LOS ANGELES – Case goods resource Martin Svensson Home has announced an exclusive licensing arrangement with the inventor of a new Space Saver Table that will broaden the company’s assortment in occasional furniture.

The company, which also recently announced a new home office line, signed the agreement with Reymond Janssen to market his innovative space saving coffee table.

Janssen, an engineer based in the Vancouver area, developed the table as a solution to the space limitations in the apartment where he was living with his daughter. He engineered it to include built-in seating and a lift-top work surface that allows it to serve not only as a coffee table, but also as a desk, a dining table or a drafting table.

“Is it a coffee table? Is it a computer desk? Is it a compact dining set? Yes, it’s all of those things and more,” said John Sandberg, president Martin Svensson Home. “We are very excited to be the first to market this exciting new concept for small spaces living.”

Sandberg noted that the table is engineered with a lift-top mechanism that allows the entire top to extend up and away, revealing a bench seat on one side. This seat allows it to be used as a “computer desk, a homework study space for two kids or dining space for two or even four when extended toward a sofa,” Sandberg noted. “It is ideal for small apartments or homes.”

Lift-top coffee tables are not new in the market. However, their design typically requires them to be positioned next to a sofa or loveseat, which can be cumbersome when trying to lean over the table surface to work or eat. The built-in seating of Janssen’s table eliminates this problem, allowing it to serve multi-functions, particularly in living room settings.

Made with solid New Zealand radiata pine and available in a dark coffee finish, the coffee table has a 50-inch by 28-inch top and is targeted to retail from $499 to $599. It is being shown with a companion end table and console table that retail from $149 to $249 and from $349 to $399, respectively. A TV console in a matching finish is also available. These are all expected to ship in the fall.

“The living room has become a hub as a shared space for eating, relaxing, working from home, watching TV, you name it,” said Jeff Sandberg, vice president and product line director for occasional tables. “The end and console tables feature convenient shelf space for a wireless printer and to help de-clutter and organize today’s smaller homes and apartments.”

Martin Svensson Home will showcase this patent pending design as part of its Innovations occasional table collection at the April 25-27 Premarket in High Point. The company shows in space H-721 of the International Home Furnishings Center.
