MARSHFIELD, Wis. (WSAW) - The Wood County Sheriff’s Department said they have found human remains in the township of Rock.
A news release states the remains have not been identified but it is believed they are connected to the search of Zachary Vasa. An ID card found at the scene belonged to Vasa. The 32-year-old was last seen June 13, 2020. On June 20, 2020 Marshfield Police said Vasa was last seen at a home in Marshfield. They requested anyone with information to contact them.
A two-day search was conducted in an area of Patton Drive and Fairhaven Avenue. The Wood County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Marshfield Police Department and the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation.
“This is still an ongoing investigation. There are still follow-up interviews that our investigators are going to be doing, but the focus today is recovering the skeletal remains,” Wood County Sheriff Shawn Becker said.
In July 2020, Jacob Immerfall, 34, was arrested and held on a charge of hiding a corpse. He has not been charged. Court records list his address as Patton Drive. Last summer, Wood County Sheriff Shawn Becker said cadaver dogs hit multiple times in the house and on the 40-acre property but at the time a body wasn’t found. At the time, Becker said Immerfall was not cooperating with investigators.
The family of Zachary Vasa has been in touch with Wood County officials through the investigation. The family says even though the remains have not been identified yet, they hope to bring Zachary back home for a funeral.
“Part of me feels happy and relieved and now he can come home to where he belongs. But the other part of me is hurting because he’s not coming home the way we wanted him to,” Mother of Vasa’s son Jessica Schmitt said.
