SAN FRANCISCO — Left-hander Alex Wood is set to join the Giants’ rotation and make his regular season debut with the club Sunday against the Miami Marlins.
Wood, who signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Giants this offseason, opened the season on the 10-day injured list after undergoing an ablation for nerves in his back during spring training. Sacramento River Cats broadcaster Johnny Doskow tweeted that Wood threw four innings of two-run ball on Tuesday in an exhibition against Oakland A’s alternate site players.
According to Doskow, Wood threw 74 pitches including 53 for strikes and recorded first-pitch strikes against 15 of the 19 hitters he faced.
With Wood facing the Marlins on Sunday, Giants manager Gabe Kapler said righty Logan Webb will move to the bullpen for the foreseeable future and aid a pitching staff that’s been down to two right-handed relievers since Reyes Moronta was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right flexor strain on Sunday.
“We think that Webb can come out of the pen and really bridge from a starter all the way through to the back of the bullpen or potentially even finish games at times,” Kapler said. “We felt like he was the right weapon of the group to come out of the pen.”
Wood will be the first left-hander to start a game for the Giants this season and will follow righties Anthony DeSclafani and Aaron Sanchez, who will pitch the first two games of the team’s weekend series in Miami.
“Wood is very excited and Webb was an absolute pro about it,” Kapler said.
The Giants will have to clear space on their 26-man roster to reinstate Wood from the injured list and the likeliest candidate for a demotion may be an outfielder who is joining the team on Wednesday.
Prior to their series finale against the Reds, the Giants recalled Steven Duggar from the Sacramento alternate site to take the place of LaMonte Wade Jr., who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain. Wade recorded two hits and a walk in a start on Sunday, but felt oblique pain on Monday and again during a start on Tuesday night against Cincinnati.
Kapler said Wade will miss about two weeks with the injury, but by recalling Duggar, the Giants will continue to have 14 position players and 12 pitchers on their roster. Kapler relayed positive reviews for Duggar’s work at the alternate site from Sacramento manager Dave Brundage prior to Tuesday’s game and the outfielder continued his impressive work with a four-hit day against A’s alternate site pitchers.
Duggar isn’t in Wednesday’s starting lineup against Reds right-hander Tyler Mahle, but he’s expected to be available off the bench.
