The parcel will become part of a new facility in rural Snohomish County supporting the creation of new wood products
The Washington State Department of Natural Resources will transfer 3.74 acres of land to the Town of Darrington for its future Wood Innovation Center development after the Board of Natural Resources approved the transaction during its meeting Tuesday.
The $162,000 transaction will transfer the triangular parcel next to the airport into town ownership as part of a campus that will house and attract new wood fiber-based innovation and manufacturing companies. Expected to break ground later this year, the Wood Innovation Center will include companies building or manufacturing mass timber, cross-laminated timber (CLT), and modular housing.
“The Darrington Wood Innovation Center represents the future of forest products in Washington state, and I’m excited that the Department of Natural Resources can play a part in bringing this dynamic project to the Stillaguamish Valley,” said Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz, the elected official who oversees DNR. “This investment creates new jobs in a timber town while also charting a new path with sustainable products like cross-laminated timber.”
“This land acquisition is the final piece of an economic development strategy to bring mass timber, high-quality modular construction, and education resources to our rural community,” said Darrington Mayor Dan Rankin. “We are grateful to DNR for working diligently through this transaction to further Darrington’s dream of economic resilience and job diversity.”
The revenue from the transaction will be used to purchase replacement property elsewhere in the state to support facilities construction for Washington State University.
The Board of Natural Resources meeting was held remotely as part of DNR’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
