pietrasiewicz on Thursday in the 800 (2:15.20) to edge out Plymouth South in the team competition, 47-46.

Nauset’s Sophie Christopher’s game plan in the 400 hurdles was a strong start from the gun and a surge right through to the finish. Christopher pushed hard over the final 100 and won with a time of 64.68. Her mark was a school record and new personal best.

The University of Vermont-bound talent is hoping to go even faster at All-States.

“I’ve been working on my starts for the past week now because I was falling behind,” Christopher said. “I wanted to get out strong and obviously finish strong, too. It was really good to have someone on me pushing me.”

Pietrasiewicz of Norton highlighted the opening day of competition on Thursday with an impressive 2:15.20 in the 800, paving the way for what she hopes is another stellar race at All-States.

Freshman Luisi Carmen of Holliston pulled away from Alex Lusby of Medfield to capture the mile, 5:06.80 to 5:09.72. Apponequet’s Margarat Gallagher edged Adrienne Christy of Martha’s Vineyard in the 2-mile, 11:40.43 to 11:40.91. Milton won the 4×800 in 10:14.03 and Beverly Lovett of Randolph got off a 102-9 heave to capture the javelin.
