WOOD RIVER, Neb. (KSNB) - Wood River Volunteer Fire Department hosted their first-ever vaccine clinic on Sunday to help more residents get their shots.
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. they administered the Phizer vaccine and although they did have 50 people signed up, they also accepted walk-ins.
“We started at 9 a.m.,” Wood River Volunteer Fire Department Paramedic Nick Lammers said. “I think we’ve had about 30 people come through already, a lot of younger people since we opened up now for 12 and over as long as the parent is here, we can give them a shot, so we’ve had quite a few younger ones come in.”
The department teamed up with the Central District Health Department to hopefully catch people when they’re leaving or heading to church.
“We’ve had quite a bit of requests to do something here and so I talked to the Central District Health Department about it and they thought it was a good idea,” Lammers said.
Wood River Firefighters have been volunteering at vaccine clinics all throughout the pandemic and was actually one of the first volunteer departments to get their sho in the Central District. They believe it’s their duty to help everyone else get vaccinated.
“We serve a role in the community to help others and so the more people we can get the vaccine, the less we’re going to have to have calls with them when they’re sick with COVID, so we think it’s important from a safety standpoint to get as many people in the community vaccinated as possible,” Lammers said.
The department plans to host another clinic on June 13.
