Far right attorney Lin Wood intends to run for chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party, the lawyer confirmed Sunday, even as he faces potential disbarment and other consequences for pushing baseless election fraud claims and attempting to overturn the presidential election result.

Wood announced his run to lead the South Carolina GOP Sunday night and later confirmed it to The Hill, writing on Telegram he had been approached by supporters in the state who “want to take back their Republican Party.”
The attorney, who was previously based in Georgia, has been living in South Carolina for “several months,” he told local Atlanta outlet WSB-TV in February, after purchasing property there in April.
Wood’s move to South Carolina has been a source of controversy: The Georgia Secretary of State’s office confirmed to Forbes it is investigating whether Wood voted illegally in Georgia in light of his recent move (Wood denies doing so, saying he only officially changed his residency in February).
The attorney will be trying to unseat the present chairman Drew McKissick, a political strategist and consultant who has led the party since 2017.
Wood, 68, gained notoriety after the presidential election for spreading baseless conspiracy theories about the election and figures including U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Roberts and former Vice President Mike Pence, which led to him being banned from Twitter and the Trump White House distancing themselves from him.
He also led several post-election lawsuits alleging voter fraud in battleground states and trying to overturn their election results—including with fellow far-right attorney Sidney Powell, who he now says he’s representing in the defamation lawsuit filed against her by Dominion Voting Systems.

“I want to help my new neighbors in South Carolina return the Republican Party back to The People,” Wood told The Hill in an email about his decision to run for the chairman position. “The People have ALL the power — not the elite cabal of the old guard leadership.”

Wood is now facing a range of consequences for his behavior post-election. The State Bar of Georgia is investigating Wood and has asked him to undergo a mental health evaluation—which he has refused to do and sued them in retaliation—which could potentially lead to him being disbarred in the state. He is being investigated by the State Bar in Arizona as well, the association has confirmed to Forbes. Wood has also been dropped from a court case in Delaware and by high-profile client Nicholas Sandmann from Covington Catholic High School, and MSNBC host Joy Reid has asked for him to be kicked off a defamation case against her. After being banned from Twitter in January, Wood noted on Telegram Friday the platform had limited his account after users reported some of his content.
