LyondellBasell's Wood: Community, relationships key for JV - BIC Magazine

sedar.indah.link

This past December, LyondellBasell and Sasol announced the close of the Louisiana-based Integrated PolyEthylene Joint Venture (JV) LLC. Upon signing the 50/50 JV agreement, LyondellBasell took over as the site's sole operator and needed to appoint a new site manager. The company's leadership didn't have to look far to find the right man for the job. Anthony "Tony" Wood began serving as site manager on Dec. 1, 2020.

Taking over as the JV's new site manager would be a challenge in any year, but within months of entering his new position, Wood also had to face the additional challenges posed by COVID-19, as well as the decline in oil prices that followed. Despite these obstacles, Wood stayed the course and kept the JV on track, a great accomplishment for any site manager, much less one who had been on the job for only a few months.

According to Wood, his primary responsibility is overseeing safe and efficient manufacturing at the JV, located near Westlake, Louisiana.

"In order to ensure our success, it is paramount to ensure our team members are properly trained to perform their jobs," he said. "We strive to consistently deliver high-quality products to our customers while being a responsible, good neighbor in the communities in which we operate."

Wood could be considered to be a homegrown talent of LyondellBasell. He began his career at the company right out of high school, starting off as a part-time security officer at the Lake Charles Polypropylene Plant. All told, he would spend 24 years at that Lake Charles site, beginning his long upward trajectory at the company while still a teenager. Wood studied chemical engineering at McNeese State University, eventually moving on from his initial position as a security officer to process operator, shift supervisor and unit supervisor. After graduation, he rose to the roles of process engineer and maintenance and reliability manager. In October 2013, Wood relocated to Houston to serve in multiple management positions at LyondellBasell's sites in Alvin, Bayport, Matagorda and Pasadena, Texas.

In LyondellBasell, Sasol found an attractive partner. As one of the leading plastics, chemicals and refining companies in the world, LyondellBasell is the world's largest producer of polymer compounds and the largest licensor of polyolefin technologies. The 50/50 shareholder companies recognized that bringing LyondellBasell's experience to the JV's operations would be a win for both parties. Wood's experience would lend itself to the initial goals of reducing costs and optimizing the operational efficiency of the site.

With the agreement, LyondellBasell acquired half ownership of the JV's 1.5-million- ton ethane cracker, the 0.9-million-ton low-density and linear-low-density polyethylene plants, and associated infrastructure for total considerations of $2 billion. While LyondellBasell took over as the site's operator, it will toll manufacture products on behalf of both shareholders, as well as market the site's products on behalf of both parties.

The JV imports ethane via pipeline to produce ethylene and other co-products. That ethylene is consumed in downstream units to make polyethylene, and the balance of ethylene is exported via pipeline. "Most of the JV's clients are polyethylene customers who use our products to make films for various consumer packaging," Wood explained.

New site, new challenges

Part of the JV agreement entailed transitioning approximately 400 of the site's existing Sasol employees to LyondellBasell, retaining critical institutional knowledge of the site and aiding in the transition of operations to its new operator with minimal delays and downtime. Transitioning those 400 employees, Wood said, has been the greatest challenge he's faced at the JV to date -- an even greater challenge than the impositions placed on the site by the pandemic.

"The timing for full integration will be one to two years," he said. "Additionally, as we continue to navigate the integration of the employees and systems, we have worked to manage a safe operating environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. We strive each and every day to ensure the safety of our employees and their families."

But the JV could not fully operate using only the employees who've transitioned to LyondellBasell from Sasol, Wood pointed out.

"The site has recently gone through an extensive hiring process and we are thrilled to have new team members join our Lake Charles operation," Wood said. "We are focused on building a winning team, driving continuous improvement along with safe and reliable operations."

Wood noted that the safety and well-being of the JV's employees remain top priorities. So far, he said, there have been zero injuries, zero environmental incidents and zero process safety incidents at the site. He attributed this exemplary safety record to LyondellBasell's company culture as an industry leader in health, safety and environmental performance, as well as adherence to its internal operational excellence standards.

In addition to maintaining a stellar safety record, Wood pointed out that LyondellBasell is also committed to being a responsible, good neighbor in the communities where it operates. Through its global citizenship program, Advancing Good, the company invests in charitable organizations that support three key focus areas: Advancing Our Communities, Advancing Our Planet and Preparing Tomorrow's Workforce. But Wood is also quick to point out that the JV applies this global initiative to being a "responsible neighbor" at the local level as well.

Every year, LyondellBasell holds its Global Care Day, where the company's operating facilities and office personnel perform charitable work to benefit each site's surrounding community.

"Global Care Day is LyondellBasell's worldwide day of service where employees, contractors, friends and families come together to make a positive impact to advance good locally and globally," Wood said.

However, the company doesn't limit its charitable outreach to a single day. LyondellBasell is also involved in various community outreach programs throughout the year.

"Our plant and our employees support several local community organizations by volunteering time and providing financial contributions/donations," Wood said.

In addition to its many charitable endeavors, Wood also described how the JV's everyday operations are a part of LyondellBasell's commitment to community.

"Sustainability is a key focus for us and our industry," he said. "For LyondellBasell, sustainability means advancing solutions to address global challenges while meeting our stakeholders' needs and the highest operational standards. Our commitment to society and the environment is embedded in our company vision to be the best-operated and most-valued company in our industry -- today and tomorrow."

Maintaining a community presence through direct engagement and sustainable practices are skills Wood thinks are critically important to his role as the JV site manager.

"Building strong relationships with employees, contractors, customers, suppliers, peers and community leaders helps establish trust," he said. "It starts with active leadership, quality decision making, effective communication and being a strong community advocate."

As LyondellBasell's home-grown choice to lead its new operation, with his extensive history of existing relationships in the Lake Charles area, Wood was the natural fit for growing and developing those relationships for the JV.

  • Lawyers in election challenge suit face July 13 hearing
  • New counsel specialize in attorney grievance defense

(Reuters) - Sidney Powell, L. Lin Wood and other attorneys facing potential sanctions for their roles in trying to overturn Michigan's 2020 electoral results in favor of former president Donald Trump have turned to a pair of attorney grievance and ethics specialists from a local Michigan law firm.

Donald Campbell and Patrick McGlinn, attorneys at Southfield, Michigan-based Collins Einhorn Farrell PC, filed notices of appearance on Wednesday in Detroit federal court on behalf of lawyers Powell, Wood, Scott Hagerstrom, Julia Haller, Brandon Johnson, Gregory Rohl and Howard Kleinhendler.

The filings say Campbell and McGlinn were hired in response to a June 17 order by U.S. District Judge Linda Parker mandating that every attorney whose names were on pleadings in the election challenge lawsuit must appear at a July 13 hearing over whether they should be sanctioned.

The lawyers alleged in the lawsuit that a vast, tangled fraud allowed Democrat Joe Biden to flip the state and win the election over Trump. Parker dismissed the allegations in December.

The city of Detroit and Michigan state officials have asked Parker to sanction Wood, Powell, and the others for making frivolous legal arguments. Detroit in particular asked for the attorneys to be referred to disciplinary authorities in their home states and to be barred from practicing in the district court.

Parker on Wednesday pushed the timing of the sanctions hearing from July 6 to July 13 after one of the plaintiffs' attorneys, Stefanie Lambert Junttila, asked Parker to move it because a planned family vacation presented "an unavoidable conflict."

Campbell and McGlinn did not respond to requests for comment. Campbell, whose practice is focused on attorney grievance defense, has taught ethics at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law since 2002, according to his biography on the firm's webpage. McGlinn also practices in professional liability and grievance defense.

Both Campbell and McGlinn worked for years at the Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission, which regulates and disciplines Michigan attorneys, according to their bios.

(NOTE: This story has been updated to reflect U.S. District Judge Linda Parker's Wednesday ruling pushing the sanctions hearing, originally set for July 6, to July 13.)

Shane Lowry Says the Claret Jug Has Become "Part of the Furniture" - Pro Golf Weekly

Reigning Open champion Shane Lowry confessed on Wednesday that the Claret Jug has become “part of the furniture” in his house but he’s ready to move on with the hopes of accomplishing “different stuff” in the game.

Because last year’s Open was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, Lowry has been able to hold on to the iconic trophy for an extra year, going back to his victory at Royal Portrush in July 2019

The 34-year-old Irishman, though, said it will be returned “great shape” and that he’ll even shine it up before handing over in two weeks, ahead of his defense at Royal St George’s.

“You know, it’s funny, because you think, not that it’s done, but like it’s so long ago now, not that I’m ready to put it behind me because it’s something I’ll always have, but I’m really happy I’ve achieved something like that,” said Lowry at Mount Juliet Golf & Spa Hotel, ahead of the Irish Open.

“I’ve obviously got the trophy. But it’s not like I sit down there every night with it on my dinner table in front of when I’m eating my dinner. It’s something that I have and I’ve put aside.

“But I’m obviously very focused and driven to do things and do different things in the sport, not necessarily bigger, better, because I think I’ll find that hard to achieve.

“But yeah, I’m just very hungry and very anxious — not anxious, but very hungry and very driven and focused on going and achieving different stuff in this game. I don’t tend to think about it too much.

“It’s funny, because it’s just there now. It’s a part of the furniture and it’s pretty cool to have that.”

He added, “I have to be there Monday morning, so I’m sure that’s when I give it back.

“Yeah, I’m travelling over on Sunday and I’ll be there Monday morning at the golf course. That’s the plan as far as I know, anyway.”

Growing 'metallic wood' to new heights - Science Daily

sedar.indah.link

Natural wood remains a ubiquitous building material because of its high strength-to-density ratio; trees are strong enough to grow hundreds of feet tall but remain light enough to float down a river after being logged.

For the past three years, engineers at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Engineering and Applied Science have been developing a type of material they've dubbed "metallic wood." Their material gets its useful properties and name from a key structural feature of its natural counterpart: porosity. As a lattice of nanoscale nickel struts, metallic wood is full of regularly spaced cell-sized pores that radically decrease its density without sacrificing the material's strength.

The precise spacing of these gaps not only gives metallic wood the strength of titanium at a fraction of the weight, but unique optical properties. Because the spaces between gaps are the same size as the wavelengths of visible light, the light reflecting off of metallic wood interferes to enhance specific colors. The enhanced color changes are based on the angle that light reflects off of the surface, giving it a dazzling appearance and the potential to be used as a sensor.

Penn Engineers have now solved a major problem preventing metallic wood from being manufactured at meaningful sizes: eliminating the inverted cracks that form as the material is grown from millions of nanoscale particles to metal films big enough to build with. Preventing these defects, which have plagued similar materials for decades, allows strips of metallic wood to be assembled in areas 20,000 times greater than they were before.

James Pikul, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics, and Zhimin Jiang, a graduate student in his lab, have published a study demonstrating this improvement in the journal Nature Materials.

When a crack forms within an everyday material, bonds between its atoms break, eventually cleaving the material apart. An inverted crack, by contrast, is an excess of atoms; in the case of metallic wood, inverted cracks consist of extra nickel that fills in the nanopores critical to its unique properties.

"Inverted cracks have been a problem since the first synthesis of similar materials in the late 1990s," says Jiang. "Figuring out a simple way of eliminating them has been a long-standing hurdle in the field."

These inverted cracks stem from the way that metallic wood is made. It starts as a template of nanoscale spheres, stacked on top of one another. When nickel is deposited through the template, it forms metallic wood's lattice structure around the spheres, which can then be dissolved away to leave its signature pores.

However, if there are any places where the spheres' regular stacking pattern is disrupted, the nickel will fill those gaps, producing an inverted crack when the template is removed.

"The standard way to build these materials is to start with a nanoparticle solution and evaporate the water until the particles are dry and regularly stacked. The challenge is that the surface forces of water are so strong that they rip the particles apart and form cracks, just like cracks that form in drying sand," Pikul says. "These cracks are very difficult to prevent in the structures we are trying to build, so we developed a new strategy that allows us to self-assemble the particles while keeping the template wet. This prevents the films from cracking, but because the particles are wet, we have to lock them in place using electrostatic forces so that we can fill them with metal."

With larger, more consistent strips of metallic wood now possible, the researchers are particularly interested in using these materials to build better devices.

"Our new manufacturing approach allows us to make porous metals that are three times stronger than previous porous metals at similar relative density and 1,000 times larger than other nanolattices," Pikul says. "We plan to use these materials to make a number of previously impossible devices, which we are already using as membranes to separate biomaterials in cancer diagnostics, protective coatings and flexible sensors."

CNBC.com's Pippa Stevens brings you the day's top business news headlines. On today's show, CNBC's Kate Rooney explains why highly-watched fund Ark Invest is interested in launching a bitcoin ETF, even as bitcoin goes mainstream. Plus, Chinese Uber rival Didi Chuxing looks poised to raise $4 billion when it goes public on the NYSE on Wednesday.

Cathie Wood’s Ark Invest to create a bitcoin ETF under the symbol ‘ARKB’

Cathie Wood's Ark Invest is creating a bitcoin exchange-traded fund, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Wood — a longtime bitcoin bull — has been buying up proxies for the digital asset in names such as Coinbase and Grayscale Bitcoin Trust. Now, the innovation investor is seeking to own the actual asset itself.

The ETF's investment objective is to track the performance of bitcoin, according to the SEC filing. The fund would trade under the ticker symbol "ARKB," if approved by the SEC. Ark Invest is working in partnership with 21Shares to launch the ETF.

How the FTC could keep fighting Facebook

While a federal court delivered Facebook a reprieve on Monday by dismissing an antitrust case by a group of state attorneys general and a separate complaint by the Federal Trade Commission, its court battles may not be over just yet.

U.S. District Judge James Boasberg dismissed the states' case entirely, explaining in a court filing that they waited too long to challenge the company's acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp, which were completed over a half a decade before their complaint. But in dismissing the FTC's complaint, he left the door open for the agency to refile its claims against Facebook, while laying out a blueprint for how it might better plead its case.

Facebook said in a statement on Monday it was "pleased" by the court's ruling, adding, "We compete fairly every day to earn people's time and attention and will continue to deliver great products for the people and businesses that use our services."

June 28 (Reuters) - (This June 28 story corrects headline and paragraphs 1, 2 and 4 to make clear that 21Shares, not ARK, filed to offer the ETF and that ARK is providing marketing)

Star stock picker Cathie Wood's ARK Invest is teaming up with 21Shares US LLC, which filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday to create a bitcoin exchange traded fund (ETF), the latest fund manager attempting to cash in on investors' growing interest in cryptocurrencies.

Wood, whose ARK Innovation ETF was the top-performing U.S. equity fund last year, has been a vocal proponent of bitcoin, and Wood's firm will provide marketing for the proposed ETF, according to the filing.

Her flagship ARK Innovation fund (ARKK.P) owns around $820 million worth of shares in cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global (COIN.O), making it the fund's 10th largest holding. Coinbase has fallen 35% since its stock market debut in April.

21Shares' application to the SEC follows recent filings by Fidelity and CBOE Global Markets in March. The SEC has yet to approve a bitcoin ETF.

Bitcoin , tumbled in recent days to a two-week low as China's expanding crackdown on bitcoin mining made investors more uncertain about the future of the leading cryptocurrency. Bitcoin on Monday traded at about $34,450, compared to its April peak of nearly $65,000.

Zug-based 21Shares is looking to enter the US market in partnership with Cathy Wood’s Ark Investment Management.

Star investor Cathie Wood’s Ark Investment Management and Switzerland-based 21Shares intend to launch a cryptocurrency exchange-traded fund in the U.S, an application to the Securities and Exchange Commission shows.

First reported by «Bloomberg» (behind paywall), the fund called ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF, will track the S&P Global Bitcoin Index.

    Ark Stake in 21Shares

Wood invested in cryptocurrency exchange-traded product specialist 21Shares and joined its board in May. When she joined 21Shares its assets had surged to $2 billion from less than $30 million a year earlier.

The Ark brand could help that number to rise further through the U.S. fund. Across the Atlantic, $6.5 trillion dollars are managed in ETFs compared with $1.475 trillion in Europe.

    SEC Reservations

However, Wood and 21Shares may have to wait a while before the fund can launch. According to Bloomberg, 14 applicants for cryptocurrency ETFs are awaiting a decision from the SEC. The regulator also has considerable reservations about cryptocurrency funds which could end up in the hands of retail investors.

Some furniture could face 25% duties in Section 301 India investigation - Furniture Today

    sedar.indah.link

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A government investigation into India’s taxation of digital services could result in duties of 25% on more than two dozen Indian-sourced products including bedroom furniture and seating.

However, the Office of the United States Trade Representative plans to suspend imposing the duties up to a period of 180 days, or up to Nov. 29, 2021 to allow for additional time for multilateral or bilateral discussions that could resolve the matter. If the USTR determines that this period should be less than 180 days, it will issue another notice involving the imposition of duties.

At present the debate is addressing India’s Digital Services Tax, which imposes a 2% tax on revenues generated from digital services offered in India, including digital platform service, software as a service and several other categories of digital services.

The USTR found in January that the tax is unreasonable or discriminatory and thus burdens or restricts U.S. commerce. In June, the USTR said it was considering imposing duties of 25% on 26 individual product categories.

The list includes the following furniture products:

    • Seats nesoi (not elsewhere specified or included), of bent wood (HTSUS code 9401.69.20)
    • Chairs nesoi, with teak frames, not upholstered (9401.69.40)
    • Chairs nesoi, with wooden frames, other than teak, not upholstered (9401.69.60)
    • Seats (other than chairs) nesoi, with wooden frames, not upholstered (9401.69.80)
    • Furniture (other than 9401 or 9402) of bentwood nesoi, of a kind used in the bedroom (9403.50.40)
    • Furniture (other than 9401 or 9402) of wood (other than bentwood) of a kind used in the bedroom and not designed for motor vehicle use (9403.50.90)
    • Rattan furniture and parts thereof (9403.83.00)

The USTR said these and other product categories targeted for a 25% duty had an estimated trade value of $119 million in 2019, which compares to the $55 million value of the DST that U.S. companies pay India per year.

In 2020, India shipped $347.6 million in furniture, including case goods, seating and bedding to the U.S., down 8% from the $376.8 million it shipped to the U.S. in 2019. The top categories include miscellaneous wood furniture such as occasional, entertainment and office furniture, furniture of other materials such as woven materials, wood dining tables, wood bedroom furniture and metal, non-upholstered seats.

I'm Tom Russell and have worked at Furniture/Today since August 2003. Since then, I have covered the international side of the business from a logistics and sourcing standpoint. Since then, I also have visited several furniture trade shows and manufacturing plants in Asia, which has helped me gain perspective about the industry in that part of the world. As I continue covering the import side of the business, I look forward to building on that knowledge base through conversations with industry officials and future overseas plant tours. Wood River Valley Farmers Ordered To Stop Irrigating During Extreme Drought - Boise State Public Radio

    sedar.indah.link

Farmers who irrigate their crops with groundwater in a region of south central Idaho will need to turn off their water this week, according to an order from Idaho’s Department of Water Resources.

As a result, 140 operations with more than 300 groundwater rights that support 23,000 acres of farmland south of Bellevue will stop irrigating alfalfa, barley and potatoes as of July 1.

The order comes after a six-day hearing this month during which Director Gary Spackman heard testimony from surface water users, who argued pumping by groundwater users means they don’t get their full share of water, and groundwater users who made the case for why they shouldn’t be curtailed on short notice. Spackman ruled in favor of the surface users.

Surface water users get their water from streams or reservoirs. Their rights in the Wood River Valley, and in particular an agricultural area south of Bellevue called the Bellevue Triangle, date back to the 1880s. In comparison, the development of groundwater wells there took off in the 1940s. That means most surface water users have water rights that are senior and most groundwater rights are junior.

Idaho manages water according to the “prior appropriation doctrine,” so people with older water rights get higher priority to the water in times of scarcity.

Senior surface water users in recent years have argued that unchecked groundwater pumping in the region means they don’t get all the water they’re entitled to, but their actions to rectify the situation legally have been dismissed by Spackman on procedural grounds twice.

Though Idaho law says the state must manage water in a way that acknowledges surface water and groundwater are connected, it has not done so in the Wood River Valley.

Groundwater users in the valley have never been curtailed up until this point, according to Spackman’s ruling. That’s despite the state's creation of a Groundwater Management Area in 1991, effectively ending development of wells over concerns about groundwater levels.

In typical water years since 1991, most users have been able to get their full allotment. But not in drought years, and especially not this year amid an ongoing, multi-year drought that has worsened substantially, even since last month.

Kevin Lackey, the water manager for district 37, called it the worst water supply year he’d seen since starting his job in 2003.

Surface water irrigators with some of the earliest water rights, dating back to 1883, are expected to run out of water by the end of the month and many fields are already dried up.

Spackman issued the ruling Monday afternoon, making the case that shutting off groundwater wells this irrigation season in the Bellevue Triangle would benefit senior surface water users who get their supply from Silver Creek or the Little Wood River.

A groundwater model developed by the department shows once groundwater pumping in the triangle eases off, more water shows up in streams that flow into Silver Creek.

Surface water farmers, many located in Lincoln and Gooding counties, cited projected damages to their individual operations ranging from about $40,000 to $200,000 this season, and they said some harm is likely done.

Groundwater users said any benefit from shutting off the wells is uncertain, in part because the irrigation season is already underway. But some surface water users said getting more water at the end of the season could be enough to save certain crops.

Parties can file appeals on the order within 14 days.

Growth stock comeback fuels Cathie Wood's ARK funds - Reuters

NEW YORK, June 29 (Reuters) - A more than 10% surge in growth stocks since the start of the quarter is fueling a comeback in star stock picker Cathie Wood's ARK funds, which posted some of the worst declines among all U.S. equity funds over the first three months of the year.

The ARK Innovation fund (ARKK.P), which is managed by firm founder Wood, gained 3.5% on Monday and is now up 4.3% for the year to date, highlighting a nearly 31% comeback since hitting its May 13 low. Prior to its recent rally, the fund had been down by as much as 9% for the year.

Driving the gains are declining fears of runaway inflation and the failure of U.S. bond yields to follow through on their dramatic first-quarter rally, accelerating a rotation back in to the sort of hyper-growth stocks that helped Wood post the best returns of all actively managed mutual fund managers in 2020 tracked by Morningstar.

Monday's move was also helped by breakthroughs in gene editing announced on Saturday which boosted the shares of several biotech companies Wood's firm holds in several of its funds, including its flagship Ark Innovation fund.

"Investors have been rewarded for staying loyal to ARK and their long-term growth strategies as fears of rising interest rates were diminished," said Todd Rosenbluth, director of mutual fund research at CFRA. "ARKK has significantly outperformed the broader market in the past month and is now in the black after being down double digits."

Among Wood's holdings are Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc (REGN.O), which is up 22.1% since its March low, and Intellia Therapeutics Inc (NTLA.O), which rallied more than 50% on Monday after posting positive interim data over the weekend from its ongoing early-stage trial for its genome editing candidate, NTLA-2001.

Overall, the Russell 1000 Growth index (.RLG) is up 11.4% since the start of the quarter, nearly triple the 4.6% gain in the Russell 1000 Value index (.RLV) over the same time. Those gains have come as the price of lumber and other commodities has fallen from multi-year peaks, helping ease investor concerns over spiking inflation.

The Federal Reserve took many investors by surprise with a more hawkish turn at its most recent policy meeting, sending the yield of the benchmark 10-year Treasury below 1.5% on expectations that the central bank would be less tolerant of rising inflation. That has helped bolster tech and growth stocks, as rising yields threaten to erode the value of their longer-term cash flows.

Despite ARK's recent gains, the performance of its flagship fund remains in the bottom 100th percentile among U.S. mid-cap growth funds, according to Morningstar data.

Whether the fund continues its recent hot streak will largely depend on the direction of the 10-year Treasury yield, said Jim Paulsen, chief investment strategist at the Leuthold Group.

"There's a high correlation between the 10-year and whether it's growth or value overall," as lower yields eat in to the profits of cyclical stocks such as financials, he said. While growth stocks are outperforming now, Paulsen remains skeptical the rally will continue.

"Growth is going to be really strong in the economy this year and next and I don't think we have seen the last of the inflation scare," he said.

Air quality district shares tips on preparing wood for winter - Plumas County Newspapers

    sedar.indah.link

    Burning Dry Wood

Believe it or not now is the optimal time to begin gathering or purchasing your wood for next winter as it can take from six months to two years for some wood to be dry enough to burn efficiently in your EPA certified wood stove. There’s really no calculator that can tell you exactly how long a specific type of wood takes to season, because there are so many variables at play. What you can do, no matter where you live, or the type of firewood you gather, or purchase, is to properly season it.

    Seasoning Your Wood

If you want your firewood to dry as quick as possible, make sure to split the logs as soon as possible while leaving them outside. Since firewood dries from the ends, not from the bark, the more exposed the ends are the quicker drying time. Firewood should measure at lower than 20 percent moisture with a moisture meter. If you live in the Greater Portola area, please contact the Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District today at 832-0102 for a free moisture meter!

    Storing Your Wood

Once you are ready to stack the firewood, make sure to do so on the sunny side of your property, as constant sunlight directed towards your wood stack will make it dry even better.

Also take into consideration proper ventilation – as you stack the firewood, make sure to leave openings in between to let the airflow pass through so that everything inside dries quicker. Having a large amount of airflow through the wood helps it dry more quickly. An open style woodshed design can assist with this airflow. When stacking your wood in any type of enclosure make sure all sides are open to the air to optimize drying. A roof over the stack can help keep the wood protected by the environment. You don’t want to enclose the wood on all sides by something like a tarp as it can inhibit air flow and drying of the wood.

You also want to avoid stacking the wood directly on the ground. When wood is stacked directly on the ground, the bottom layer can wick up ground moisture, is not subject to air flow and is more susceptible to mold and insects such as termites, which can destroy your firewood. There are numerous options to stacking your firewood directly on the ground; these include pressure treated 2 x 4’s or using old pallets as the base of your wood stack. If you have no option to stacking your wood directly on the ground, you can stack the first-row bark side down to inhibit some of the moisture wicking that can occur.

There are numerous types of woodsheds that can be constructed to further protect your firewood and to assist with proper ventilation and drying. Check out firewood stacking and storage options at the websites below:

Safety, Health and Why to Burn Dry Wood

When properly seasoned, dry wood burns in a stove at temperatures that allow the smoke that comes from burning to be fully ignited. This full ignition of the smoke prevents the buildup of creosote in your chimney. Creosote forms when wet wood is burned. When burning wood that has greater than 20% moisture content; optimal burning temperatures cannot be achieved, and as smoke escapes up the chimney the gases cool and condense leading to the formation of a tar, which eventually hardens into creosote. Creosote is basically unburnt fuel and can lead to a chimney fire.

When the creosote builds up and burns in your chimney the result is a chimney fire. These fires can reach more than 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. At best this can destroy your chimney structure and at worst it can ignite and fully destroy your home. Burning dry fuels can help prevent this risk and the build up of creosote

Burning unseasoned wood also leads to air pollution. The federal Environmental Protection Agency has classified the greater Portola Area as having the fifth worst air quality in the nation. Research has shown that this pollution is directly linked to our topography and the use of woodstoves in the local area. Older uncertified woodstoves produces more pollution then current EPA certified woodstoves. But even if you are burning in an EPA certified woodstove, if you are burning wet, unseasoned wood, you are contributing to the air pollution in the local area.

The biggest health threat from woodsmoke is from fine particles, also called fine particulate matter or PM2.5. These microscopic particles can get into your eyes and respiratory system, where they may cause burning eyes, runny nose, and illnesses, such as bronchitis.

Fine particles can make asthma symptoms worse and even trigger asthma attacks. Fine particles can also trigger heart attacks, stroke, irregular heart rhythms, and heart failure.

Burning dry wood in an EPA certified woodstove can help mitigate the health risks mentioned above.

Cathie Wood's Ark Invest files to create a bitcoin ETF - CNBC

    sedar.indah.link

Cathie Wood's Ark Invest filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday to create a bitcoin exchange-traded fund.

Bitcoin has hovered around $34,000 for the past couple of weeks as it struggles to reclaim its May highs. Many in the trading community have kept a watchful eye to see if it would hold at $30,000 as it continued its decline. Some still say it could drop as low as $20,000 before rebounding.

However, the digital asset has nearly been cut in half since its all-time high of about $63,000 in April. China's bitcoin crackdown, Tesla CEO Elon Musk's decision to stop accepting bitcoin for its electric vehicles, and excessive risk taking by crypto traders have all contributed to recent price swings.

Ark Invest acknowledged the volatility associated with the digital asset in the "risk factors" section of the filing.

"The market value of bitcoin is not related to any specific company, government or asset. The valuation of bitcoin depends on future expectations for the value of the Bitcoin network, the number of bitcoin transactions, and the overall usage of bitcoin as an asset. This means that a significant amount of the value of bitcoin is speculative, which could lead to increased volatility. Investors could experience significant gains, losses and/or volatility in the Trust's holdings, depending on the valuation of bitcoin," the S1 filing stated.

The SEC last week again postponed a decision to approve the first bitcoin ETF. The latest action comes as SEC Chairman Gary Gensler has called for more regulation of cryptocurrency exchanges and greater investor protections.

So far, there have been eight other bitcoin ETFs filed with the SEC.

Coinbase, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, is a top 10 holding in Wood's flagship fund Ark Innovation. Grayscale Bitcoin Trust is a top 10 holding in Ark Next Generation Internet ETF.

Wood has said she sees a future where bitcoin is part of a balanced investment portfolio. Ark Invest estimates that if 1% of the corporate cash of every company in the S&P 500 were converted into bitcoin, then the asset's price would balloon by more than $40,000 from its current levels. If the cash level increased to 10% from each company in the broader stock index, bitcoin's price would increase by more than $400,000, the firm said.

With Gensler — a longtime financier who taught a digital currency class at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology — being nominated to lead the Securities and Exchange Commission, the watchdog could warm to crypto during the Biden administration, Wood told CNBC earlier this year.

Wood's disruptive innovation funds have recently turned a corner after months of underperformance amid a rotation into value stocks. Shares of Ark Innovation are up more than 16% in June.

Rangers' Willie Calhoun, Hunter Wood Require Surgery - MLB Trade Rumors

    sedar.indah.link

Rangers outfielder/designated hitter Willie Calhoun will require surgery to repair a fracture in his left ulna, the team announced to reporters Monday (Twitter thread via Kennedi Landry of MLB.com). Calhoun sustained the injury when he was hit by a pitch on the forearm over the weekend. A clear timetable hasn’t yet been revealed — that’ll presumably come after the operation — but an absence of some note now looks all the more inevitable.

Meanwhile, right-hander Hunter Wood, who has been out since late May after hitting the IL with an elbow surgery that was eventually termed a “mild” sprain of his right ulnar collateral ligament. He’s now undergone elbow surgery and will miss a minimum of eight months, which suggests that Wood did not require a full Tommy John surgery (which comes with a 12- to 16-month recovery period). Indeed, the procedure in question installed an internal brace in Wood’s elbow, tweets The Athletic’s Levi Weaver.

It was already apparent that Calhoun would be out awhile following the announcement of a fracture, but it’s a tough blow all the same. The 26-year-old wasn’t hitting for the type of power he displayed in 2019, but Calhoun’s 8.4 percent walk rate and 11.6 percent strikeout rate are both career-best marks. He’s long been a touted hitting prospect, and had he been able to maintain that improved approach while reclaiming some of his 2019 pop as the summer wore on, there was some breakout potential.

It remains to be seen when or whether Calhoun will return to the big league club in 2021, but the injury will deprive him of a chance to bolster his case in his first offseason of arbitration eligibility. He’s under club control through the 2024 season.

As for Wood, the surgery will cut his season short at just five big league innings. The right-hander joined the organization on a minor league pact over the winter and showed well in a brief Triple-A look before allowing a pair of runs in his MLB frames. Wood didn’t pitch in the Majors last season, but he’s seen MLB time with both the Rays and the Indians in the past, throwing quite well along the way. He’s tallied 91 2/3 innings at the MLB level and put together a 3.34 ERA with a below-average 21.9 percent strikeout rate against an very solid 8.1 percent walk rate.

While Wood’s 2021 season is over, he can remain under team control with the Rangers organization — they’re comfortable committing a 40-man roster spot over the winter. There’s no guarantee that’ll be the case, but Wood has been outrighted in the past, so even if the Rangers remove him from the 40-man this winter and he goes unclaimed on waivers, he’d have the option of electing free agency to determine the best fit.

Cathie Wood Funds Rally as Gene Editing Edges Closer to Reality - Bloomberg

    sedar.indah.link

Two Cathie Wood funds are back in the spotlight after adding about $1 billion in market value on Monday following a promising advance in the field of gene editing.

Wood’s Ark Investment Management LLC is a top holder of companies operating in this area after the active investor made an early bet on Crispr Therapeutics AG, Intellia Therapeutics Inc. and Editas Medicine Inc.-- three companies using a technology for editing the human genome called Crispr. Ark is also the second largest holder in Beam Therapeutics Inc., another company working on fixing genetic mutations.

All four stocks rallied after Intellia and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. produced the first study of a Crispr treatment to alter genes inside the body, driving up the stocks of gene editing and other biotechs working with therapies around human DNA. The move marks a rebound for Editas and Crispr, as well as a pair of Wood’s actively managed exchange traded funds, which were hammered earlier this year as investors turned away from more speculative growth stocks to value safe havens.

Cathie Wood's gene editing bets on the rise after Intellia update

The Ark Genomic Revolution ETF rose 3.0% on Monday while the nearly $25 billion Ark Innovation ETF rallied 3.7% as of midday in New York.

“This may sway the FDA to be more constructive toward running gene editing trials in the U.S.,” said Benjamin Burnett an analyst with Stifel. Intellia’s trial was also a good sign for Precision BioSciences Inc., he told clients in a research note, and the stock climbed as much as 12%.

Intellia led the gains, soaring as much as 63% to a record in Monday trading, while Crispr climbed 10% at the high trade. Beam jumped as much as 21%. Editas gained as much as 20% before paring to a 4.8% gain.

Sentiment driven gains for Editas are “unwarranted” Goldman Sachs analyst Madhu Kumar told clients saying he saw a lack of similarities between sell-rated Editas and buy-rated Intellia’s technologies. The bank raised the 12-month price target on Intellia to $163 from $115.

Meanwhile, Alnylam Pharmaceuticals Inc. which works on a medicine to treat transthyretin amyloidosis --the disease Intellia is trying to cure in its study -- dropped 5.8%. Intellia is already hard at work on its next target, hereditary angioedema. BioCryst Pharmaceuticals Inc. and KalVista Pharmaceuticals Inc., companies working on treatments for that disease also tumbled in Monday trading.

“We believe this data will enter the history books, signifying that in vivo gene editing and one-time cures are possible,” Ark analyst Ali Urman wrote after Intellia’s update. “The only question remaining is will it be durable?”

Growing 'metallic wood' to new heights | Penn Today - Penn Today

      sedar.indah.link

Natural wood remains a ubiquitous building material because of its high strength-to-density ratio; trees are strong enough to grow hundreds of feet tall but remain light enough to float down a river after being logged.

A metallic arch on a surface reflecting a rainbow prism.
This strip of metallic wood, about an inch long and one-third inch wide, is thinner than household aluminum foil but is supporting more than 50 times its own weight without buckling. If the weight was suspended from it, the same strip could support more than six pounds without breaking. (Image: Penn Engineering Today)

For the past three years, engineers at the School of Engineering and Applied Science have been developing a type of material they’ve dubbed “metallic wood.” Their material gets its useful properties and name from a key structural feature of its natural counterpart: porosity. As a lattice of nanoscale nickel struts, metallic wood is full of regularly spaced cell-sized pores that radically decrease its density without sacrificing the material’s strength.

Lana Wood to Revisit Natalie Wood Investigation in Memoir (Exclusive) - Hollywood Reporter

      sedar.indah.link

Lana Wood is ready to revisit what happened to her sister and late Hollywood icon Natalie Wood.

The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively announce that Wood is set to release a new memoir, Little Sister: My Investigation into the Mysterious Death of Natalie Wood, from Dey Street Books this November.

In the upcoming true crime memoir, Lana Wood will offer a raw account of the life and death of her sister, as she details new information from those directly involved in the investigation of Wood’s 1981 death. Lana will also address myths and misconceptions behind Wood’s death and share secrets she’s held onto for years.

The memoir will arrive in lieu of the 40th anniversary of Wood’s death.

      Related Stories

“I’ve waited 40 years to finally unburden myself about what happened to my sister Natalie Wood,” Lana Wood said in a statement. “I’m finally sharing everything I know now and what I knew then but was not ready to or brave enough to reveal. This book will shed new light on my life with Natalie, leading up to, and culminating in the events surrounding her death.”

Wood died at the age of 43 under mysterious circumstances after she went missing from her family’s yacht, only to be found floating in the water wearing a red down jacket and flannel nightgown.

Though her death was ruled an accident at the time following a two-week investigation, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reopened the investigation in 2011, and the coroner amended the cause of Wood’s death to “drowning and other undetermined factors.” Her husband Robert Wagner was eventually named a person of interest with officials confirming he was the last person to be with the actress before her disappearance. Wagner has refused to speak with investigators.

In the 2014 book, Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour, written by the late actress’ yacht captain Dennis Davern and co-author Marti Rulli, Davern alleged that Wagner pushed Wood off the yacht to her death. He also alleged in an interview with Megyn Kelly that Wagner held him “hostage,” suggesting that it was in an effort to bar him from telling the truth about Wood’s tragic incident. In a 2019 interview with The New York Times, Lana disputed the theory that her sister accidentally drowned after getting into a dinghy alone. “Natalie didn’t swim. Her fear of dark water was deeply ingrained,” she said.

In a 48 Hours special, “Natalie Wood: Death in Dark Water,” Lt. John Corina stated that an autopsy report showed what looked like fresh bruises on Wood’s body, making her look like “the victim of an assault.” However, Corina said at the time, “We have not been able to prove this was a homicide. And we haven’t been able to prove that this was an accident either. The ultimate problem is we don’t know how she ended up in the water.”

Little Sister: My Investigation into the Mysterious Death of Natalie Wood will be released on Nov. 9.
