Wood 50, Rodriguez 45

On Tuesday night at Rodriguez, Wood edged the Mustangs to improve to 5-2 in Monticello Empire League play. The Wildcats and Mustangs are now tied for second place with identical records behind undefeated Vanden.

The first time the two teams met this season Rodriguez bounced the Wildcats by 19 points.

“We were able to really turn up our defensive efforts tonight and also limit the number of second-chance opportunities Rodriguez could get by placing a huge emphasis on boxing out,” said Wood head coach Carly Wudel. “Athena Brombacher and Christina Edwards did a great job fighting for rebounds every possession. Everyone had each other’s back and communicated much better tonight.”

Wood led 28-24 at halftime but lost the lead for a bit in the third quarter. It was back and forth the rest of the way until the Wildcats went up by six with 40 seconds left in the game after a layup by Jazmine Langi and an excellent assist by Christina Edwards.

Genesis Ernie-Hamilton and Brombacher scored nine points each for Wood with Edwards, Kailei Gomez, Kayla Gibson contributing eight each.

“I’m extremely proud of the way our team played tonight,” Wudel said. “We knew if we played fundamental basketball as a team and controlled the pace, we could put ourselves in a position for success. We were able to execute in crunch time, coming up with some big-time rebounds on the defensive end.”
