Topline

The Georgia Secretary of State’s office confirmed to Forbes it is probing whether pro-Trump attorney Lin Wood voted illegally in Georgia after Wood indicated to a reporter that he has resided outside of the state for several months.

Key Facts

Wood, who filed lawsuits on behalf of former President Trump pushing baseless claims of voter fraud, told WSB-TV reporter Justin Gray that he has been “domiciled in South Carolina for several months.”

Hours later, the Secretary of State’s office launched a probe into whether Lin voted as an out-of-state resident based on what he told Gray.

The investigation, first reported by Gray based on anonymous sources, is reportedly based on a section of Georgia code that says if a person “removes to another state with the intention of making it such person’s residence” they have “lost such person’s residence in this state.”

Wood told Gray that he has been a resident of the state since 1955 and only changed his residency yesterday, calling the investigation “pure harassment” and falsely claiming he has “revealed credible evidence of election fraud on the part of [Georgia Secretary of State] Brad Raffensperger.”

Crucial Quote

Wood told Gray he moved to South Carolina for “purely personal” reasons unrelated to Georgia State Bar proceedings that could result in him losing his license for “mental illness” or “cognitive impairment.” Gray reported that Wood intends to join the South Carolina Bar but does not plan to surrender his Georgia Bar license.

Key Background

Wood was one of the most vocal and high-profile legal champions of Trump’s efforts to overturn his election loss through false claims of “rigging” and widespread voter fraud. At one point, the Trump campaign even distanced itself from Wood after he urged voters to sit out the Georgia Senate runoffs to “punish” Georgia’s now-former GOP senators for not doing enough to support Trump.

What To Watch For

Wood has taken considerable reputational damage for his efforts to overturn the election. In addition to being banned from Twitter, he was kicked off a defamation case brought by former Trump adviser Carter Page for his “frivolous” election lawsuits.
