At home on Wednesday, the Will C. Wood boys soccer team eked out a 2-1 win over Armijo to remain undefeated in Monticello Empire League play. The win gave the Wildcats sole possession of first place with a 3-0 record. Vacaville High is in second place with a 2-0-1 mark.

Wood stumbled to an 0-1 deficit when a back pass got past keeper Zack Rabold for an own goal. Wood then tied it up when Jose Garcia came through with a first-half goal.

In the second half, Armijo returned the favor with an own goal to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead. Wood hit the pipes three times in the second half but could not get the ball in the back of the net.

Wood plays at Vanden on Friday.

Girls soccer

Wood 6, Fairfield 1

Last Tuesday, April 27, Will C. Wood dispatched Fairfield, 6-1, at Wildcat Stadium.

Wood got three goals from Kylie Rolling, two from Grace Vojkufka and one from Cecilia Marin. Vojkufka also assisted on two goals. Kaeley Cariglio, Josephine Gonzalez and Rebecca Smith had one assist apiece.

“Fairfield played a great game,” said Wood head coach Andrea Daniels. “They were very aggressive the entire match. Grace Vojkufka, a freshman, had an amazing game. She played hard, very strong on the ball and confident the entire match. Rebecca Smith had a standout game. She played with high pressure and great intensity.”

Wood 6, Armijo 0

On Tuesday, May 4 at Armijo, the Wildcats sunk the Royals, 6-0, to improve to 3-0 in MEL play.

Kylie Rolling scored five of the team’s six goals, with Kaeley Cariglio collecting the other. Cariglio assisted on two goals, as did Rebecca Smith. Carmen Andrade also had an assist.

“Armijo had a very early cross and put us under heavy pressure,” said Wood head coach Andrea Daniels. “The girls were able to regroup and strengthen as the game went on. In the second half the girls were able to combo play and move the ball more fluidly.”
