The winner of the Wood Memorial 2021 will receive 100 Kentucky Derby qualifying points, guaranteeing himself a berth in the field in the first jewel of the Triple Crown. Kinchen is completely fading Risk Taking, even though he is the 5-2 favorite. A son of Medaglia d'Oro, Risk Taking has two wins in four career starts. He is coming off a win in the Withers Stakes at Aqueduct on Feb. 6.
But Risk Taking has never run particularly fast. His career best Beyer Speed Figure is 89; three horses -- Brooklyn Strong, Crowded Trade and Weyburn -- have run faster. Kinchen will not have Risk Taking in any of his 2021 Wood Memorial bets.
However Kinchen is high on Prevalence, who is getting 3-1 odds. A son of Medaglia d'Oro just like Risk Taking, Prevalence is undefeated in two starts. He has won his two races by a combined 11½ lengths.
On Sunday he put in a sizzling workout in preparation for the Wood Memorial 2021, covering four furlongs in 47⅗ seconds. The workout was the best of 30 at the distance, suggesting he is primed to run well on Saturday. Kinchen will have Prevalence on all of his tickets.
