OMAHA, Neb. – In the next step of a long-term succession plan Irv Blumkin, CEO of Nebraska Furniture Mart (NFM) is transitioning to a new role as chairman of the company founded by his grandmother Rose Blumkin in 1937.

Tony Boldt, NFM’s president and chief operating officer, will be taking the role of CEO and president. Ron Blumkin who transitioned to the role of chairman when Boldt was named president and COO, will now serve as vice chairman.

“When Tony was named NFM’s president in 2016, part of our long-term succession plan was for Tony to take over the role of CEO when the time was right,” Irv Blumkin said in letter to NFM vendors obtained by Furniture Today. “Tony has been very successful as our president, and we have a strong leadership team in place. Because of this, the timing is now right for Tony to transition to the CEO role.”

Boldt joined Nebraka Furniture Mart in 2002 as a warehouse manager and rose through the company ranks, becoming store manager of the Des Moines store, appliances and electronics general sales manager in Omaha, store director of the Kansas City store, and most recently president and COO.

“As NFM’s president, Tony has been critical to our success over the past several years, including implementing state-of-the-art technology, achieving record sales growth, and positioning our company for ongoing growth,” Irv Blumkin said. “There’s no doubt in my mind that the business will be in incredibly capable hands.”

In his new role as chairman, Blumkin will be responsible for enterprise-level strategy and visioning, along with Boldt and will also focus on mentoring at the executive level. “I’ll continue to work on special projects. Additionally, I’ll stay connected with key suppliers as the relationships transfer to Tony and Nora Gomez, chief merchandising officer.”

Blumkin will also continue to regularly drive by the store in his native Omaha to make sure the lights are on and everything remains safe as has been his habit for many years. “You can rest assured I will keep my eyes on the lights,” Blumkin told Furniture Today. “Retail is detail.”
