The hotel is donating some of its older furniture to theExchange, so that it can provide free furniture to those who need it most
LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – When we buy new furniture, too often our old furniture ends up in a dumpster, and ultimately a landfill.
But a local hotel is making sure its furniture is getting used for the greater good.
There’s an old saying that goes “sharing is caring.”
“It’s all like teamwork,” Econo Lodge manager Mona Patel said.
The Econo Lodge has been a sheltering place for the homeless since the fall to keep them safe from COVID-19.
“All the guests, they’re really supportive and cooperative,” Patel said.
The guests hope to ultimately find permanent housing.
When it comes to filling their home, they can head to the bank. theExchange, La Crosse’s furniture bank, is eager to pay out.
“It started in the atmosphere of ending homelessness in La Crosse,” theExchange program coordinator Sheila Riley said.
Riley says the 5-year-old non-profit started in a garage.
“We didn’t start anticipating we would turn into a community resource that’s here to stay,” Riley said.
Patel says some of the rooms need to be refurbished.
“We want to get new furniture,” Patel said.
And theExchange needs some kitchen tables and dressers.
“We never have enough of those,” Riley said.
So the furniture bank and the hotel are partnering up.
“We want to give this furniture to theExchange program,” Patel said.
“And so, we are thrilled to be bringing those in today,” Riley said.
Eight to nine volunteers are helping move up to 75 pieces of furniture to theExchange’s warehouse.
“It really helps restock our inventory,” Riley said. “And then we can kind of take a little breath and say, ‘OK, we know we’re good to go on kitchen tables and dressers for folks for a good while.”
Patel says the furniture is in good shape.
“It’s good for another 10 years I would say,” Patel said.
Keeping it out of the landfill, and into the homes of those who need it most.
“When you have abundance, you share,” Riley said.
Riley says she expects all the furniture brought in from the Econo Lodge will be gone in three weeks.
The furniture is provided to its clients free of charge.
