Topline
A social club for Atlanta lawyers expelled Lin Wood on Wednesday, and he says Arizona’s state bar association is investigating his conduct, the latest backlash to hit Wood after his zealous backing of false voter fraud claims over the 2020 election veered into wild conspiracy theories.
Key Facts
Lawyers Club of Atlanta President Adam Hames confirmed Wood’s expulsion from his group to Forbes, though he declined to offer any further comment.
In a letter Wood posted to the social media platform Telegram, the Lawyers Club said it’s kicking him out because he “repeatedly posted incendiary, seditious, and patently false messages on social media,” including implying Supreme Court Justice John Roberts belongs to a sex trafficking ring and calling for former Vice President Mike Pence to face “firing squads.”
On Telegram, Wood vowed to appeal the Lawyers Club’s decision, claiming he doesn’t care about the “largely irrelevant” organization but wants to defend his reputation.
Wood also posted a letter from the State Bar of Arizona, notifying him about an investigation into charges he acted unethically by planning to help with a voter fraud suit last year (Wood claimed on Telegram he was not involved in that case) — a State Bar spokesperson confirmed the investigation to Forbes.
Arizona is the second state where Wood could face sanctions: Last month, the bar in his home state of Georgia said it is considering revoking his law licence due to “mental illness.”
Crucial Quote
“Under any reasonable measurement of conduct unbecoming, Mr. Wood has crossed that line by a wide margin,” the Lawyers Club wrote. “Mr. Wood’s continued membership in the Club would bring discredit to the Club and its members.”
Chief Critic
“I will not go quietly in the night. I have done nothing wrong,” Wood wrote on Telegram, in response to the Lawyers Club.
Key Background
A defamation attorney, Wood initially became well-known for representing clients like Richard Jewell, who was falsely accused of planting a bomb at the 1996 Olympics. After last year’s election, he recast himself as a vocal supporter of Trump’s voter fraud myths, filing error-laden lawsuits and promoting false theories about the election on social media.
Tangent
Several other attorneys have faced rebuke after backing former President Donald Trump’s election-reversing gambit. Michigan’s Attorney General is pushing for Sidney Powell to be disbarred after she filed longshot lawsuits alleging widespread voter fraud in Michigan and other states. Plus, Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani has earned multiple professional conduct complaints from other lawyers, and he faces possible expulsion from the New York State Bar Association, a voluntary organization that can’t prevent him from practicing law.
